Any suggestions for evicting a raccoon and maybe up to 6 kits from a garage?
Let me begin by saying this has been an ongoing problem at my mothers house for a couple of weeks now and I think we are going to call in a professional. She left the unattached one-car garage door open one night and has had at least one raccoon in it now for two weeks. At least we think it is a raccoon?
Guy from the city came out and put two traps that were supposed to be raccoon sized, but traps had the food removed and the trap door snapped shut which kind of indicates the raccoon may be large enough to get the food, trip the door, but the door is coming down on its back and not locking the critter in. Which means it must be a heck of a big raccoon. Or something? The guy from the city said he isn't coming back.
Everyone we know has had some suggestions. None of which sounded good to me. The footprints this critter is leaving look to be about the same size as the footprints my German shepherd/border collie mix who weighs about a hundred pounds has. So I know this critter has to be pretty good size. Whatever it is.
Reason I think there may be some kits involved is because it is starting to smell like a zoo in her garage now.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions or wishes of good luck.

1. I assume the guy "from the "city" gave you the 'blessing' to go ahead ....
I only ask because a friend of mine in Lakewood, CO was ticketed and had to go to court for capturing and attempting to relocate a skunk that had invaded his property. I still haven't figured out the whole in and outs of that one, but it still might be wise to check with both state and local wildlife folks for any particular ordinances--and maybe get their advice while you are at it.

2. After talking to the guy from the city and seeing the look on his face and the tone of his voice ...
... when he seen the size of the footprints and empty traps, my guess is he could live out the rest of his life just fine if he never heard another report about this raccoon problem.
That was my take anyway.

3. Are you saying the animal has taken up residency in the garage ? Garden supply centers sell different kinds of devices that scare away the critters. But there are organizations that specialize in those areas PAWS is one of those. People take squirrels or raccoons -birds that have been hit by cars or are hurt and stranded by the roadside- and those animals are treated, nursed back to health .than released back into the wild. If PAWS doesn't handle that in your locality-they will refer you to the oganization that does. They will tell you exactly what to do and what not to do.
If the critter were invading your garden- there are all kinds of nifty devices on market to chase those critters away. First try calling a large landscape supply outfit- for advice about that and products. Than call PAWS . you may be able to rent a large trap too.
You got a big one-that is for sure.

4. Yes, the garage currently belongs to the critter which has moved in
I was told that April and May are the months for mama raccoons to have their kits so I am sure she plans on staying until that event. Perhaps a little longer? That is if the garage is still there? Very destructive animals. She already has three or four holes chewed through to the outside.
Thanks for the suggestion of PAWS.
Will give them a call tomorrow first thing.

5. If that were happening here in MN I would call the local Department of Natural Resources and
ask them for help. I have seen bears in the community trapped and taken back into the wilds by their officials. A racoon can be visious so I would not try it myself - especially when there are kits involved.

6. Get someone to run a couple of saws in there.
We had a Mamma move into our barn with our babies a few years back. My husband had to cut some 2x4s for some project or another. 2 minutes after he started working, Mamma started moving her babies out!

8. Viscious Dobermann would assist nicely

A .22 LR or, better, a .410 bore shotgun would do the trick, too.

Grouchy old Don lives in Chicago, though.
I don't think that would go over very well in Chicago.

In certain areas of Chicago, it would blend in nicely with the background gunfire. Also, there's .22 LR rounds that are subsonic and don't sound louder than an air rifle.

Ooops, yeah, I forgot about that; it actually would blend in, in Chicago.
Amid the gunshots of black youths shooting each other.

The more I think about it, even a .410 bore shotgun would seem kinda out of place (too loud), amid the 9mm and other rounds. If one could pass it off as an AK going off, they'd be alright . . .

1 ) Empty garage.
2 ) Place in garage anything with a functioning gas or diesel engine.
3 ) Start all engines.
4 ) Close door.
The vermin will either leave, or they won't. Either way, the problem solves itself in about an hour, without violating any local trapping or firearm laws.

5 ) Fix the exit holes first. (He claimed the 'coon has chewed 3-4 holes in the garage to the outside. Let's NOT assume he's smart enough to patch those before starting with #1,)

If it don't have footprints like 5-fingered human hands, it ain't a 'coon.

Someone needs to construct a few raccoon-sized replicas of a 1975 AMC Matador, sprinkle a few hundred raccoon-sized cigarette butts and empty Canadian Club bottles, and put up a tiny URAW (United Raccoon Auto Workers) banner in the corner. Then Don would adopt them all as his brothers and the case would be closed.

Just when I was going to suggest using DUmmie logic (tear down the garage) ya'll come up with wonderful final solutions.

ARGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG
Stopped in old neighborhood in VA. just to look at our Old Home. Had a time finding it as the wonderful trees placed curb side were gone for one block. Rest of the place had their trees and looked the same except for the growth of the trees.
Found an old neighbor across from where we lived and asked ----WHERE are the Trees. ????Why is this one block missing the trees ??
As she told me Coons had moved in to this one block, were finding a way to chew their way into Attics and running about in the trees.
HOA now in force, not in my time, tried to trap them but the Coons were too smart and someone had the bright idea that it was better to remove the trees on that block then cost other home owners to pay to remove a problen 3 blocks away. So as the street side trees were a city problem, they came in and removed the very trees that gave the area its beauty.
Insane, the area all of it had street shaded trees, gave value and nostalager to the old homes. After 20 years when I returned the area was still old south except of the one block my home was on, total alian to the rest of the area.
The kids and I did not reconise that block of homes the kids grew up around with, it was an ugly block within a neighborhood that was still beautiful.
This is what happends when HOA's come into a settled comunity , there for 80 years or so and decide to make changes for the new folk that are hyper controlling.
Coons, a small problem for those home owners, they could have gotten traps free from the Aspca, only one block had this problem. so the trees that made the neighborhood what it was were taken down. don't know why the coons did not just move on to other streets, but the result is, this one block looks all so different from the rest of the area.
So sad that the HOA distroyed this block of wonderful old homes with the gracefull trees and the the atmosphere of the South. End of the street 4 houses down the trees are still there, for some reason they had no Coon problems.
All out memorys were gone, whoever decided to do this travesty to just a few homes, the HOA that that brought this forward, because a few complanints of coons in the area and leave other old homes alone with their trees is not and has not done this unless they got Money from someone for doing so.
One can get rid of Coons in the attic or cellar, easy but to destroy 50 year old trees and shrubs to do it is NUTS.

I no have coon problem.
They have me. :whatever:

Coons do not make great pets, they can be chained to dog houses and treated as dogs but they are coons not dogs
They need water to wash their food to eat, they need room to jump and climb, fun little guys but they are feral not tame.
One cannot keep a Coon in the house , cannot tame them or expect them to act like the family cat or dog.
Try to litter box a baby coon, lots of luck. Some people do litter box baby skunks but that is another story.

Gee, when DU swore Zimmerman had a coon problem, they wanted him arrested. Don has a coon problem and he's conspiring to murder them.
I want DU locked up, NOW.
