Didn't the break-in at Watergate happen in June 1972?
And then the elections were in November 1972?
I think Watergate happened before Nixon's landslide.
Perhaps the libelchick primitive means not "Watergate" but "knowledge about Watergate" instead?
But if so, some knowledge about the break-in came to light during the summer and autumn of 1972, none of which made Nixon look exactly clean.
The fact that even a then somewhat-stained Nixon won in an impressive landslide against McGovern speaks volumes.
