Oh my.

I would really appreciate an answer to my questions: Why can't we buy stars for other members?
And why are Skinner, EarlG and Elad silent on this topic?
I just do not understand any of this.
I have to go out now; I will check back later to see if there are any answers.

1. That doesn't make sense. Same price, same privileges. Who cares where the money came from?
And more importantly, why do they care?

2. If you want to pay $60, I don't see why you couldn't... but it would be a one time payment for that member. The problem, I think, comes from those who would want to chip in on a donor star, but not pay the whole thing. I assume that is what is not possible, as well as the paypal discount for ongoing subscription.
Now that a lot of people are getting close to their "renewal" date for their DU2 star, I think this issue is really going to "heat up." There have to be one heck of a lot of DUers who just can't do the $60 right now.

3. The software isn't set up to do that.
I don't know where the thread is now, but somewhere it was explained that the software isn't set up to take donations from one member and apply them to another.
It may be something in the works.

12. Sounds like you'd have to mail them a check with explanation of who it is for.
Ms. Toad (6,027 posts) Profile Journal Send DU Mail Ignore
17. They currently only accept payments through PayPal.
http://www.democraticunderground.com/124043952
You don't need a PayPal account to make any of the multi-year upfront purchases. You still have to go through PayPal to make the purchase, but you can do it with a credit or debit card without having to create a PayPal account.
You do need a PayPal account to purchase a recurring yearly subscription. This is because you can't set up a recurring payment with PayPal unless you have a PayPal account.
Although the last time this question was raised (payment other than paypal), someone contacted the admins and was told they planning to make a change: http://www.democraticunderground.com/124079589#post17
He (Skinner) sent a reply, and it's good news. The admins need to carve out some time to make the changes, but it looks as though there will be more payment options than the PayPal-only options currently on the Renewal page
Now, whether the change will allow people to buy stars for others is a different issue...but it sounds as if there may be mail (or other) options for membership.

22. Dang, that sucks. If it were me, being the uppityperson I am, I'd mail it to the address in contact bit.
Probably a reason I was never a mod on DU2, figuring out how to go around the rules.

4. Thanks for pointing this out Peg
I wasn't aware until you brought it up. Someone bought me a star on the last DU2 drive.
I had hoped to pay forward when this one expires. I'll have to figure out another plan.
westerebus (1,926 posts) Profile Journal Send DU Mail Ignore
10. Really!!
There is no reason I can think of that would stop me from gifting someone a star if the means are in place to do so.
If I can give folks hearts, I don't see what the problem is.
If that hint isn't big enough, may be I can get someone to explain it to you know who.
CaliforniaPeggy (94,998 posts) Profile Journal Send DU Mail Ignore
11. I did not see any way to do it when I looked at the donation page...
westerebus (1,926 posts) Profile Journal Send DU Mail Ignore
15. I know. We used too.
Who cares who paid for it if someone is willing to cover the tab?
Adopt a DUer.
It's not like you have to feed them, walk them and clean up after them or change the litter box.

13. Good question, CaliforniaPeggy, I wondered about that also as I wanted to donate to someone a few weeks ago, but I was told that you cannot do that anymore.
^^^not franksolich's mole; I thought that needed pointed out, because of rumors.
pa28 (3,034 posts) Profile Journal Send DU Mail Ignore
14. Maybe it's just the cost.
Previously you could dish out stars at $5 but I'm guessing fewer people would want to do that at $60 per star.
It would be nice if the admins restored that function because there are some generous and pretty well off people here who would be willing to help.
Apply to the rich bitch in San Diego, the sparkling old dude in suburban Baltimore, Pedro Picasso the Atman primitive in eastern Connecticut, the Bostonian Drunkard in Boston, the BeHereNow primitive in suburban Los Angeles, &c., &c., &c.
Don't every primitive just apply to CaliforniaPeggy; there's plenty of other well-off primitives.
But whether they'd be willing to help is another question altogether.

16. Mine ran out yesterday. I could have opted to have renewed but since I am involved in animal rescue I made the decision to give the $60 towards helping the animals. They are in need. Food and medical care for some of these animals that have been dumped, starved and abused is a top priority for me. So I will be glad to suffer through a few ads to make sure they have been helped. If the price wasn't so high or if I could have paid monthly without having to pay extra for doing so I would have done it. But in the end the animals win.
mentalsolstice (3,430 posts) Profile Journal Send DU Mail Ignore
20. I too haven't renewed for a number of principles even though I can afford it
And for some of those reasons I would be horrified if someone gifted a star for me. That said, because of my browser I don't see ads. Other than that I don't see any advantage to having a star, as I still get chosen for jury duty several times per month, and I have no desire to be a forum host.
I wear my starless status with great pride. That's $60 for a charity more deserving...The homeless, animal rescue, and so many more.
On edit: I think it's nice that some want to buy stars for others. It's good know members on here care about others. My post merely points out that a star doesn't really provide much advantage at DU3, it's really more of a status thing than anything else.
CaliforniaPeggy (94,998 posts) Profile Journal Send DU Mail Ignore
24. Having a star also enables you to post polls and do searches.
mentalsolstice (3,430 posts) Profile Journal Send DU Mail Ignore
28. Not interested in those either.
I just simply don't need a star, anymore than I need fancy forks.
MadrasT (3,303 posts) Profile Journal Send DU Mail Ignore
18. Good question.
Can't imagine it is inconveniencing too many people though.
$60 is too steep for me to even buy a star for me anymore.

21. Why don't you ask administration?
CaliforniaPeggy (94,998 posts) Profile Journal Send DU Mail Ignore
23. I feel as though my post here in Help & Meta IS asking them.
I've seen them answer other posts from other people in here before.
And also, I understand that they're not terribly responsive to PM's.
Ms. Toad (6,027 posts) Profile Journal Send DU Mail Ignore
25. I haven't had much response to either PMs or H&M posts - but the last bit of real information about another payment method being in the works either came in response to an e-mail or a PM to Skinner...someone did once suggest that Skinner was more responsive to e-mails than to PMs.

26. It's a really bad business model to refuse income.
Well, it's been three days since CaliforniaPeggy asked her question, and thus far no response from Skins.

60 bucks is, hell, a month of internet cable, 4 bags of cheetoes, and a new TV remote after replacing the current one because of cheeto grease and other unsavory bodily fluids in the buttons. Yeah, I can see why they are bitching and moaning. Typical DUmp mentality, though, raising rates in recessionary times ala tax hikes.
And I love the excuses people give. "Oh, my poor animals will die if I contribute to DU" as if they are angry they will lose their precious star. Frankly, I think what they are trying to do is to out the $10/year moles more than collect revenue from this insane setup.

The DUmmies are secretly happy that they don't have to fork over donations for someone else. When it was done on DU2, they always wanted the credit for the good deed, and that was the only reason they did it.
However, Skinner may be helping the DUmmies without realizing it. How many of the DUmmies donated a star to someone and it ended up being a mole from here?

I believe I read that Skimmer's attending the Cannes Film Festival this week.
Lots of DUmmybucks have been rolling in this year.

Are you sure he was at Cannes or at his Italian villa?

By the way, I seem to remember that in February, in response to an overwhelming demand (from sockpuppets belonging to Skimmer, Lord Marblehead, and the enigmatic Elad) Skimmer reluctantly agreed to once again peddle Valentine hearts for the DUmpmonkeys.
He agreed with a pledge that the money generated would be donated to the nation's abortion mills, since the Planned Parenthood slaughterhouses had recently lost some donors. He said there would be an accounting after Valentine's Day, and he'd advise the DUmpmonkeys just how much had been contributed to the to the cause of infanticide in their names.
I must have missed that accounting. Was there any money left for the abortion mills after Skimmer extracted his administration fees?

I play games on IWon.com. You can join charity teams and if your team earns the most amount of coins/tokens (whatever they are called), then a certain amount of money is donated to the charity. I have been on the Wounded Warrior team for a few years now.

We could just donate to the WWP directly and post proof of our donation. Like a conformation email we receive after we donate.

The primitives should all demand that the top 1% primitives pay for everyone else's stars. If Skins is unable to accept this, then they should all unionize and go on strike until their demands are met.
I'm seeing a lot of questions from the primitives but none of the "organization" and "demands" being put into practice that match what they want the common citizenry to do here in the USA and around the world. I suggest they try some of these methods, of which I constantly see them advocate, on Skin's and see where it gets them.

The answer can be found by following the paper trail.
Where were the six cases of DUmbass-funded Camus Cognac Cuvee (http://www.gayot.com/spirits/top10cognacs/camus-cognac.html) delivered?

What a cheapskate. :banghead:

Cash is a little tight here at the AR household. We are doing OK but with me in school there isn't a lot to play with. So with that said, being that I am so close and have access to a major military hospital and VA hospital. For every $500 raised I will work one hour with our wounded warriors and disabled vets.
Would do more but nursing school does tend to put a drain on the hours in the day. :bawl:
