This thread starts of as a typical DU jab at Catholics, and then it goes very, very wrong...
LOL---Katie Holmes moves from one cult to another.
Katie Holmes Returns To Catholic Church
(http://i.huffpost.com/gen/678816/thumbs/r-KATIE-HOLMES-large570.jpg)
Five years after revealing that she had started to study Scientology, Katie Holmes has officially returned to the Catholic faith, registering as a parishioner at the Church of St. Francis Xavier in New York City.
“Everyone is thrilled to have Katie join us,†a member of the church's choir told me. “She has not yet attended a service, but when she does she will be welcomed with open arms.â€

The wrong starts with a potential mole..
2. She could do a lot worse.

I thought she was going to become a Tibetan Buddhist. Buddhism is quite popular among celebrities. Richard Gere, Sharon Stone, and Steven Segal, just to name a few.
Either that, or Kabbala (e.g. Madonna and Demi Moore).
..and then evolves into a history lesson on the violence of Buddhists.
63. ...really?
Well, there was the Muarya Empire which, in an effort to spread Buddhism across the Indian subcontinent, waged wars of conquest through India. Buddhism was essentially a fundamentalist protetant sect of Hinduism at the time, and behaved appropriately... which is perhaps a major reason why Buddhism has such a non-presence in hte land where it was founded.
Buddhists who moved into Southeast Asia persecuted and exterminated local Hindu traditions. In Tibet, they did the same to the Bon shamans.
Buddhism tried to kick Taoist ass in China, and thus we get the non-mystical religions of confucianism and legalism; peopel were like "those guys are assholes, let's go to philosophy"
Wars between Buddhist and Shinto sects were frequent in Japan, until the coming of Christianity, when they both agreed to tag-team the Jesuits. Zen Buddhism was developed into a sort of berserker religion by the Samurai; empty the mind of anything other than killing for one's lord.
Lamaic rule in Tibet was exactly what you'd expect of theocratic rule by people professing removal from material concerns in a medival setting. Think of the nobles from "Braveheart" but with fewer horses and more chanting. The Chinese actually did do Tibet a favor. Not a big favor, but a favor.
For the most part, the Mongols were Buddhists of the Tibetan tradition when they gave the world a serious case of being kicked to the face.
Zen Buddhism as the "kill whatever my lord says" made a reappearance during the japanese invasion of Mainland Asia in the 20th century.
Let's not go pretending that Buddhism a nothing but a bunch of happy hummers with a placid history of eternal meditation or whatever.
And the response ? Typical..
71. Hmm, when's the last time a Buddhist set up a concentration camp that used

Zyklon-B? Pius XII knew it was happening (based on reports from Polish emmisaries to the Vatican) and said ZILCH about it, no doubt b/c the Vatican had made its Concordat with the Devil to safeguard German Catholics' interests.
So spare me the history lessons. Or produce evidence of a Buddhist Auschwitz. Othewise, STFU.
You guessed it.. Hitler. And you know what they say about those who invoke Godwin's law...
79. Unit 731
Same time period, even.
Next question please.
..they lose. So, where to next ?
39. Given tht Buddhism is almost more a philosophy than an actual religion because no god is worshipped,
I am puzzled that you consider it "worse" than Scientology.
Hmmm. I smell a fundie christianist.
..thou shalt not Diss teh Buddah, else I shall cast asparagus at thee, fundie !!!1!!
Lots more Fun(die) goodness in the link above !

Zyklon-B?
They killed them where they found them and left them laying. So, Hitler was a neat freak.

Oh yes, we're a horrible Cult who provides food banks for those in the Obamaeconomy who need it, we provide heating and electric bill assistance to those in need, we feed the hungry in Central and South America and Africa. What do Atheists do for those in need? What does Islam do for those in need who are non-Muslim?

Far too many Catholics vote Democrat. Hopefully a few more get to see what Democrats really think of them beyond being a target voting group.

Not this 1! most practicing Catholics IMO are overwhelmingly Conservative, it's the CEO Catholics (Christmas Easter Only) who tend to vote leftist.

I know - sadly where I am, most of the Catholics are exactly that variety, which is why we have been merging churches left and right, because they are only the holiday variety anymore.
The church The missus and I got married in just got merged out of existence last month. The church was a classic Victorian style structure. The former attendees have been moved into a nearby church that was built in the '80s and isn't at all representative of what a Catholic church should be. Its really quite sad.
Thankfully, when they merged our church, it was our building that was maintained. It just has a really stupid name now. - Instead of keeping one name, or selecting a whole new name, they took elements from the two merged churches and combined them into "Holy Name of The Sacred Heart of Jesus".. Ugh.

I believe the correct answer to both is bitch about Christians and Jews. Of course, some in Islam also do a lot of killing of the non-Muslims, but they are not biased as they kill both the non-Muslims in need AND the non-Muslin who are not in need.

Hey! That's my line!

I have to say that the Masses I go to get decent crowds, but I've heard of Parishes merging for things like CCD.

Miskie, my church was built in 1986. People who come there, out of the parish, can't find the front door. The acoustics of the church are . . . 'lacking,' to put it mildly (and our choirs still sound good!). There's a church architect working on a renovation plan right now. I have no idea how it's going to end up. The thing is, the parish is the largest in the diocese, and it's still growing.
Whatever God puts in our lives, I suppose . . . it's all in His Plan.

The same thing is true with this new church (cant find the door) The church is more or less round, and is almost entirely beige, save for a few stained glass windows salvaged from the church that originally stood on that property until it was destroyed by fire.
Its just such a loss - but I am a fan of old architecture - Its probably why I own one of the last 100 or so octagonal* houses in the USA.
(*Its classed as an octagon, even though it is actually seven sided)

In Albany, behind the NYS Court of Appeals building, sits St. Mary's. A long, long time ago, just after Bishop Hubbard was elevated to bishop and started to 'renovate' older churches by making them more 'modern,' the pastor at that time looked at all of the gold leaf and all of the architecture (the church was built in the 1790s, IIRC) and said, "I've got to preserve this. But how?" Because it was the oldest church building in Albany, he decided to put it on the National Registry of Historical Places, and it's now a Federal crime to change the building--inside or out. Plus, there's Federal money available to maintain it--because of its' historical significance. The gold leaf gets a thorough cleaning and touch-up every few years.

Nicely done :D
Now as long as the liberals don't try to have it removed from status by further bastardizing 'Separation of Church & State' it should remain.

My Parish went backwards when it was renovated, it was way too modern, when they renovated they went old, it's absolutely gorgeous.

Catholicism is a cult? That is new. Oh wait, they are people who side with Islamic terrorists. So of course they won't know what a cult is.

The Albany Democrat machine would absolutely be up in arms. It would be fun to watch.

Not to mention invented Universities, formed the basis for English common law (now spread across the world), I suspect that we could both go on all day.

I read the whole thread. Tolerant bunch.
One of the DUmmies claimed the Catholic Church didn't set the framework for their own personal law.

I live in a predominantly Southern Baptist city....several of the "mega" churches have over 10,000 members!!! There are a couple of non-deniminational mega churches on this side of town too. My daughter and her family go to one. I went once to hers. First 30 minutes was a gospel rock concert, and the next 30 minutes was the preacher preaching. He had on jeans and a wrinkled plaid shirt. He's a recovering addict.
I've been told I'm a heathen, or not a real Christian, because Catholics drink wine in church (OMG the sin of it!!!!) and we go to confession. Not sure why going to confession makes me an evil person, but that's what I was told...by a woman on her 3rd margarita. She was an enlightened Presbyterian. :whistling:

Methodist are the only religious bunch that don't waste their money on the devils evil brews...they let Baptist buy them drinks.

I look at mega-churches and their preachers as people who in it for the money and not the gospel. Prime example; Joel Osteen. My aunt loves him. I listened to him a couple of times. He speaks for maybe ten minutes and says nothing about God at all. All he does is give a pep talk with an account of something in his life.

Just thought of the irony of the cult of Marx calling the Catholic church a cult.

In no way can the Catholic church be considered a cult. In a cult, the followers do what the leader tells them to do. No one does what the Pope tells them to do, outside of the Vatican. There are a lot of cafeteria Catholics out there.
