Do you think you, a teenaged son, and a 70 yr old elderly dad could live off of $400 a month for food?
Do you think you, a 2 yr old kid could live off of $250 a month for food?
If you were "starving" would you let the following happen? would you buy a bag of chips or would you try to buy a bag of rice?
The month wasn't nearly done, but Shalita Harris' food stamps were. After feeding her four kids, she was left by early last week with just 50 cents on her electronic benefits transfer card, which she combined with some loose change to get herself something to eat: a bag of chips.
Harris can attest to that. Her kids -- two boys and two girls, ages 2 to 12 -- go through a loaf of bread a day and four gallons of milk a week, she said. The boys alone can consume $200 worth of food a week.

I am kind of confused and want to be set straight if I am not thinking correctly. Sure kids have to have a healthy meal but if you were that poor wouldn't you think you could get by with buying frozen veggies, ramen noodles, crap meat? I could make $400 go big time for my family of 5 with rice, beans, milk, flour, eggs, etc...you know, basics.
I am hoping someone is going to tell me I am wrong because I am not getting these "woe is me" people and their mentality. :o
-
Well I can see going through 4 gallons of milk, easy (my kids did, and I only have 3). And possibly the bread.
But you can buy a 3 lb bag of apples for 3 bucks, and that will go a lot farther, and is healthier than 3 buck bag of chips.
When my budget is tight (and it's getting tighter) chips, "snacky" food (like cookies, or cheezits or whatever), soda (any purchased drinks) are the first thing to go. Not a difficult concpet, really.
-
It's bullshit, Gina.
No way in hell does a family HAVE to go through 4 gallons of milk a week, or a loaf of bread a day -- store bought bread, that is, and fresh milk.
I remember MANY times drinking reconstituted dry milk (nasty stuff, but I drank it) and it was a fairly common thing for me to bake my own bread.
You're absolutely right in thinking that lesser-quality cuts of meat can be used in stews; beans can be used in lieu of meat; and other dietary adjustments can be made to adjust to one's budget. Ramen noodles are cheap, but that isn't much of a healthy meal due to all the sodium, I would think.
Bottom line is - Ms. welfare momma is simply going to have to dust off the top of her stove and actually USE the f'n thing. Ditto for her oven.
As Flame aptly says, the snacky foods, chips, and empty calories might simply have to go away until Ms. Welfare Momma hits the lottery (because you KNOW she's buying tickets every week).

Isn't the only thing that has the high sodium is the "sauce"? One wouldn't have to actually use it. I have had ramen without the sauce and it's fine.

I don't know. If I want pasta, I cook pasta. That rahmen stuff ain't pasta to me -- it's student food. :lmao:

Right but it allows one to live so I don't really care about the sodium at this point. :hyper: What it is is they want to eat like kings when they don't even have the money. I guaranDAMNtee ya that if they were the one's putting forth their own money to buy their groceries they wouldn't be whining about not having money to eat. They would budget like the rest of us workers and live within their means but because it's "free" money they want to eat like someone that works and produces the money on their own. Maybe they should just give you $100 bucks and a packet of seeds and potting soil at the welfare line instead of just $.
-
Lower-grade meat's actually better for stews, it makes the broth much richer because more fats and gelatin boil out of it and into the broth. And feeding people on those amounts of money, sure, but they won't be getting nearly as many sodas, snacks, and ready-to-eat/heat foods as they would on half-again or twice that much.

and..........
Why doesn't the gov't just give out those blocks of cheese, evaporated milk, peanut butter and stuff like they used to? my grandmother got that stuff because her father was on assistance and living with her. Is there a reason they don't give that out anymore? That cheese was like velveeeta and dIIIIEEEElicious

I've heard the same thing... that gummint cheese was some of the best stuff you could get. :rotf:

Then again, she can always get off her fat, lazy ass and get a job. Taxpayers already pay for meals at schools for all of her little bastards. Perhaps she shouldn't have had f'n kids. Sorry for being callous, but I don't remember signing on to raise anyone's f'n kids.

Not to jerk your chain but I read an article the other day about sending 'back packs' of food home with the little darlings to get them through the weekends. It did cause me a WTF moment. We feed 'em at school then have to send food home for the weekends? And what pray tell are we doing for vacations? Has anyone read stories of kids dying of starvation over vacation?
Inquiring minds want to know.

Well, when you want to create slaves, you have to keep them alive to do your bidding. It doesn't benefit Democrats to have all these people being self-sufficient. The Democrats ancestors knew this well. The slaves on the plantations always had food.

Well, the parrot will eat, the cat will have something to shit in and momma can get some pot.....now what is she supposed to do about the kids?
Yes, they are that damn stupid.
-
Those kids will be producing even more parasites who will create more parasites who will create more parasites and so goes the cycle. This shit will go on until this nation collapses under its own debt weight and I fear that's not far off. Then they'll be looting and pillaging. Won't last in the rural and suburban areas due to gun owners, but you people in the big cities up north are pretty much f'ed.

I thought about that last night. While I was getting dressed this morning I pulled out my .22 from my underwear drawer and made sure it was loaded. I have guns hidden in the strangest places around my house. :panic: I also have knives to. Someone is going down with me if they kill me :lmao:

I'm not sure, but it wouldn't surprise me to learn that all that subsidized free food like that, including dried milk powder and stuff-in-a-can is going to all the starving pygmies in Africa.

Some of these people, just need to be bitchslapped.....This one woman came in(mind you , we are not a supercenter, so our food section is somewhat limited) buys about 200.00 from our store(hamburger helper, cereals, none of which have any nutrional value, IMO). Then she goes to Shaws(somewhat expensive, unless you have one of the shoppers savers card), Why doesn't she go to a supercenter and gets everything she needs( there's one 5 miles away?) Coupons and the sales flyers are so helpful, and she could build meals around those???

zeit--I don't know about the weekends, but you know that around here they give the kids subsidized breakfast and lunches, and will feed the little "yutes" during the summer months as well.
I haven't done a whole lot of shopping with Scoobie doing the bulk of it, but I'm pretty damned sure a family of five can eat pretty damned well on $100/week. And we don't go through anywhere near a loaf of bread a day or a gallon of milk every other day.
-
Someone needs to teach her how to budget and meal planning I think it should be a requirement to get assistance.
I've got a better idea. You want food stamps? Fine--the only place the EBT card will EVER work is at the local EBT store, where you can get foodstuffs at discounted rates.
Only one catch--no junk food, no sodas, no lobsters, no tenderloin. BASIC meat (chicken, pork, hamburger, etc.) dairy, bread, and vegetables. You know, healthy shit.
-

I blow $150 a week at Costco easy just blowing money, but that's fine because I work for it and can spend as I like. But I buy a huge carton of eggs $10, 5 gallons of milk @ $2.35 each, and 2 loaves of bread for $5.00.
The rest of that money is just fun stuff I buy like clothes, cokes, non-essentials. So I don't get how one can not make $400 last for a month.

You actually USE that cannon??? In a weak moment, I bought one once, and after blowing through a couple of boxes of ammo, I traded it for something a bit more practical.......an Uzi......

What the mother should do, is encourage her children to drink water, instead of milk.Show a little restraint woman...

I have it loaded for shooting, yes, but I don't like it. The first time I shot it, it fell out of my hands from the recoil. I will use it though to kill. I prefer my .357 S&W revolver for just everyday thug shooting. :lmao:
-
Another idea, is to make food budget class mandatory once a month while on EBT cards. No show, no EBT cards.
-
I guess that (back on topic) the problem that I have with the story that is highlighted in the OP is the math.....
Stated: Kids consume a loaf of bread a day, and four gallons of milk weekly......
OK, around here I can buy generic (store brand) bread for $1.00 a loaf = $7 per week Milk runs about $3.50 per gallon, times four = $14 So for the bread and milk, she spends $21 per week.......what is she spending the other $179 on to make it up to her stated $200 weekly cost?? My wife and I can shop at Walmart and come home with enough food for a MONTH for less than $179.....
Doesn't wash......
doc
-
You are right Doc, it doesn't wash. Pasta goes along way, as does rice. There are so many books and other literature than can help one learn how to budget the food. She should make her kids drink water before each meal, then they wouldn't need such big portions.
-
Why doesn't she go to a supercenter and gets everything she needs( there's one 5 miles away?) Coupons and the sales flyers are so helpful, and she could build meals around those???
Well, you can't expect the precious little parasitic piece of shit to go out of her way, can you?

I WHOLEHEARTEDLY agree with this! There should be food banks set up where food is donated and, if need be, provided by the government at the lowest cost possible. "Edible", not gourmet. The food should be base label. If they want nicer things and better food, get a ****ing job. Provide them with just the basics. I'd give the f'ers a box of MRE's and tell them, "see ya in 12 days". I'm sick to death of these parasites. :censored:
-
I really can't understand all of this whining about food costs from these mooches on food stamps.......I really can't.....
I have to say that I'm really proud of my wife......she can stretch a food budget to the point of absurdity.
Granted, food costs have increased substantially over the past four decades, however, back in the '70s when I was on leave of absence from my regular job to complete my postdoc.......which paid peanuts......we had three children in the house, and for a family of five, she prepared meals.....GOOD meals.......for a total of $100 per month (or less). No food stamps or aid of any kind, she just prepared food wisely. We didn't live on rice and beans, we even had steaks occasionally, and fresh seafood. She turned leftovers into great soups and stews, made casseroles, baked desserts, etc. When this feat is considered, you must also understand that she HATES to cook......with a passion, but she did what she needed to do, and even though we no longer have any real financial constraints, she still spends less on food than anyone else that we know.
Our children were going to a "brown bag" school, absolutely NO school lunch program, so she prepared and packed lunches every school day for all three of them out of that hundred dollars....
I simply don't understand what the fuss is about.......unless it's just a scam.....
doc
-
Well, doc, it IS a scam.
It's the welfare mommas who wouldn't know a skillet from a filet; whose first thought on cooking anything involves either a microwave or a Whopper at Burger Puke.
It's the scam artist who whines about not being able to feed her 6 kids fathered by 6 different fathers, all of whom are in jail or dead, and then getting another free handout -- as long as the handout consists of Twinkies, pretzels, chips, and dip.
It's the lazy SOB who couldn't be bothered to even consider saving a dime by writing a letter, because above all, the damned cell phone minutes are running out because of 1,200+ texts per month.
Don't get me started....

How to feed a family of four two meals for less than $20.
1. 4 pound roasting chicken: $8-10
2. 1 bag whole carrots: $3
3. 1 head celery: $3
4. 1 bag onions: $3
Day 1: Roast chicken with 1/2 of the vegetables
Day 2: Boil carcass with the rest of the vegetables, diced = Chicken Soup (add dumplings if you have flour, eggs, and soda or Bisquik)

While in Alaska we had a family come in for an obesity consult on their not-as-yet-school-aged child. Sure as shit, the child was obese.
He was drinking a gallon of 2% milk a day and 5 large glasses of juice on top of it.
The medical provider gave her best judgment and opinion on the matter.
The family left somewhat peeved.

BD--I can get TWO chickens at BJ's (or the local "cheapo" chain) for less than that. Roast them or make "beer can chicken" out of even just one, you've got enough to feed five people, and still have enough for chicken sandwiches for lunch the next day. Make a side salad to go with it, or as you said, boil the carcass and make soup (noodles are cheap too.)

Yeah, a whole chicken is about 4.79 at Walmart. Add .50 cents of rice and some seasoning, and you can feed a family of 4 a couple of meals or, as was previously stated, make chicken and dumplings. These parasites aren't worried about feeding their kids. They're wanting as little effort on their part as possible.
-
As for milk, never had a gallon that didn't spoil. Just don't drink enough of it or make enough things with milk. Being a bachelor, my sustenance is comprised of 99% meat and that's on the grill.

I'm thawing out a roaster I picked up at the commissary. 6.25 lb @ .89/lb, $5.56 for 2 dinners and a week's worth of soup!
I thought chickens at the civilian stores were more expensive.
Edited to add last sentence.

Here ya go, a corned beef for 6 bucks (not the top cut) and a .99 cent cabbage. That'll feed me for 3 days, little over 2 bucks a day.

Let's do a little math here while we're at it, boys and girls.
An 8 oz serving of 2 percent milk has about 120-130 calories. 16 servings per gallon, if they're going through 4 gallons a week (64 servings/week) that means everyone gets at least two servings per day--250-260 calories. Two slices of bread have about 120 calories. One loaf per day means they're all getting at least two servings a day from there--another 240-250 calories.
500 calories a day from bread and milk alone. And we're not into the sugars, chips, fatty foods, etc.
I'm gonna take a wild ****ing guess here and say that none of these people in this family are exactly pushing the low end of the BMI index. Just guessing, mind you.
-
As for milk, never had a gallon that didn't spoil. Just don't drink enough of it or make enough things with milk. Being a bachelor, my sustenance is comprised of 99% meat and that's on the grill.
Same here, being single. If I do have recipes that call for milk, I will get just enough for that recipe and that's it. Usually just the pint size works.
-
They f'ed up when they made a bunch of other shit available with the EBT. Make NO mistake about it, this was the liberals' intention.
-
When I was bacheloring it, I rarely if ever went through a 1/2 gallon in a week. Even with five people in the house now, it's rare we go through more than two gallons.
And with spring and summer coming, I drink more water and tea (and beer!) than anything else. A 48-pack of tea bags makes 6 gallons, and costs something like $3 at WalMart (if that.)
Hell, I live on sun tea from now until about September. And the only sweetner I ever put in it is the very rare package of Splenda or Sweet-N-Low. Regular tea and a slice of lemon. All good.

And even if you don't like the soup, I love taking the bones and making stock out of it. I make a killer pork green chile and chicken stock is one of the ingredients. I'll get Scoobie to like my green chile burritos if it's the last thing I do, dammit!!! :lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

No, actually, I'm not surprised at all. I think we're all saying the same thing here:
1. The welfare whiners expect the EBT handout to provide every food item that their lazy asses think they need, to wit fresh milk and store-bought bread. The idea has apparently never occurred to them that they can actually save money and eat well by buying perfectly digestible food items that don't command a premium price. Homebaked bread is incredibly cheap to make - bread flour, yeast, a little sugar and a little oil. Oh, and some water. The highest cost item in that list is probably the yeast. And while it's generally considered nasty, if you've got a kid downing a gallon of milk a day, I guaran-damn-tee you that amount of consumption will drop considerably if the lazy ass welfare whiners substitute reconstituted milk for fresh. Or cut it half-half. Bottom line here is, the welfare whiners don't exercise any sort of budgeting process -- they're lazy, their every need is provided, so they piss and moan when something doesn't go the way they think it should.
2. As has already been pointed out, the caloric and carbohydrate intake typical of lazy fatasses like many of those who brandish EBT cards is considerable. Most of those who wear those cards like badges of honor are not candidates for the Donner group in the Sierras in January.
It's a ****ing outrage that things like Red Bull drinks are EBT eligible. Who makes these bullshit decisions? Sonsabitches need to be keelhauled. :argh:

Answer:
Walmart will sell you a 12 pack of Red Bull for around $20.00 including tax on your EBT.

The Basics
EBT benefits are redeemed at the checkout counter. The EBT card is swiped and the cost of eligible food items is deducted from the participant’s monthly benefits. Aside from hot foods, nearly any type of food product (including seeds for planting) can be purchased using EBT.
Limitations
In order to prevent abuse of EBT benefits, many items can not be purchased with EBT benefits. These include alcohol, vitamins and medicines, tobacco and household items. Because protein powder often falls into the category of supplements, it can often not be purchased.
Solution
Check out the product label on the back of protein powders to determine if they can be purchased with EBT. If the label head reads “supplement facts,†it is considered a supplement and can not be purchased using EBT. If the label head reads “nutritional facts,†then the protein powder is classified as a food, and EBT benefits can be used to purchase the product.

then I found this forum which is really a sad topic

The one with the money on it can be used anywhere, just like a reg debit card. here the cards r the same looking. I get just stamps and it can be used at Papa Murphys.]
As for the deli, anything that is not hot, can be bought. I think those rules r the same everywhere and the little rules depend of the store.
Can't buy redbull at Walmart but you can at the gas

:argh:
This is NO bouncy, but something that actually happened to me in the Evans Walmart last year. I'm behind a guy that has a bunch of stuff in his hands. My buggy is half empty/full, whatever you want. I pull my stuff to the back of my buggy and ask him if he wanted to put his stuff in the front. He had a lot of stuff in his hands and the line was pretty long. He did so and we started talking a bit. He finally gets to the register, grabs my case of diet coke, and tells me he's got it, as if to do me a favor and pay for it. I tell him that's not necessary. He looks at me and says, no, seriously, I don't mind. I have EBT. Walking out, I pass him putting his things into his SUV, with a GA teacher's tag. That could be his wife, assuming he had one. The average salary of a teacher around Columbia County is about 50K. Not exactly Ramen wages.
^ that is the f'n mindset of these parasites. It's not their money. What the hell do they care? This guy was white. I was literally disgusted by that shit.

There's a building right across the street from my office. It used to have just one tenant in it, but about a year ago, a tenant moved into the vacant suite. That tenant was some psychological counseling place that contracts for the government that deals with parasites. I'm assuming they government requires something like that to continue services. There's a good looking woman we've been ogling over these past years that works in the first tenant. Now, this is what we have to contend with:
Spot the parasite:

Government solution to unemployment: Create an agency, make up some high sounding name for it, hire fat asses to work there, pass out checks, problem solved.

No, they don't work there; it's a psychological place. I'm thinking they go there to get some kind of BS proof on why they're supposedly disabled and why we, the taxpayer, should have to keep funding their fat asses, all the diagnoses being paid by the taxpayer, of course. Could be a lucrative business, ****ing over the tax payer and all.

Oh. The county not to long ago built a new building for that here. Thank you Jimmy Carter.....well, that's when it was mandated for us.
