Title: Soil testing
Post by: seahorse513 on May 19, 2012, 09:57:59 PM
Make sure before you put in any seeds or veggie plants, have your soil tested..
My niece, who lives in Newmarket, NH had her soil tested and it had lead in it!! A little background.. Newmarket is an old mill town on the Lamprey River. Dover and Exeter are also on this particular river. In the last 20 years. this town have been renovating these old mills, making them into Condos or office space. I wonder if during disposal, lead had seeped into the river.

When my nieve bought this house, it was kinda old, a real fixer-upper, I don't think all the remnants were disposed of properly. Sometimes business or private home owners will rent one of the huge garbage dumpsters, which they did and burnt the rest of it via bonfire. It sounds like they didn't catch it all..
The guy said that they would have to dig two feet deep,(back hoe??) and refill it with new soil..(just the garden part, of which she has planted stuff...) I feel so bad for them...trying to make a go at life....with two little ones..

If money is a problem she can grow vegetables in 1 of those big pots. We've been doing that the past couple of years because of a disease that's been going around here effecting tomatoes.
