people are hurting. We had a student (1st chair trumpet) not go to the concert he was starring in

when the teacher ...who was quite upset with this kid...asked him why he didn't go, the kid a 6th grader started tearing up and said

"my mom didn't have any money for gas to get me back to school"

damn

BFD! The DUmmys should be applauding the mother for lowering her carbon footprint for that day.

Oh my.

When I got out the boat and rowed over to Skins's island to see this bonfire, it was as if I had landed ashore on an overcrowded golf course.

Balls bouncing, flying, shooting, all over the place.

It happens.

When I was in the 6th grade -- 2nd chair trumpet :( -- we had a guy that could sky like MF!  I don't think he ever went anywhere with it other than maybe studio work.  But then, he did lead in some HS and community orchestra stuff.  But, his parents always seemed to find the gas.

Why wasn't their a bus to cart him to this concert? He's in 6th grade. Probably had to cut those excess travel expenses to pay to keep no copays on greenbrier's insurance and to give her a raise she probably didn't deserve. I have no pity for teachers especially. Many want to bring sob stories like this while fighting for their own bottom line via their union--bottom lines that often hurt the wallet of the parents of the sob story child.

We always ask this question:

Does anyone have a sock puppet to burn that points out that gas prices didn't start skyrocketing until the democrats took congress and that the leftist restrictions of refineries and drilling in AMWAR are why poor Johnny couldn't play in the concert that day?

What I can remember from 6th grade band practice was mostly learning scales.
I was 1st chair (Trombone) but I wasn't Tommy Dorsey.  :-)

6th grade and still doing scales?  Recheck your memory banks. 6th grade you should have been able to sight read (to some degree).  It doesn't mean I didn't hate that show off asshole, but they crop up from time to time. ;)

Were it me, I'd be calling the school, other parents, the band teacher, my child's favorite teacher, even the pathetic greenbriar to see if they could give my kid a ride and return the favor the next time...sheesh!

Kids mom had to replenish her stash. Priorities, ya know.

Or needed the cash for some $4 per pack smokes instead spending it on a couple of gallons of gas to take her kid to his concert.  I don't doubt that people are hurting.  That has always been the case.  On occasion, I teach financial skills to groups of people through a local food bank.  Lots of people got themselves in financial messes via poor choices...lots of my students smoked, were overweight and had scores of tats but could not rub two dimes together.   Oftentimes innocent kids are the victims of those poor choices.

My thoughts ran parallel...Mom didn't try very hard, or maybe the gas was an excuse not to try.

Better yet, if Greenbriar is so concerned, she should offer rides the next time!
