Andy Griffith, an icon of TV, has died ... this according to Andy's close friend, former UNC President Bill Friday.

Griffith, who became famous for "The Andy Griffith Show," passed away at his home in Manteo, North Carolina this morning.

Friday broke the news to WITN News in North Carolina.

In addition to starring in his show and the subsequent "Mayberry R.F.D.," Griffith was a Grammy award-winning southern gospel singer.  Of course, Griffith also starred in the long-running series, "Matlock" and often made guest appearances in other shows, including "Dawson's Creek."

There's a famous statue of Andy and Opie -- played by Ron Howard -- in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Griffith was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by George W. Bush in 2005.

Only 86?  He looked older than Methuselah.

RIP, Sheriff Taylor.

Andy Griffith was a good actor and his role as Sheriff Andy Taylor will always be classic.  He went a little moonbat politically towards the end of his life, but otherwise he seemed to live descently and outside all the Hollywood glitz.

RIP, Andy Griffith.

I don't ever see the Andy Griffith show on anymore; but Matlock is on WGN weekday mornings. I like both of those shows.

Andy Griffith sings (not whistles) the theme song to his show:

Lyrics:

Well, now, take down your fishin' pole and meet me at the fishin' hole,
We may not get a bite all day, but don't you rush away.

What a great place to rest your bones and mighty fine for skippin' stones,
You'll feel fresh as a lemonade, a-settin' in the shade.

Whether it's hot, whether it's cool, oh what a spot for whistlin' like a fool.

What a fine day to take a stroll and wander by the fishin' hole,
I can't think of a better way to pass the time o' day.

We'll have no need to call the roll when we get to the fishin' hole,
There'll be you, me, and Old Dog Trey, to doodle time away.

If we don't hook a perch or bass, we'll cool our toes in dewy grass,
Or else pull up a weed to chaw, and maybe set and jaw.

Hangin' around, takin' our ease, watchin' that hound a-scratchin' at his fleas.

Come on, take down your fishin' pole and meet me at the fishin' hole,
I can't think of a better way to pass the time o' day.

He's already been buried, which is a good thing, considering that Margie Phelps was all over Twitter threatening to picket the funeral.

He just died yesterday. They aren't going to bury him the same day he dies. And lets those WBC inbreeds picket his funeral. The great people of North Carolina will give them the kind of welcome they deserve.

Yes they did. They held his funeral within hours of his death.

eh? So he died at 7:00 Am, then went straight to the funeral home, and then had the funeral, and then got buried all by noon? No viewing, and no people to pay their last respects to him? This is the first I heard of that.

Edit:

The article said that a prompt intimate service and internment has been planned for some time. So he must have been sick for a while. Or they knew he was going to die soon.

Whoa! North Carolina doesn't require embalming before burial? If that is the case, they just put him in the casket and buried him. Wow. This is different.

Embalming is not required by most states. If there's no viewing, or if the family objects to it, or if the dead person specified so, there is no embalming.

Embalming is just a funeral home's profit.

I don't know if it mattered, but he was also buried on the family farm, not in a public cemetery.

Yes, I loved his farm. That was a perfect place to bury him. Now he can be there forever.

No Time For Sergeants--one of the funniest movies ever.

The scene where he had all the commodes saluting was hysterical.

Interesting thing about the development of the Andy Griffith Show - the producers originally had envisioned Andy as being a goofball in the same manner he portrayed his character in No Time for Sergeants.

That apparently didn't work as well as they thought, so then they rewrote the character such that he's the mature, affable, but watchful sort that he became. As we all know, the goofball schtick was all Don Knotts.

I want to give a little love to Salvage 1. I loved the idea of a man building a rocket out of junk, in your back yard, and going to the moon. Loved that show for the short time it was on.
