"We Americans...with the shortest vacations in the developed world..." --Rick Steves
It was part of a larger quote about traveling efficiently in a pledge break for KQED San Francisco, but it's worth mentioning here that it was said.

6. My German friend and I were discussing this - he gets six weeks of paid vacation.
I get... zero days of paid vacation. But America is the greatest country in the world!! Or so I'm told.
What a bunch of whiners.

Your German friend has been working for the same company for quite some time.
You probably don't have a job. :loser:

Well DUmmie, run for president, endless vacations, golf, $100 a pound steaks, continuous parties and the finest alcoholic beverages someone Else's money can buy.

...and then blame any problems on the guy whose tax dollars pay for your sorry ass to fly around the world on your 4-year vacation.

::)
Don't bite the hand that feeds you.
-
You have to work before you can have a vacation.
-
Shoot...I've worked with a lot of people who would NOT take their vacation. They would just take the vacation pay without taking time off.
-
Don`t we also have the highest standard of living too?

My husband has a lot of vacation time saved up. We just never go anywhere. It's too expensive. He saves up his PTO for our daughter's doctor appointments, any day that she's sick, or when family comes to visit.

It's not vacation time libs want, it's PAID vacation.

So, we don't get French benefits?

Huh, I only worked for one company that offered paid vacations as part of the package, and that was only for 3 years. That was one of the CHOICES I made in my professional career path.
Oh, yeah, and having a job for more that 15 minutes (or however the hell long it takes to fail the piss test) helps too.
-
No maternity leave? Where did they come up with that. Your employer is required to keep your job available all the time you are out, and cannot even allow you to return to work until your doctor says it's ok.
It may not be paid leave, of course. That's why, DUmmies, you need to learn that competition doesn't work against you: It's a two-way street. If you don't like your benefits package, shop around, find an employer with better benefits.
It's easy. Provided, of course you have a marketable skill... oh wait...
Never mind.
-
Perhaps the DUmmies who post on DU *WHILE THEY ARE AT WORK* should count that internet time as vacation time. It certainly isn't productive work for the employer.
edited to add a couple of words

DUmmies are always talking about this sort of thing.
A family of four can't live on minimum wage. American workers don't get paid vacation or medical leave. American workers don't get health insurance. Makes me want to puke.
No, a family of four can't live on minimum wage. Minimum wage jobs are for teens living at home to get work experience. Part time employees don't get paid vacation or medical leave or health insurance for the same reason. In the grownup world, a part time job is for people who want to supplement their household income.
Sometimes, an adult may have to take a job with less than desirable pay and benefits. This may be to tide them over until something better comes along or because they have made some poor life choices and are starting over. Either way, here's what grownups do: Instead of whining, saying "this job doesn't pay enough for me to do that," or claiming that the dining room is overrun with earwigs, they work. Hard. They work harder than what the pay is. They work every hour offered them.
Do that and I guarantee that you won't be part time, making minimum wage very long. Possibly not even as long as the customary 90 day probationary period. I guarantee it. I've managed retail stores for many many years. Hard, dedicated workers are a tall glass of ice water in the middle of the desert.

I wonder how many of them pay the baby sitter for not showing up.

I just took a week off (four actual vacadays). Yeah, it was a "working" vacation-- I had a list of things I wanted to get done-- but plenty of time for lounging, walking on the beach (too chilly to swim) etc.
I was ready to come back by Thursday.
I suppose if I was at a resort or something it would be different. Yeah, it was nice not to have something I was required by someone else to do in exchange for a paycheck, but doing nothing-- after my own to-do list was complete--
I don't see how these workshy bums do it. I'd go nuckin futs quite quickly.

I have 5 weeks vacation and 12 personal days a year. I work for them.

I disagree sir. They can thanks to welfare, HUD, TANF, etc. I read some where, can't remember where now and too lazy to look it up, that a family of four on min wage gets, from the gummint, enough benefits that it is the equivalent of a family of four that make 60 grand a year.
Yes it pisses me off. There is NO incentive to better yourself.

You're correct. I forgot about all that other stuff. I shouldn't, but I did.

A single person can get up to $32,500/year tax free. I would imagine a family of four would be up in the $50s.

What part of Europe crashing and burning in front of their eyes do they not get??? :thatsright:

It's because of crap like this that is causing the economies in Europe to come tumbling down. Libs won't be happy until till we are all as miserable as they are.

Awhile back the son of a guy that works for me was injured real bad in a car accident. At the time estimates were he would be out from work at least 6 months to a yr. His employer provided insurance covered all medical bills and he has enough days banked that he would continue to receive a a full paycheck for 6 months. Then if he was still unable to return to work a disability insurance he pays a couple bucks a month for will kick in and he receives I think it was 50 or 67% of his normal income until he is able to go back to work. I think he was also going to check on Temporary Social security disability insurance payments also.
You see this young man showed up for work and planned for the probability if something should happen and he couldn't work for awhile.

Yes but that would take away money from DUmmies CHEETOES and drug fund.

My paid sick-time has been maxed out for a long time.
I look at it as an investment to an unknown future.
When I retire, shortly, I don't paid for it. I don't care. It's there if the need arises.
I have yet to burn all my vaction time. I don't really care.
I enjoy my work. I enjoy the people I work with, and hope I can still be productive until I can no longer do the work.
I don't complain and whine about my lot in life. It was my choice. I made the best of it.
You reap and harvest what you sow, early in life.
I planted what could sustain me, for mine.

What part of Europe crashing and burning in front of their eyes do they not get??? :thatsright:
Now men are requesting maternity leave to spend 6 weeks with their new born to Bond with them.
Strange world, preconditions are usually not covered in insurance and pregnancy when starting work is a preconceived condition.
The company now needs to grant a 6 week of leave of absence to the males that become fathers married or not, hold their job for them and hope the heck the man does not knock up 3 woman a year. The males insurance will not cover the mother but will cover the children.
Interesting dilemma for the honeymoon baby's. If the baby weighs 6 pounds it is considered full term even if born 6 weeks early. No insurance for the mother, a baby born weighing 5 pounds is considered premature and if the parents were married only 7 months then the mother is covered.
We have 128 hours a week free working a 40 hour work week. 512 hours a month and 6,144 hours a year. At 40 hours we work 1920 hours a year. Paid holidays and and vacations for a week or so add in to the free time.
So to figure if you do not get a weeks vacation just work the 40 hours a week, you net one heck of allot of time to spend as you wish.
Please some one check my math. 40 hours of work out of a 7/ 24 hour day X 365 days a year. How much time is free outside work ???
I am a klutz at math but I believe that without adding in over time and vacation paid time working for even minimun wage I have more free time to get a part time job or kick back and do nothing, more time for family then those in any other country has with their paid vacations.
So after 15-20 years one gets 5 weeks vacation and 6 personal days, add it up with the 6 weeks leave of absence for personal problems, we work less then the rest of the world.
So the hamburger's flippers make a small wage, they can work another job and still have more free time then the professionals that work 18 hours a day to bank roll and live high off the Hog.
So who is content and happy here, the little man with a roof over their head or the Big time people paranoid that they will loose their useless huge homes that make them no happier then the little guy that lives in a paid for 6 room home.
Must be fun to own and worry about paying for a huge Yacht, the Club fees, the docking expenses, the up keep and the price of gas to take them out and about. It is fun to see these huge ships with helicopter landing strips and the crew in nifty uniforms running about the decks that the owner will visit perhaps twice a year.
We the poor buy the $4-500 dollar kayaks and spend our free time with cameras and at peace just moving slowly about getting out of the insanity of today's life. Yes we do go into harbors and check out the boats that are moored or at dock with a million dollar boat with crew.
Who has the fun, the owner of the boat that charges past life as they make their money deals from inside quarters and live a life of no true reason.
The little guys in the kayaks that use no fuel, no technology but what they know about the wind and the tide.
Not so far off topic, even the poorest of us can experience more then the wealthy.

Poor DUmmies...always trying to convince themselves they're special & different (just like everyone else they know) but in reality they're deathly afraid of being different. That's why socialism appeals to them. It's okay to be mediocre when everyone else is.

Yessss, they certainly are.
I'm pretty much a plain mediocre person. I fit in. I do my part to help others.
I do, however resent the DUmpmonkeys demanding I fit with them, and provide for them.
I will bend over backwards to help those unable. I will not tolerate those that are unwilling.
