French government targets rich with tax rises
Source: The Guardian
France's new Socialist government has announced tax rises worth €7.2bn (£5.78bn), mainly targeting the wealthiest households and biggest corporations, as the country struggles to plug a gaping hole in its budget.
The tax increases come as a deeply indebted France battles to stick to its deficit-reduction targets and keep Brussels and the markets at bay. A grim economic assessment by state auditors this week warned of a €40bn hole in state coffers over the next two years and the government has lowered its growth predictions.
The raid on the wealthy is in line with François Hollande's election promise: "If there are sacrifices to be made –and there will be –then it will be for the wealthiest to make them."
More than half the measures target households, mainly the country's richest, and just under half target big business. They include lowering France's wealth tax threshold, which had been raised by Nicolas Sarkozy. France's wealth tax is unique in the EU and Hollande will now add a one-off higher levy on those with net wealth of more than €1.3m.

8. How "patriotic" of them
and I say to them the same that I would say to Americans that threaten the same...Don't let the door hit you where the good Lord split you!
**** people who have benefited greatly from the security and opportunity of a great country, and then bail when the going gets tough, or they are asked to "step-up".
This needs to be turned on it's ****ing head. How about instead of the "wealthy" threatening to take their marbles and go home. How about the next time the Repukes and Tea-baggers decide that we need to balance the budget on the backs of the Middle Class and poor, we say "**** you, we're leaving your shitty ass country"?
Let Mitt and his billionaire buddies pick up the ****ing garbage, teach their spoiled kids, protect their property and business from marauders, protect their economic interests by fighting and dying in some far off land, build the roads and put out the ****ing wildfires.
**** people like this. If they hate their country that much, and if our wealthy are really that anti-American, WE should help them pack their ****ing bags!
Happy ****ing Independence Day!

9. I say take it a bit further
**** the wealthy. Their bill is ****ing past due! They've benefited greatly from the opportunity of a great country. FREEZE EVERY ****ING ASSET they've earned doing business in the country and show them to the border!
Since they "earned" it all on their own, without any help from the "public" sector, I'm sure they'll be able to do just fine starting over.
After all, they didn't need the "gubmint". The "gubmint" didn't train and educate their workers, didn't provide state of the art infrastructure to move their products, didn't provide security and protection for their assets, didn't provide a stable government they could do business in.
Hell, they claim they are the "job creators". Let them go someplace else and start over. I'm sure they'll be able to show us that THEY DID IT ALL ON THEIR OWN
It must suck to have so much jealousy that other people have done something with their lives and earned a lot of money.

There isn't a single DUmp douchebag who would be willing to pay 75% in taxes. They are doing nothing but talking out their ass.

That idiot's rant up there was prompted by someone pointing out that the rich were leaving France in droves, with other countries lined up to welcome them with open arms. Switzerland, for example, where the French would feel perfectly at-home. He posts several sources.

And what will the 47% on gov't assistance give us for the security, opportunity and welfare we've given them?

Ya know, I see the 47% figure used by lots of people and I am sure there is probably some justification for its use; but, I do not believe that everyone included in the make up of that figure are on 'assistance and or welfare'. As a retired federal employee I take umbrage at the concept that the over thirty plus years I spent earning a pension along with the ten years under Social Security working and saving (which I will never see a penny from btw) somehow now constitute assistance or welfare. I see the constant use of this figure as spurious.
While your results may vary, I see the overuse of this figure as trivializing a valid argument over that segment of the population which are in fact 'moochers'.
Liberals love to use it to 'prove' all manner of socialist fantasies such as "Gee dad, you receive Social Security" or "You drive on public roads". I don't buy that either.

The number needs to be adjusted to not include pensions , Social Security , and Medicare. I'd like to see just Medicaid and welfare of the various sorts included.

Technically, the 47% is correct in the sense that those people do not send in an income tax, regardless of how they are receiving the money, either honorably through retirement or disability, or through welfare means. I do see your point, though in that we can't put everyone in the 47% in the same DUmpmonkey blanket. I certainly bregrudge NONE of the heroes at Walter Reed, for instance, whom are technically off the active duty payroll but receiving richly deserved health care at our expense. They may be part of the 47%, but they are part of the REAL top 1%: Heroes in American society.

I  the comments section at articles:
I hope it works out. A poke in the eye for Osborne's cretinous ways.
Au contraire, the poke in the eye will come in the other direction.
If Hollande thinks someone earning that much can't structure their affairs to make sure their money doesn't touch French soil, probably by routing it via London or Switzerland, then he's got another think coming.
At that kind of tax rate, why would anyone bother earning more in France anyway?
Not of course that I don't want more equality, but just that I don't think this is going to achieve it.
If I were Hollande and the rich structured their affairs to ensure that their money didn't touch French soil, I'd stop their company from doing business in France. Hollande should say "Here's the deal - if you want to do business in this country, you should pay your taxes". And if they stay greedy, they can find another marketplace.
"I'd stop their company from doing business in France."
And they'll say, bye bye, nice knowing you. Oh and don't start asking about that factory I was thinking of opening, cos it ain't going to happen now.
Well, that's their choice. They'll also say goodbye to the profits they used to earn in the country.
Someone less greedy will come and build a factory. The notion that you have to be greedy to be a successful businessman is nonsense.

to your statement above.
Not paying taxes is one thing, receiving government assistance is another, and, drawing a military or civil service pension yet another. The problem is lumping all the numbers together to form something they are not individually.
As a civilian employee I worked with many hard working outstanding people and an equal number of mind numbed slugs who but for their union steward would have been out on their ear. Generalizing with aggregate numbers is setting oneself up for failure, like saying 'all the cows are laying down' only to notice one standing up.
I might add that I found similar people in both the Army and Navy when I served and in private industries which I worked. Private industry slugs were often relatives or friends of the owner although they were easier to get rid of.

Nearly Half of U.S. Lives in Household Receiving Government Benefit.
By Sara Murray
Families were more dependent on government programs than ever last year.
Nearly half, 48.5%, of the population lived in a household that received some type of government benefit in the first quarter of 2010, according to Census data. Those numbers have risen since the middle of the recession when 44.4% lived households receiving benefits in the third quarter of 2008.

Yes, 47% of Households Owe No Taxes. Look Closer.
By DAVID LEONHARDT
Published: April 13, 2010
Forty-seven percent.
That’s the portion of American households that owe no income tax for 2009. The number is up from 38 percent in 2007, and it has become a popular talking point on cable television and talk radio. With Tax Day coming on Thursday, 47 percent has become shorthand for the notion that the wealthy face a much higher tax burden than they once did while growing numbers of Americans are effectively on the dole.
