Title: national anthem at sporting events
Post by: dandi on May 29, 2012, 03:35:37 PM
Looks like the Memorial Day weekend really got the patriotic juices flowing at The Hive.

national anthem at sporting events
This practice began during WWII.

But why? Do we have to play the national anthem at evry large gathering sports event?

We don't play it during little league games or youth soccer games.

And the "god bless america" during the 7th inning stretch that has been done since 911.. Is 11 years long enough? Can we move on yet?

Can we just take the jingoism away from our sporting events, please?

1. I always thought it was silly when we were told, as schoolchildren, about the ritual songs that were
sung before sporting events and other events in the USSR and Nazi Germany. No one could tell my why that was weird and scary, and our anthem wasn't.

I'm OK with the national anthem, but the "God Bless the USA" at the seventh inning stretch is an abomination. I hate it.

4. I hate hearing G bless America at ball games too. Luckily, Washington only plays it on Sundays

and not for every game.

I don't mind the National Anthem before the game. It is a good moment to collect your thoughts before the game.

Ever hear Glenn Donnellan of the National Symphony Orchestra, play it on his electric Louisville Slugger? It is quite awesome:

2. Good luck with that.

Let's not forget greenwood's God Bless the USA. Any body wanna try sitting and talking
thru that one while attending a NASCAR event

5. I can't agree more ...

unfortunately, we're stuck with it.

For many years after 9-11 you couldn't leave your seat during the seventh inning stretch at Yankee Stadium until GBA was over.

I hate that ****ing song.

7. I avoid almost all sporting events, so it isn't a problem for me, but

I think the practice is beyond silly.

And 'God Bless America' - I hated that song the first time I heard it and I was only 7 at the time. Sung by Kate Smith on the radio. My dad loved it. But then he hated Chuck Berry.

11. I'm pretty tired of the militarism ... glorifying war ...

Just sayin'

12. I despise "God Bless America"

It's a horrible song. It is only sung to further the theocratic tendencies of our conservative populace.

It's the same reason why they want prayers at high school football games, graduations, over the PA during first period, etc. The theocrats won't be satisfied until Christian prayers are mandatory at every social function from coast to coast.

I never stand and never sing GBA.

21. Its always seemed silly to me.

I say do away with it.

Hey, piss twizzler indago, here's another thread that you might enjoy.  Wanna join the DUmmies in bashing the National Anthem?

Here's a suggestion for ya, DUmmies.

Every home game Sunday at PETCO Park in San Diego, the Padres honor all the recent MCRD graduates by playing the Marine Corps Hymn during the game (4th or 5th inning, IIRC.)  Go ahead and sit in the upper first base side in front of them and bitch about it.  Hell, sit ANYWHERE in the stadium and bitch about it.

G'head.  G'head.  Do it, faggots.

Don't question their patriotism.

True, you can't question something that's not, nor ever has been, there.

Let me guess, before I even read the thread, they hate the anthem being played?

Yep! I was right!

*Yawn*.

Get some new material, DU - Please.

Your Nielsen ratings are going to suffer, then Skin's might be forced to cancel that live action sitcom altogether.

I have an old friend from high school that is one of these Godless liberals.  I have seen her in social settings over the years, and I even spent a weekend with her and other old friends, wherein she declared that there should be a limit on how much doctors should be allowed to make.  Not charge, MAKE.  Oh yeah, she is close to a 1%'er, drives a BMW convertible.  She raised her children as Godless liberals.  So,  I see her at a funeral a few months ago, and shock, shock, her eldest daughter is living with a black man which mortifies her.  Her seldom working son has impregnated a girl he has only been dating for 2 months, and she is mortified that the mother-to-be will have to be treated at low-income clinics, the baby will be born at the Medicaid approved hospital, and they signed up for WIC and EBT.  She is not even putting the subject out on Facebook because of her embarrassment.
Yes, I spent a weekend with THAT.  I wish I could take credit for writing a creative bouncy, but sadly, this is 100% true.

Mortified you say. That doesn't usually occur to dyed in the wool libs as they scan the devastation they have wrought. Maybe there's hope for her.

Nah, she is hopeless.  I tried to talk to her during that weekend, and it was like listening to a MediaMatters sycophant.  And at the funeral, she had already defamed her 40K BMW with an Obama 2012 bumper sticker.

40 years ago you have found me every Saturday night at the local dirt racetrack. Just before the main event of the evening they would line up the late model sportsmen cars and they would take a parade lab or two. Everyone would stand, take off hats/caps place them or hand over their heart as they played the national antheme on the loud speaker system.... the sound of that mixed with the deep thoarted sound of some hot V8's really gave me a thrill. :-)

Same here, but I liked the 6-cylinder division when they came idling out of turn 4.  Sounded just like a diesel locomotive coming at you!

As far as the anthem, we play it here for everything from HS football games to backyard tractor pulls.  The only difference is we don't have the flyover like they do at NASCAR events.

And yes, I'm a redneck!   :-)

You know, strong patroitism must be a southern thing. Many years ago I read an article that stated that other than the state of West Virginia, no other states in the union had given a higher percentage of it's population to the defense of this nation (military service) than the southern states.

That is one of the reasons I like NASCAR so much. Before every race they show the national colors, role out the flag, sing the national anthem, have a fly over, and say a prayer. They also have a deep love and respect for the troops. That is also why liberals hate NASCAR.

I love the Star Spangled Banner before sporting events, with two huge exceptions:

1. When it's sung at a tempo that takes five minutes to complete. I was at a baseball game last week where the girl singing the anthem did that. She had a very nice voice, but it took forever. The national anthem is a song of triumph and joy, it's not a funeral dirge.

2. Far worse than anything else is when the anthem is performed by one of those urban yodelers. People who can't sing try to warble each note. It's a combination of camouflaging lack of talent along with the usual minority performer's "look at me, look at me" attitude.

The DUmmies know that, admit it, and frequently talk about it, though in a derisive and mocking way. Yet out of the other side of their mouths, they'll paint the South and Southerners as traitors to the U.S. who never got over the Civil War and still hold secession in our hearts.

It takes a special kind of crazy to hold two polar opposite ideas in their festering little minds at once, and believe deeply in both of them.

DUmmies, predictable as usual.

This is only tangentially related, but I have a small bitch.  Our tiny town has a parade each Memorial Day.  The high school band marches in it.  Is it too much to ask that they learn some patriotic songs?  I think they only know two songs:  Hang on Sloopy and Something by Styx.  They played the anthem at the flag raising ceremony at the end of it all, but they didn't do a very good job at it.  I think the Anthem should be played or sung with excellence only.  Play it like you mean it.

I can't believe they're avoiding patriotic songs out of fear of offending DUmmies; these northern NY towns are very traditional, with the Legion usually the center of the community.  That and the Church.
