Title: Hello
Post by: UncommonSense on May 11, 2012, 01:16:42 PM
With the election close I've decided to become more active politically.  I'm in an uncomfortable place between Liberals and Conservatives and find I'm not accepted by either.  I don't strictly call myself either and I'm hear to challenge a few notions in the hope of learning.

I'll do my best to be civil and courteous and I hope others will do the same.

Thank you.

Welcome to the forum. If you can show some integrity, I think you will like it here. Any phoniness will be ferreted out rather quickly, and I can't imagine that would be too enjoyable. Honest debate, honest irreverence, honest sarcasm, just honesty in general as far as being true to what you present to the forum as yourself will stand you in good stead, I believe.

First welcome.

Second, the above advise is very good.

Welcome.

I'd like to hear more about your sentence above.

Allow me to help you:

How do you stand on fiscal issues?

How do you stand on social issues?

How do you stand on military issues?

Expounding further on the questions is up to you. Don't know how old you are, but if you're over 35, you should be a little set in your convictions.

He's all concerned about rights and stuff

Don't really care about the gay agenda, per se... Any more then I care about the rights of smokers (as I'm not one).  But if either group is having their freedoms violated, I would argue against those that would deny or take them away.

I know this is a really, really hard concept for people in this discussion to grasp.  :thatsright:

Perhaps he'll defend your rights too?

Sorry I missed this...I love to give you a little insight, but I'd ask you to ask questions that are a bit more specific...

Thanks!

Just give ballpark answers for the purposes of this thread. Shouldn't be that hard. You could say:

Love it.

Love it.

Love it.

or

Hate it.

Hate it.

Hate it.

or any other variation of the two, and expound further. You can't make it more specific yourself?

If you'd like to have a discussion, I'm game, but the questions you'd like to ask are up to you.

Cheers

How do you feel about:

The Constitution?

Gay Rights?

Rights to keep & bear arms?

The fact that our soldiers give up their rights/time here in this country to fight for us tirelessly every day with blood, sweat, and tears?

People from Democratic Underground, and their views?

People from Democratic Underground, and their views?

The Constitution

I think the original idea of the founders worked very well over the last 200 years.  I think globalization has challenged America and as a result we face some key challenges.  The founders tried hard to make a nation where States' rights were more important than the central government, but they largely failed. So today we have a "one-size-fits-all" approach by the plutocracy in DC, which is imposed on the States whether they like it or not.

The question in my mind is, should the states more closely resemble the system in Europe, where you have many "states" linked together only by issues of currency and defense, or should we think of ourselves as one nation largely run by our central government.

Frankly, I can see arguments on both sides, but it's hard for me to imagine that if were were 50 separate states with a weak central government that we would be as strong as we've been over the last 100 years.

But before someone rips into me for my political blasphemy...  If you disagree with me, persuade me, I'm pretty open at this point....

Gay Rights?  Since I'm not familiar with all the rights gays are asking for, and I don't keep up on them, I'm not sure how to respond.  You've undoubtedly read the thread containing some of my thoughts that I see no reason why they shouldn't be allowed to marry...but beyond that I'm open to more specific questions....

Rights to keep & bear arms?

With more arms in this country then people, from a purely practical point-of-view the idea that you can "ban" guns is lunacy.   In a more practical sense, I feel safer in this country knowing that I have the means to defend myself..You know the whole cop on the phone or gun in the hand.

I think culturally we're all ****ed up.  Most peoples perception of guns comes from the TV.  Hiding behind drywall or a car door, shooting a gun in a hallway or in a car...  The idea that you can point a gun at someone and they will cease their drug crazed tirade and put their hands up...All fantasy.  There are too many people that own guns who have a false perception of them.  They buy them for defense and either are to eager to use them or aren't prepared to.

The fact that our soldiers give up their rights/time here in this country to fight for us tirelessly every day with blood, sweat, and tears?

Ask me something more specific to this point and I'd be happy to comment.

People from Democratic Underground, and their views?

Contrary to popular opinion, I don't keep up with the DU or peoples opinions there.  I view each issue on my interpretation of it's merits.  I look for evidence and logic and engage in rational debate to try to come to a consensus in my own mind.

So again, I'd welcome specific questions...In the mean time I'll familiarize myself with the DU....

Thanks.

Quote fro "UncommonSense"...
" I see no reason why they shouldn't be allowed to marry...but beyond that I'm open to more specific questions...."

You were shown a plethora of good reasons why gays shouldn't be allowed to marry, in 2 threads, therefore you "saw" them.
It would be more honest for you to say "I reject any reason why gays shouldn't be allowed to marry."
You did at one point admit it might not be good for gays to marry, but asked why shouldn't it be allowed in a society anyway. Warped thinking from my perspective.
