Legendary disco singer Donna Summer died Thursday after a battle with cancer, sources close to the singer confirmed to FoxNews.com.

Summer, 63, was a 5-time Grammy winner whose hits dominated the charts in the 1970s. Her songs like “Last Dance,” “Bad Girls” and “Hot Stuff” were among the decade’s most successful.

She continued topping charts into the 1980s, with hits like “She Works Hard for the Money” and“This Time I Know It’s for Real.”

She is survived by her husband, singer and producer Bruce Sudano, their daughters, Brooklyn and Amanda and Summer's daughter, Mimi, from a previous marriage.

She made disco halfway somewhat tolerable.

Sorry, Donna. I couldn't go halfway with ya. It was that bad, though it was a damn sight better than rap or hip hop. At least it had rhythm, harmony, and melody.

She passed somewhat on the young side for this day & age but had a fair run. Wasn't a fan of Disco either but some of her songs when you heard them stuck in your head for awhile.

IIRC, she found The Lord at some point in the 90s.

That's very sad and prayers out for her family.  I was in high school during the late 70s and still find myself saying "disco sucks" whenever I hear one of those songs!

As old as I am, I still want to dance when I hear Disco.

An artist knows when they have arrived and the drag queens all dress and imitate them and the straights also love them and their Art.

Her music tapped into and across all racial barriers, sexes, ages and life style.

Donna had us on our feet and dancing  before MTV came along, before Rap, before the Acid head banging stuff, even those into Country & Western boogied down to her music.

I cannot at this time think of one song she sang that was objectionable to hear  from a small child, in fact the choices she made in her music, lyrics one could UNDERSTAND, hum along to and tap a foot to were really a one of a kind.

To My delight way back then I watched as my Mom and Dad in their early 60's took to the dance floor and danced to her Disco in Swing mode as they had in the 1950's, yes, one could adapt most any kind of dancing to her music.

The loss of her voice and the tremendous talent behind her, song writers, producers ETC.  made that era stand out apart from the ones to come in the future.

The Passing of an era and the end of it is difficult for everyone, but this is so personal to those that  did indeed  "Work Hard for The Money ".

God bless her family and Coworkers that did get into this NEW kind of entertainment and left some of us with great memory's of that time.

Heard about it on Rush today.

He went on to say that she was a conservative Christian who hated rap. She was married to the same guy for 33 years.

I detest disco music but my 1st ex wife was a disco diva before becoming a bobiez dancer.

May she rest in peace. (Donna Summer. Not my 1st ex wife)

Holy crap Tucker 30 some odd years ago your wife became a boobiez dancer ???

Well 40+ years ago I tried out to be a Go-Go cage dancer, miserable failure at that too skinny and little boobs .Plus I did not have the stammer or training in stretching and dance to do more then hop up and down for 6 minutes at a time.

If your EX could stay on stage for 20 minutes of gyrating to music, she was in better physical shape then you or your uncle Ted.

I learned at a young age just how hard a dancers life is, I could not follow that life as much as I loved to dance.

Today we have the pole dancers, amazing what they can do, both men/woman have to practice many hours a day to do their Art and not break their neck.

Boobiez dancing is not far from belly dancing in the far East.  This does not mean the female is loose or bad, it simply means the woman , be she a tap dancer or in the Ballet has found a way to express them selves.

Choices in life marry someone and except their life style or after the marriage change your mind.

I liked her songs. I really liked Hot Stuff   :fuelfire: and Last Dance. Last Dance especially has found its niche: Think of how many wedding receptions Last Dance has been played at at the end, and still is, and, probably will be in the future, too.   :whistling:

So very sad.  I loved her music, I loved my parent's Saturday Night Fever Album.  I could sing the dang thing in it's entirety.  I could also sing Lemmy, so don't give me crap about liking Disco.

 O-)

Saw a pic of you in high school, you were better looking than her then too.  It was a pic of you standing in the snow, in front of someone's house I think, with that fantastic hair.

You probably wouldn't believe what's on my iPod! If it ever fell into the wrong hands, it would mean the end of Western civilization as we know it, or possibly just Lichtenstein or New Jersey or Athens. Wait, the last one already happened. Good thing I mowed the lawn, huh? Ummm...what?...what was I saying?

Especially good for bike riding, too. Fast music for fast rides.

I....love to love you baby.... (is there a blushing smiley in the house!)

You look more like Stacy Keibler than Donna Summer to me.

But since I should stick to the topic, I'll say that I nadined the top 10 hits of Donna Summer and I recognized nearly all of them from listening to the radio.

Some of you may be too young to remember that people used to listen to music on the radio--before  el Rushbo, that is.

It is such a challenge to find music on the radio these days.  I miss it.  And I knew all of the songs too.

I have XM. I've had it for 5 years. Finding music isn't a problem.

I have it in my truck, motorcycle and home.

Oh Ma GAWD!

 :rotf:

We live in the same area of the country, you know what conventional radio is like around here.   On my way home from work after hearing about her death, I created a Donna Summer station on Pandora and listened to her music and other songs from that era.  Bo and Jim, Jody Dean, Jack, they're not doing that for me.  And if I'm in a Smooth Jazz mood, I've been out of luck for years.  I've discovered so many new artists because of Pandora that The Oasis didn't play when they were around.

As for talk-radio, things haven't been the same around here since Ankarlo and Greg Knapp left. :-(  I lost interest in talk radio soon after that.

I totally get what you are saying, our options for real radio are very limited, but when that is what you have, that is what you have.  Which is still better than no radio.

Problem is, when you live in an area where cell coverage is spotty to non-existent, you have three choices--the local drek, Sirius/XM if you have it, or silence.

Carlos, in that picture you noticed her hair?

 :-)

In the 70s I was a KISS freak and that morphed to NWOBHM in the early, early 80s which then followed a track of Hair Metal/Sleaze/Thrash/Etc.  However, I did like Donna Summer.  Her songs had beautiful arrangement, vocals, harmonies, and the like; you know, stuff that makes music actually fit the term "music".  I would normally glide past the local "pop" station unless I recognized a few artists, Donna Summer being one of them.

RIP, great lady...
