Title: Missourians - Getting Rid of Claire McCaskill
Post by: Eupher on May 04, 2012, 07:33:51 PM
...is obviously the objective.

I've begun recently to look at the various candy-dates to oust Claire.

First, and apparently most popular, we have Sarah Steelman. She's in her early fifties and got her start in politics in 1998 when she was elected to the state Senate, and continued in various positions since then, including as State Treasurer. Presumably her master's degree in Economics qualified her for that gig. Through some shuffling, give-and-take, and who's going where, she's been involved in state politics ever since. She's served on various boards, etc.

On the issues, she appears to be solidly conservative.

The only negative I can see is that she, for all intents and purposes, is a career politician. For reasons which should be obvious to everybody, I distrust career politicians as a matter of course.

John Brunner appears to be next in the lineup, in terms of popularity and in terms of posing the biggest challenge to Steelman. He was born into a business environment; his parents owned a small home products company in the St. Louis area and it would appear that John, armed with his MBA, grew the business handsomely through hard work, tenacity, and good business acumen. He is not a career politician, a fact I find to be a plus.

I've not explored either of these candy-dates enough to make a decision, but I'd like to open this thread and invite commentary from DAT, TVDOC, and other Missourians who are preparing for the coming election.

Steelman did get the NRA endorsement, a big point with me.  Interestingly, Blunt declined to endorse or dis any of the, saying they were all good and each of the three had helped him in the past, I hope they can stay away from a slime-fight.  August is a long way off.

At this point I like both Steelman and Brunner, I don't know much about the third candidate, who I understand is a Congressman from outside my district.

Yeah, Todd Akin, who appears to be struggling somewhat:

I met Claire McCaskill's predecessor outside the congressional building while touring D.C. This would have been early 90's. Jim Talent. For some unknown reason, he walked up to us (my family), on the sidewalk outside, and asked if we would like a tour of the building. Did we ever ! He took us all around there for literally the whole afternoon, never anything other than a gentleman with a desire to share his passion for his place of work, and his pride in the history and tradition of the place. He had ample opportunity to campaign, or solicit campaign contributions, but never the least hint. When we finished the tour, and thanked him profusely, I left in somewhat of a state of shock. To this day I wonder if he mistook us for some important people he thought he recognized. I really did pull for him to beat Claire, and retain his seat, but I had to do it from a state one to the south. To this day, not only because of Kim's generosity of his time, I resent Claire, and the Show Me state voters who unseated him for her.

The thing that put her over the top wasn't her own neglible appeal, it was a ballot item on heavily increasing the minimum wage (Strangely, MO remains in the 'Sucking wind' class at job generation now), which got the 'Free shit for meeeee!!!' Dem voters out in unusually large numbers for the 2006 election.

I think that Steelman sorta has the TEA Party nod as well (here in MO, the TEA Party has declined to actually "endorse" candidates in the past).  She's run for either Governor or Lt. Governor in the past election cycle, I believe.....if memory serves......

All three are good......I think that Todd Akin is from the Columbia area, and also from a political family.  I'm leaning toward Brunner as well, although I don't have a problem with any of them.

It's great when the field has no candidates with measurable negatives........
