I've been playing baseball with a local team for the past few months but today I've officially been kicked of the team! For being too religious, and I am being serious! All I did was ask of the team was to hold a quick prayer session before every game and after every game and I had "The Bible is the cradle wherein Christ is laid" carved into my bat. Most of the players never took part in prayers anyway, but today they told me "Samuel, we understand your a religious guy but we've had enough. We come to play baseball not to pray.". I was pretty angered and left straight away, but how the F can you be too religious for baseball? I knew San Fran was a liberal city, but come on... Too religious for baseball, how is that possible?
-
Sorry General, I'm with the team on this one. You can pray as much as you want & wherever you want. And you can carve whatever you want on your bat. But, if your teammates don't want to participate in the prayers or make them part of the team routine, so be it. I'm a practicing Hedonist but, I don't ask my bowling team to rut with me before games.
-
But the thing is, I never forced anyone to join in, I just did it and asked if anyone wanted to join me. Plus ironically it's a my church team (but the majority of players are atheists :( )!

Anything wrong with you saying your OWN prayer without involving anyone else?
I would think your teammates wouldn't have a problem with you praying on your own, but the hammer generally comes down when you attempt to drag others along with you.
Not everybody wants to play prayer.
-
All I said in the dug outs before going out was "guys I'm gonna have a prayer if you wanna join your welcome to do so.". But it's a church team, should the team have a joint prayer session anyway?

Dunno. Does your church have a policy that states that every activity begin with prayer?
-
In fact I'll take it back, it isn't a church team any more. It use to be a church team until the majority of the players turned out to be atheists. But I've got over it already, I am gonna sign up for a team in the San Fran Christian Soccer league. Where they surly hold prayer session before matches.

Good thinking. :cheersmate:

Cheers :cheersmate:.
Staying on the subject of religion I'm guessing most of the people here are Christians? I was raised in a Jewish household until at 10 my parents decided to become Presbyterians, I've got no idea why. But I've been Christian ever since.

Non-committed here. Raised half-Southern Baptist/Half Catholic.

I am a practicing, unapologetic Christian. Elder in my Presbyterian church, occasional leader in prayer, and a terror to hedonists everywhere.

Hon, you are just a terror in general, I wouldn't blame the Presbyterians for it. :-)
BS for close to parity, I like things even.

You ought to look into Hedonism. Not that I'm one to proselytize.
-
At one point my parents were planning on becoming Mormons, but changed their after we spent a few weeks in Scotland. Where we stayed in a hotel with a Presbyterian bible.

I think it had something to do with Ronald Reagan, they absolutely loved him and even named my stillborn little brother after him "Ronald Reagan Yahya". He was a Presbyterian, by the way guys. Did you guys know the name Yahya is the Semitic version of John?

No chance, everybody knows Presbyterians are OCD. Admit it, it's driving you nuts.

Question, what are you speaking to God about ???? Are you asking him to make the other team loose, or are you asking for a safe no injury game for both teams ?? Our Maker does not need a spoken prayer to know your heart, a quick glance at the sky, or a mental " Thank you Lord" , God knows and cannot grant everyones wishes.
Catholic kids I was raised about would make the sign of the cross before they swam or competed in sports, it was second nature to them and most times so ingrained in them they never gave it a thought. Us Pagans would ask what they were doing and they would look at us and ask, "Doing What "???
Prayer comes in many forms, be it standing or on your knees, saying Hail Marys or reading the Beads.
Naturally you expect a church group to pray but who is going to say the prayer for the group---YOU ? Where and when is prayer approved for others. Only God knows what is in the mind of man and if the other team is also praying, if You loose does that mean God favors the other team over Yours ???
Prayer is about as personal as one can get. I have seen people in public eating places bow their head and say Grace before eating a meal and some Doofus wait staff break in to ask them if everything is OK.
I say do your own thing with God before you expect others to do Your thing as they have their own personal relationship with the Lord. Don't infringe on others rights to speak when or where to the Lord.
BTW your twins are beautiful, God has granted you a treasure, Just tell God thank you and ask for nothing from him except in a life or death emergency, God has granted you much more then most of us.

My prayer before a match has always been the same no matter what sport I play. I get down on one knee and say "dear lord, i thank you for letting me and my team live another week to play another game. May you help me win this match and perform to the best of my ability today. Amen" and after the game win or lose the prayer is always the same. "dear lord, I thank you for allowing me to enjoy the game with my teammates without any problems. I may you guide me, my teammates and my opponents home safely tonight. Amen."
-
May you help me win this match
Not something that I would personally pay for.
I'd pray for the safety of the team and our opponents, but not for His help in winning a game.
-
@Rich_t, I only play to win sir. I leave the prayers for everyone's safety during my post match prayer.

I don't mind anyone playing to win. I'm that way myself. But praying to win is a horse of a different color in my book.
-
I was going to mention about joining a church team, but you already said it.
As for BS's. Since Eupher doesn't want anymore. I will gladly take any that you would give him in his place. Hey, that is what friends are for. We help out each other :-)
-
Without being able to observe your behavior in public there is no way to answer intelligently.
But, so far as I know, nobody has a right to belong to a specific baseball team. People are cut from teams for all sorts of reasons.
-
I've (edited for bullshit)
You are just trying too hard to be a good little consevative. I don't believe a word of your shit.

Something is wrong here, were you asked to leave or did you leave in a huff or call a Taxi. I believe you have told us just a part of the story, for some reason this sounds like a bouncy to me.
So now you are on to play Soccer, a good contact sport. BTW who is watching the twins, did you leave your wife home alone to carry the load and does SHE ever get away for time with her friends. ????
From what I hear there are hundreds of Gay Christian Soccor clubs in SF. No problem getting the teams to fall to their knees and yell " Thank You Jesus.

The thread reminded me of this scene from Major League.
"Are you tryin' to say Jesus Christ can't hit a curve ball?"

That's nice.
I generally pray that we're thankful and blessed to be able to participate. I pray that no one gets hurt, but if someone does may it be on the other team. And I pray that if someone gets hurt on the other team, may it be a liberal rather than a conservative.

My mom was non-denominational, but I mostly attended a Presbyterian church from age 10 through college, then I converted to Eastern Orthodoxy :)
-
I'm not a praying man, but I do pray for three things.
One of them is pie.
