Spread of 'baby boxes' in Europe alarms United Nations

The United Nations is increasingly concerned at the spread in Europe of "baby boxes" where infants can be secretly abandoned by parents, warning that the practice "contravenes the right of the child to be known and cared for by his or her parents", the Guardian has learned.

The committee, a group of 18 international human rights experts based in Geneva, says that while "foundling wheels" and baby hatches had disappeared from Europe in the last century, almost 200 have been installed across the continent in the past decade in nations as diverse as Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Poland, Czech Republic and Latvia. Since 2000, more than 400 children have been abandoned in the hatches, with faith groups and right-wing politicians spearheading the revival in the controversial practice.

Maybe I didn't read something right but it's like our SafeHaven thing where people if they don't want their kids instead of doing harm to them can leave them no questions asked.  Am I confused about what is sick?

So the idea that someone can leave their child in a box and walk away doesn't bother you at all?  At least with those Safe Haven places, you're handing it over to a person and not dropping it off like a letter in a post office box.

Not really.  I have read that they have alarms on them and someone immediately gets the child.  They don't leave it in there like  some chicken under lights.

It isn't like the kid gets left in a dumpster and isn't found until garbage pickup day.  IIRC, safe have drops here give enough time for the person dropping off the child to leave anonymously.

That is what I understand as well.  They are anonymous, but somebody is there to pick the baby very, very quickly.

Much preferable, in my opinion, to parents killing their babies or leaving them in a dumpster

What is sick and sad is that we live in a society that values sex so highly that children can be legally slaughtered before birth, and dumped in a box after birth...because nothing can be allowed to interfere with the right to screw anything you want.

I love the idea of baby boxes and hatches.  I wasn't raised by my birth parents and I turned out perfect! :yahoo:

Some questions I have are, what gender are most of these babies, and what religious background might the parent(s) be?
