Oh my.
Now, this Omaha primitive is NOT to be confused with the big guy:

If Washington DC cannot, for some reason, become its own state, then either:
A) Exempt their citizens from Federal income tax, or
B) Incorporate the District into a Maryland congressional district and allow the citizens to vote for Maryland Senators. I say Maryland since the District lay entirely north of the Potomac at this time.
On edit: The post is a reaction to the story presented in this DU post: http://www.democraticunderground.com/1014123872

1. Retrocession worked ok in the past ...
The part of DC that was south of the Potomac was re-joined to Virginia, and that worked out ok. It makes sense to merge the rest of DC into Maryland. Then all will have representation.

2. The "let Maryland absorb D.C." proposal has been around at least 20 years
The general vibe in Annapolis has always been they do not want the headache of taking responsibility for running it...
Well, franksolich has always been in favor of Maryland absorbing Washington, D.C., all parts of it excepting federal property.
And since franksolich has always been in favor of this, the primitives might want to re-think their own position.

Oh hell no! We don't want 'em! And considering how Marty O'Malley has just jacked up taxes, they might not think it's such a good deal, either.

Has anybody pointed out to them that incorporating the District into Maryland would result in the loss of three very safe Democrat Party votes in the Electoral College?
-
I always thought that the District of Columbia was basically it's own state anyhow?

Uh huh.
Inclusion of the District in Maryland would probably give Maryland an extra congressional seat, and a safe Democrat one, but on the other hand it would deny the District two U.S. Senators too.
That sounds like a good trade to me.
-
Oh Vivismom, you live in Maryland? I'm so sorry. ((()))
-
I'm sure the DUmpmonkeys are motivated by their innate sense of fairness in favoring moving DC into Maryland.
They recognize how absurd it is that three electoral votes are controlled, and conceded to the democrat candidate, by a couple hundred thousand crackheads.

Yes, or as my husband calls it, The Democratic People's Republic of Maryland.

DC doesn't have any Senators and only one non-voting Delegate to the HoR. They do have one EV.
-
Wasn't the reason for creating a non-state area as the D.C. so that one state would not gain advantages over the others by having the national capitol in its borders?
-

I'm sorry, sir; I didn't explain it well enough.
If the District of Columbia were to be granted statehood, it would have two U.S. Senators and one congressman.
That's why the Democrats want it to become a state. They really want this to happen.
By gluing it on to Maryland, Maryland would probably gain an extra congressional seat, but that's a cheap price to pay for avoiding the addition of two U.S. Senators.
But the District of Columbia has three, not one, electoral votes; this would also subtract two guaranteed Democrat electoral votes.
That's why it's urgent to as soon as possible slap all non-federal property in Washington, D.C., onto Maryland, so it can't become a state. If we don't get that done in my lifetime, I'm sure the Democrats will finally add it as the 51st state, with two sure new (D) senators and one sure new (D) congressman.
