1. Read Trotsky's History of the Russian Revolution.......

Very good and very scholarly without being dry and boring. And it DEFINITELY doesn't have a RW slant. 

I've read it at least twice.

What was it like?
Well, my great- grandparents, who were peasant farmers from a German- occupied province of Russia, fled to America as soon as the Bolshevik Revolution broke out. I'd say that kind of says something about which direction they saw their country heading.
