Oh my.
Skins's island is pretty dull today.

Since Meta seems to have eclipsed Help, is it possible to start a new forum or split this one?
I have no problem whatsoever with the kinds of discussions that happen in this forum. Clearly its what the members want and it remains popular. There are few if any locked threads and, all in all, it runs well.
Except . . . .
The Help part seems to be lost in the Meta part.
So here's the idea. Leave this forum as Meta and let it keep on keepin' on. Then start a new forum (or maybe a group) that is strictly DU Member-to-Member Tech Support or some such. Basically, it is the Help part of H&M. Leave all the Meta, all the drama, all the pissing and moaning in one forum and bring all the plain old member to member help to the new forum.

1. There is a tech support forum
http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=forum&id=1095
Help threads in here seem to have competition to see who can be of first assistance, so it isn't like they are sinking without responses. Most requests for help I have seen are answered quite quickly.

3. Help threads are often of broad interest. But if they sink into the abyss of Meta . . . . .
. . . . . . very few people get the benefit. In a tech forum, threads are visible longer and available to more people. In fact somebody who has questions may not even have to post a thread if their question's already been answered.
The problem right now is the help to meta ratio is heavily weighted toward meta.

5. True that, but that is the nature of the internet.
If it bleeds, it leads.
My only concern would be that people would be afraid to ask for help in here because of all of the but in that vein, the speed in which questions are answered should mitigate that somewhat.

4. Yeah, I subscribe to that.
That's kind of a different forum, really. What H&M was supposed to be was help with DU from a technical perspective. That group s for computer problems.

2. Trumad posted a help question just the other day
And it got answered. Quickly.
Of course it also spawned 17 alerts 12 hidden posts and 127 new threads discussing the same.

8. I think it's going fine.
One improvement might be a pinned ask questions thread.

9. I've agreed with that suggestion before.
To a newcomer to DU who is simply seeking help in its operation, the "meta" aspect of this forum makes us look like we're all crazy!

10. It would make someone with a nervous condition think twice about posting here.

Let's be honest, it's not the "meta".

Skins's island is pretty dull today.
Actually it's been kinda dull since they became primarily focused on Zimmerman.
I scanned through pages 4, 5 and 6 with many of those threads only having 3 or 4 replies. Granted that can change, but for the most part, Zimmerman is king.

I'm wondering if traffic is down on Skins's island, like it is on freerepublic (it's up very much here).
I've been checking both freerepublic and Skins's island, and it used to be that if one "refreshed" the first page about every thirty seconds, every minute, presto! they'd changed.
Now it's like it takes a long time for a primitive or a member of freepublic to post, changing the page.

According to Alexa DU is ranked 1,191 in the US, Free Republic is ranked 1,102, FR definitely picked up ground and surpassed DU, and in Global rank DU is barely ahead of FR.

It's been down on FR since JimRob went batshit and banned everyone but lurkers, nuts, and trolls from the DUmp.

What did you expect, Mike? You're a bunch of whiners, just like all libs are whiners. Go to any lib pol site and what do you see? That's right: Whiners.
Look Mike, get it together son, before one of us has to get it together for you.

So Skimmer is going to take advice from a DUmpmonkey who recommends tuna fish spaghetti sauce?
-
Yeah I saw that, was wondering if it was someone pretending to be him though.
That was my first thought too but then I wondered who or why? After all, he posted on FR for a while (H&M is the greatest forum ever) and that's not a secret (nor has it gotten him kicked). It's not like making a mildly negative comment could get him in trouble or anything.
Unless I'm being too logical?
