What are your plans for Memorial Day?
I plan on taking son and some other Boy Scouts to put out flags at the Veteran Cemetary here. And then we will go swimming at my brother's lake. Grill some steaks and just relax with the kids.

Not sure, but ti's the day before Memorial Day that is the biggie for me.
Combined Choirs--Battle Hymn of the Republic. We kick serious ass on that. O-)

We will be at state UIL band competition and as soon as my daughter is done with her performances we will be hitting the road for NC to visit my son before he's deployed.

Carrying the Coast Guard flag for the American Legion in the local observance and parade. Placing a small flag on the grave of a good friend who served in WWII.

MEMORIAL DAY is a special day. Perhaps, however, it should also be thought of as, “REMEMBRANCE DAY.â€
Please take some time to remember the importance of and thank our fallen heroes who sacrificed their lives for our freedoms. As you observe this special holiday, remember what it means to be an American. It is not a day for political posturizing and speeches. It is not observed as the day when schools are dismissed for the summer, or when the swimming pools open, or when families go on their vacations.
To some, this is just another holiday; to we veterans, and to the men and women in uniform today, and to patriots, it is a time to remember, and to honor our fallen comrades who gave their all during their call to duty and country. Please also remember those who are presently serving in our nation’s Armed Forces - the Army, Navy, Marines, Coast Guard and Air Force - protecting our freedoms and our country, ever vigilant, during times of both peace and strife. If you see a veteran or a member of the military, give him or her a smile and a “thumbs up;†it will be appreciated.
At 3 PM on Memorial Day many radio stations play the “Memorial Day Anthem†(Also known as, ON THIS DAY). If you hear this tribute while you’re at home, I ask that you pause to reflect on what it means. If you’re driving, you may want to turn your headlights on as a way of recognizing the significance of this day.
Please –tell everyone you see today, and every day, that we must remember to put the “Memorial†back in Memorial Day. If we don’t do this, maybe no one will, and someday, perhaps no one will remember or even care.

Hit my sentiments exactly, CG. Prayer on a day like Memorial Day (or the day we're allocating as Memorial Day) has special significance.
And then, I'm playing a band concert/ceremony (? - dunno about this, as I've not played the gig before) which occurs AFTER the parade that I ain't marching in Columbia, MO.

I'm going to be staying pretty much south of you. I figure I'll leave Pfluegerville and stay down that way until I can get to I-20. I'm going to be staying as far away from large cities that day as possible. The last thing I need is to get bogged down in traffic somewhere. I want to get to NC as quickly as I can.
Next time I ride up that way I'll give ya a holler and we can drink a cold one. Hell, if you meet me at that Flying Saucer place I was at up there last year we can drink a BUNCH of cold ones! LOL

This Memorial Day happens to be my 18th wedding anniversary. So my beautiful bride and I will probably just hang out and enjoy each others company.

I'm going to a VA service. Unpacking. Grilling for friends. Fitting some horses with tack for the summer, and I hope to get a couple hours of fishing in. Have to work on Memorial Day, but plan to make it a shorter day. No one wants to do therapy on a holiday.

I am going to be watching my daughter in the parade, then going to a veterans service at our "Soldiers Park". After that, I am going to visit the grave sites of my family members.

Nothing too exciting here...In addition to grilling with my honey, I'll be seeing The Avengers with my her. While I know I'll be riveted to the movie, still, my right arm can have a mind of its own at times and I know it'll be around her sweet shoulders.

I am recovering from having an appendectomy at Summerlin Hospital in Las Vegas earlier this month so I was not up for any sight seeing. I did sneak in some shopping. :)
I'm off work until June 1st and still pretty sore at times. My weekend will be quiet (most of them are) and Monday a contractor will be here to install a couple new windows and a couple other projects that I need done. Being off work always seems to give me carpal tunnel from using my debit card! :rotf:

We're taking SR's buddy down here out for dinner. His wife went to St Louis to visit the relatives, so he's fending for himself here. It should be nice---debating between a place called Spanish Point Grill and another one called Casey Key Fishhouse. Both of them are on the water, places where people can use the docks for their boats. Of course, we'll be using the parking lot for our car.
Should be a relaxing day.

My job is pretty bad. They could care less about their employees, cause it's a simple enough job that they can get rid of people and replace them immediately. But as much as it sucks, 9.50 an hour at a shitty job beats 0.00 at no job.
Hopefully one of these PD or FD apps I'm putting out turns into something.

Have you ever wondered what happened to the 56 men who signed the Declaration of Independence?
Five signers were captured by the British as traitors, and tortured before they died. Twelve had their homes ransacked and burned. Two lost their sons in the Revolutionary Army, another had two sons captured. Nine of the 56 fought and died from wounds or hardships of the Revolutionary War.
They signed and they pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor.
What kind of men were they? Twenty-four were lawyers and jurists. Eleven were merchants, nine were farmers and large plantation owners; men of means, well educated. But they signed the Declaration of Independence knowing full well that the penalty would be death if they were captured.
Carter Braxton of Virginia, a wealthy planter and trader, saw his ships swept from the seas by the British Navy. He sold his home and properties to pay his debts, and died in rags.
Thomas McKeam was so hounded by the British that he was forced to move his family almost constantly. He served in the Congress without pay, and his family was kept in hiding. His possessions were taken from him, and poverty was his reward.
Vandals or soldiers looted the properties of Dillery, Hall, Clymer, Walton, Gwinnett, Heyward, Ruttledge, and Middleton.
At the battle of Yorktown, Thomas Nelson, Jr., noted that the British General Cornwallis had taken over the Nelson home for his headquarters. He quietly urged General George Washington to open fire. The home was destroyed, and Nelson died bankrupt.
Francis Lewis had his home and properties destroyed. The enemy jailed his wife, and she died within a few months.
John Hart was driven from his wife's bedside as she was dying. Their 13 children fled for their lives. His fields and his gristmill were laid to waste. For more than a year he lived in forests and caves, returning home to find his wife dead and his children vanished. A few weeks later he died from exhaustion and a broken heart. Norris and Livingston suffered similar fates.
Such were the stories and sacrifices of the American Revolution. These were not wild eyed, rabble-rousing ruffians. They were soft-spoken men of means and education. They had security, but they valued liberty more. Standing tall, straight, and unwavering, they pledged: "For the support of this declaration, with firm reliance on the protection of the divine providence, we mutually pledge to each other, our lives, our fortunes, and our sacred honor."
They gave you and me a free and independent America. The history books never told you a lot of what happened in the Revolutionary War. We didn't just fight the British. We were British subjects at that time and we fought our own government! Perhaps you can now see why our founding fathers had a hatred for standing armies, and allowed through the Second Amendment for everyone to be armed.

Many years ago I had the honor to walk the Yorktown battle field.
Parts have been eroded by the bay waters.
Some still exist.
I went back into the wooded areas where preperations of battle were made.
For the life of me, I can not comprehend the deprevation and hardships those men undertook.
It was a very moving experience.

I slept through Memorial Day. Woke up at 1am Monday morning with the most horrible backpain and then spent the rest of the day throwing up from the pain. I am better today but it was horrible. I was moaning in my sleep hubby says. :bawl:

I got a call to fly the JetRanger Saturday. Took 4 loads of passengers. It was in support of a fund raiser dinner for a local hospital. Got to log 3 hours, 2 day, 1 night. One of my passenger's wanted his wife to come, but she was afraid her nerves would make her nauseous. We got into an interesting conversation about comfort zones stemming from the fact that we were both pilots. We were talking about how flying was out of her comfort zone, but if anyone were to tell us we could never fly again,we would be displaced out of our comfort zones.

Had a good time with the family and some friends, culminating in some swimming time with Da Boy. Then we drove up to Ft. Collins to decorate a couple of graves of family (They didn't technically fall into the classification for Memorial Day (they each reported to St. Peter from their beds, and not from their respective battlefields), but it was still a good experience for my son.)
