Title: recreational vehicles.....
Post by: seahorse513 on June 18, 2012, 09:55:48 PM
One thing I want to do is RV around this great country of ours. So debating on whether to buy an RV.Just a small one, nothing elaborate.....
One thing I considered, was storing  or keeping at a campground,  as I went, rather than driving it home everytime....
What are your thoughts??

Are you talking about a local camp ground or leaving it at a camp ground along your travel route?

I don't know much about these things, but it seems like a popup might be the way to go. You pull it behind your car/truck/SUV and you unhook it as part of your setup.

Not too much security in those things, but they're relatively inexpensive - link says anywhere from $5-10K.

Renting a parking lot at a storage facility usually runs about $50 a month, less if you can find one out in the country.

I had a Scamp trailer at one time, and now own a pop-up. The pop up has more room, bigger beds, etc.. but having to raise the thing up to get in is a PITA. The Scamp (Compact 13 footer) was always accessible but had much less storage. It was nice not having to crank up the thing anytime I needed to get into it. I wish I still had it, but me being 6'3" and the main bed only a twin size, it was too cramped for my wife and I, so I had to sell it.

If you're "going it alone" one of the Scamp style trailers is perfect.

Look for used, they don't go for much.

Questions, how many people would be using this "RV" & how long of periods ie: weekend, weeks or months at a time. Are you thinking about self propelled or towed camper.  Finally, what kind of weather conditions are you anticipating.

Casita makes some neat little trailers that can be towed by smaller vehicles. My niece had one & loved it & there is a forum for owners.

Casita and Grasshopper are pretty much the same thing as Scamp, and may have better layouts. I like the construction of any, being a "clamshell" design makes them very water proof.
