Title: is cloud seeding real?
Post by: Lauri on May 19, 2008, 10:00:26 PM
in a thread about 'did our govt cause the massive earthquake in china??' .. possibly a DU thread I believe..

i got offline and was talking about it with my husband and he said, 'a very well known philanthropist said in an article that he gave a lot of money to third world countries where they desperately need rain for their crops - and it isnt viable so far. if we could make it rain, we'd do it. but the technology isnt there yet.'

does anyone know anything more about this? i was actually under the impression that it was real, but that's only based on Coast to Coast shows that have weirdos proclaiming all sorts of nonsense..

Not sure....but I remember hearing a lot about it in  the mid 70's here during a drought.

If I remember correctly Yes it is real. They used to do it to make it rain when conditions were right. Basically they just supplied a trigger when conditions were right but just needed something to set off the storms. For some reason I'm thinking iodine or some compound containing it.

They experimented with seeding hurricane storms to rain them out before they got to bad. It caused an uproar in the world community, again if I'm remembering correctly it was led by Cuba because Fidel was scared we'd steer hurricanes onto his ass. They banned weather experiments by treaty because of the uproar.

Again this is all from a file deep in my head somewhere and I could be wrong on some details. :mental:

During the drought in the 1950s, they discussed seeding the clouds.

I was watching a program on the history channel about new orleans.  I wonder if al-Gore realizes that Lake Ponch-a-train was formed 5000 years ago when the polar ice caps melted.

How many know this angle of al-Gore's hypocracy regarding fossil fuels?  Remember back when he was VP and the release of oil from the strategic petroleum reserve?  al-Gore owned stock in the oil company which was awarded the contract to refine that oil.  To the best of my knowledge, al-Gore still owns that stock.

And to think democrats whine and snivel about George Bush and big oil!

ok, that sounds familiar as well... seeding clouds to rain them out ..

i am afraid to look that particular subject up on the internet... Lord knows what I would be led to...  :-)

they ought to match up Gore and Bush's financial empires and see who has made the most off of this global warming scare-mongering.

one hint who wins.

Not sure....but I remember hearing a lot about it in  the mid 70's here during a drought.

If we can steer hurricanes and turn up the Earth's thermostat we shouldn't have any trouble at all making a little rain.

It's real, but the conditions have to be just right for it to work and the results are uneven (i.e. even with the right conditions, it may fizzle, not 'Uneven' in the sense of accidentally creating a 500-year flood).

Basically in order to form raindrops, it helps immensely if there is some airborne particulate matter on which the vapor can condense.  We've all seen long dry spells where there are massive piles of cumulus clouds that get darker all afternoon and are shot through with heat lightning, but nothing falls to the ground.  The idea of seeding is to push this 'Almost' situation past the tipping point and trigger real rain to break the drought.  It is basically a primitive method to try to nudge something that is on the verge of happening over the edge.

Assuming you are talking about technologies other than the VRWC Hurritron Mk V, we do not have anything remotely close to a technology that can form the cyclonic wind systems off West Africa that become our hurricanes, nor to make them either bigger or smaller as they head our way.  It is basically pointless to seed the clouds of a hurricane offshore as they approach since the system will just pick up water to replace any load it drops before it gets to land anyway, and doing so would probably just add to the storm surge even if it did work.

i didnt want to start googling around for it as i know there is going to be a ton of bad information out there... i already listen to Coast to Coast far too much (:-)) and get a head full of stupid crap from that show..

although, im asleep when its on, i just know my brain is sucking up all that useless info for some time later.
