Sacramento woman named Teacher of Year, loses job

Michelle Apperson just found out she was named "Teacher of the Year" for the Sacramento City Unified School District.

Despite that and the fact that she has taught at Sutterville Elementary School for the past nine years, she's still losing her job due to budget cuts.

She received her final notice in May.

"It hurts on a personal level because I really love what I do," said Apperson. "But professionally, politically, I get why it happens."

"I hate to see any teacher lose their job," parent Kim Ochoa said. "But when you have teachers who are also winning awards like Ms. Apperson, they shouldn't be cut."

Oh. OK, then.

New campfire.  We won't see the real reasons why a "Teacher of the Year" would be laid off.  It's the damn unions fault.  This teacher probably had less seniority in her department so she is let go while some crappy DUmmie type teacher keeps ruining children's lives.

See if they let the teachers excel in their careers with merit based raises/promotions then this teacher wouldn't be losing her job

 4. No, she's probably a union supporter
She didn't drink any Koolaid. She understands that the law mandates seniority over skill, and she can't fight it.
It's a sad state of affairs when we favor those who've put in more years (and may not give a crap anymore), and fire the young and energetic ones who could bring life to the classroom. The system has got to be changed, because it's the students who suffer.

I wonder how this mainer primitive has survived with this type of talk.  Normally anything outside of the sacred cow of teachers unions usually gets the boot.

Thank goodness for tenure. Otherwise some less capable teacher with more seniority would have lost their job.

Me too! I love it that they automatically assume the person's a conservative and because of that it's okay that teacher of the year lost her job. She still has to pay her union dues so she supports the union's political positions whether she wants to or not. Besides, her saying she understood it "politically" that doesn't mean she's conservative. She might be very supportive of governor moonbeam. There's a battle going on between him and the congress. He wants deeper cuts than they do. At some point you run out of other people's money, DUmmies. That's where California is. They want to give money to every special little group that puts their hand out. The people paying for everything can't afford it anymore, except the uber rich. Middle class is leaving in droves. They don't have a choice.

Tenure, HA-HA.

2 cases of Tenured professors at UNH in the last couple of years made the news.   Both Male.

One left his baby in his car while he bought himself some take out and consumed it out of the sight of the car,  gone a good 30 minutes.

Other is a doozie, he road his motorcycle to a shopping center and exposed himself to two females.  Jumped on his bike and speed off to be caught by the police perhaps 10 miles away.

University wanted him gone but with tenure the Teachers union said NO so he was paid some $80,000 a year to not teach but answer phones in the main office.  I believe he was offered 5 years salary to resign but I have no idea if took the money or is back teaching or still answering phones.

This crime took place in Sparkys town, he may remember more then I do,------- and we wonder why it cost so much to send a child to a State College.

13. Then seniority rules suck.

And I'm a union member. But sometimes seniority rules suck out loud.
