So it's Memorial Day yet again and once more normal Americans are bombarded with justifications as to why those of us that wear the uniform of the U.S. Military are not heroes.
Those of us that follow the antics of the DUmmies get bombarded with the could stench of the anti-military types more than others.
But you know what...you're right DUmmies...we're not heroes.
I know this is going to lead some of the lurking DUmmies to scratch their heads and wonder if I'm leading them into a trap.
I'm not I promise. We're in agreement on this point.
See myself...and I believe I speak for every veteran on this board...didn't sign up expecting a red cape and a big red S on our chests.
We didn't wake up one day and decide that the path to hero status was enlisting in the military. It was something more than that. Something you morons will never understand in your self centered "me me me" world you live in.
The ones that going looking for some kind of hero status are either quickly disillusioned with true military life and get out after a couple years...or get killed trying to be that hero they signed up to be.
Ask any recipient of the Medal of Honor...to a man they will tell you what they did wasn't heroic and that they aren't heroes...they were just doing their job...or ding what needed to be done to save their buddies.
Me personally...I look at it as repayment for being able to live in the greatest country in the world.
Now you may be asking yourselves "then why get so upset when we post our threads"...well...that's an easy one.
While none of us look at ourselves as heroes and that we felt a calling to serve and protect this great nation...the one thing that pisses us off to no end is having people that live within the freedom provided by the 1.5 million men and women in uniform tell us hat they think we're a bunch of baby killing war mongering murderers. It reminds me of some spoiled brat child...unappreciative of what they have.
You DUmmies are unappreciative of what you have in this country...because you've never had your rights as an American citizen truly threatened or taken away...no water what you claim.
No we're not heroes...but neither are we deserving of your unappreciative...ignorant ...completely cluless mockery either.
Have a good Memorial Day.
You're welcome.

^^ Hi5

You're welcome.
Thank you good sir for your service.
I think most soldiers just want a little appreciation rather than scorn for their service rather than hero worship. Though my own opinion is that anyone who sees combat on behalf of this nation regardless of politics behind it is a hero to me.

Well, yeah, it's not like you can blend into the background wearing those kind of primary colors.
 :-)
Well said, TRG, and (unfortunately) totally lost on the ass-douches at the DUmp.

Have you see the colors they are trying to make us blend into the background with these days?
:thatsright:

Thanks...and you're probably right...but IMO it still needed to be said and taken back to the hive by the lurkers.

To me, the hero was my buddy next to me, that didn't survive. :salutearmy:

TRG
Well said.
Memorial Day brings a certain sadness to me, because of my buddies that didn't come back. I miss the good times we had and now are just memories. So I just crack another beer and salute them.

At the expense of seeming idealistic and naive I re-enlisted after a 16-year break in service because I missed the caliber of people you meet in the military. They don't see themselves as heroes and I don't see myself as a hero but damned if I haven't come to admire so many.
Whatever virtues I took with me in to my civilian life I learned from my service. Surpringly or not those life lessons got me promoted at every job in short order. What I thought was mundane to-be-expected behavior was an ethic that is apparently in short supply. I wasn't a hero, I was just doing what I could to emulate those I knew were better than me. Apparenty right-place, right-time, right-uniform doing the right thing was the minimum you could get away with in the Army but it proved to be absolutely extra-ordinary to civilian employers. I learned from those we'd best call heroes.
I'm not a hero.
But I've gotten to stand next to plenty.

Oh, I know. The Navy, in their infinite wisdom, went with the blue digital uniform that would camouflage you very well - if you fell over the side of the damn ship.

No kidding and spot on. It amazed me how common sense was such an uncommon virtue to those in the "real world".

Well said, Tx. ^5 as well.
As I've said many times, I don't miss the Navy so much, but damned if I don't miss the people--most of them, anyway.

H5 for this. You spoke eloquently for this veteran.

For another perspective.
To Those Who Served In The Military
May 28, 2012 | Filed under Heroes,Military | Posted by David Robertson
When you took your oath and put on that uniform, you stopped being a civilian, laying down your personal freedom and other rights. You gave Uncle Sam a blank check pertaining to your life, saying that Uncle Sam could do with you whatever was needed, including sending you into a situation in which you would not survive. If you served during peace time and never were sent into battle, then you still were ready to go to battle at a moment’s notice.
Your life was not your own. You could not quit if you wanted to because Uncle Sam owned you. During the days of the draft, many men were forced to be in the military; they had no choice. Now, the draft is gone, and no person in the USA can be forced into military service. So, current military personnel are that by choice. As a result, they live by different rules, ones that required the sacrifice of personal liberty and comfort.
If all goes well, then the one who enters the military will not have to endure armed conflict. However, when one enters the military, one does not know if all will go well. The person takes a gamble, hoping to never see combat. Plenty of people have taken that gamble and have won. They have donned uniforms and performed mundane tasks. They never fire a shot at an enemy. They never enter harm’s way. Yet, their military service is still vital to the security of our nation, because they keep our nation’s military strong and ready for whatever may come.
So, must one become wounded or die to be a hero? Must one enter the line of fire to be a hero? Although heroism may end with a bullet or an explosive device, where does heroism begin?
It begins when you take your oath and put on that uniform, because you stop being a civilian and surrender your personal rights so that others will not have to.

Well said from me as well. Even better then what Col. Jessup said in 'A Few Good Men".

You are very humble, but it my eyes, you fought for my freedoms, and I will always hail you for for your valor.
