Five unusual turn-ons for men
By Bob Strauss

Marcel Proust wrote, “Let us leave the beautiful women to men with no imagination” — and if you’re loath to take dating advice from a French author who wrote a 10,000-page novel about a guy eating a cookie, well, you’ve clearly been brainwashed by decades of movies, TV shows and magazine ads. Me? I empathize more with all those less-than-perfect single women out there. I’m talking about those ladies who may not know that most ordinary guys are attracted to the quirks and so-called “flaws” they’re terrified will doom them to a lifetime of singlehood.

Now that I’ve opened that door, there’s no way to avoid the one supposed “imperfection” that keeps women awake at night above all others — their weight. Allow yourselves to be reassured by Dr. Judy Kuriansky, author of The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Dating, who says that “many men like plus-sized women with soft bellies. This often happens when they had a mother or nanny who had that kind of body and they felt comforted and enveloped by the mother figure — protected from the world or the insults of other children. Also, men like women with large hips for anthropological reasons — it used to mean that the woman was fertile.” And in my own experience, the vast majority of guys (at least, the ones who aren’t on TV shows or in movies) don’t care much about a few — or even 20 or 30 — extra pounds.

So what other surprising things do a significant number of men find attractive about women? Here are five for your delectation:

1. Glasses. Says Jeff, posting on the Yelp.com message boards: “Every guy loves a girl in glasses, but women never seem to know that. It’s not like we’re keeping it a secret — why would we? It’d mean fewer girls in glasses! Some glasses-lover needs to infiltrate Cosmopolitan magazine and get the word out!” For some guys (mostly the lazy ones who grew up watching teen gross-out comedies), glasses connote a nerdy personality and a high IQ, which can have their own intrinsic appeal; others appreciate them as fashion accessories, while still others have a natural affinity for them because spectacle-wearing women remind them of their mothers or early childhood crushes.

2. Freckles. Just as the deodorant-producing industrial complex has created legions of denatured, pheromone-free men (it turns out that plenty of women like guys with an earthy, musky scent), the powers-that-be in the cosmetics industry have convinced women that their natural freckles need to be buried under thick slabs of spackle and bronzer. Tonja Weimer, writer of the syndicated “Savvy Dating” column, says this is all based on a huge misunderstanding: “Freckles represent being unaffected, natural and relaxed. To some men, they also make a woman appear somewhat ‘innocent’ and less jaded.” If you don’t have freckles, try wearing less makeup, which many men also appreciate.

I find no reason to disagree with this, including the last 3 reasons. Not necessarily with the possible causes mentioned, but...

Thoughts? Criticisms? (http://yahoo.match.com/y/article.aspx?articleid=11876&TrackingID=526103&BannerID=1330766)

I like the reference to "spackle" and "bronzer". Leave the bondo alone, girls. It ain't gonna fix what's wrong -- if in fact there's anything wrong at all.

My stepdaughter is a beautiful kid...(Insert here the fact that all my daughters, step or natural, are absolutely beautiful)...she has a lovely face, a very nice figure, a bubbly and quirky personality, and is a good Christian (in the true sense of that phrase.)  Yet she is so self conscious of her few imperfections, like a little acne, that she usually makes herself up before even we see her.  (which doesn't help the acne at all, of course.)  If that kid could see what males think of her...well, the clean thoughts that males think, she'd have no worries about a few minor imperfections.  Of course, as we all know, far too many females would be very nasty.   :(

I really appreciate the recent trend in articles that expose the airbrushing that star's photos receive...even the "most beautiful" of all  just aren't good enough.

Some of the most beautiful girls I have ever known were NOT super model, glamor girls.

They were just ordinary gals with a wonderful personality. One gal was plain, not even pretty, but she had guys fawning all over her...Why? she had a positive outlook and a smile that was so genuine it lightened up the whole room. and that was her real personality, it wasn't an image or a mask. Whenever she smiled her soul was smiling too.

I lucked out as I was able to go to singles groups at several churches in my time. The core group of the biggest was about 80, and when fun events were planned we could double that amount. The benefit was I could meet gals in a non-threatening situation and get to know them. That and such settings were more likely to showcase gals with serious Christian values, and most were conservative to begin with.

So I guess that shows my unusual turn on, a gal who is happy with her life will have an attractive personality. and a real smile will always warm my heart.

I've been close friends with a girl (now a real lady) since 5th grade. She was thin and tall and didn't have many dates as we went through high school, during which time she also became much prettier. I never asked her out but was just a real good friend.  :argh:

She went to Northwestern and got a master's in something,  married a guy I knew in high school (a year ahead of us), now lives in Oregon, and she has become a card-carrying, proud true conservative. She and I still communicate on the internet, and we visit with each other with our spouses at our reunions. And her husband and I are friends, too.

All Women are beautiful some just open their mouths and destroy the illusion.

Attitude and bearing can Accentuate the Positive and/or exemplify the negative.

Beauty is much more than skin deep. It doesn't just go to the bone, either. It goes to the soul.

Ahhhhh , my first boyfriend, Lord kill a goose he had the worse acme I have yet to see since.   Whole face just a festering puss pocket of whatever.

He was smart, rebuilt cars at 14 and shot a doe and had doe skin gloves made for me for my birthday.  Did I say smart, he was a straight A student from first grade.

I had had a crush on him from the 6th grade, he was a Charles Bronson type ugly as hell but one that was loyal and true.  I ignored the blemishes on his face and loved him for what and who he was.

Mom however was so critical of his looks, in fact I think they so horrified her, that she encouraged me to date the other boys hanging about that had no such problem.

Long story short I broke up with the one male that loved me and dated these good looking dudes that were looking for something better then me.

50 years later I still wonder what my life would have been like had I stayed with this boy that won a full scholarship to MIT, and rose to the top in the Army reserve.

So 5 turn ones for men--why not 5 turn ones for woman--

Smarts for one and a reader of all kind of books.

Ability to solve problems be it a leaking faucet to ground hogs.

A man not afraid to ask direction in a strange place.

A man with no problem changing dirty diapers or getting up at 2 am. to give a bottle to a baby.

Last but not least a man that will take no shit when it comes to their wife or kids.

I have a thing for redheads. Girls with glasses aren't that bad, some of them have that librarian look. Which is a major start up. Then a redhead with glasses who looks like a librarian would be awesome! :)

Butt, eyes (brown like that chick in the commercial about buying rock climbing equipment), legs, and intelligence. I'm not one of these guys that thinks ditsy is cute. Breasts aren't something I'm worried about so long as A) they exist, B) they're not too damn big and/or saggy. Those are turn ons for me.

Just saw the commercial I was talking about. It was a Citi bank commercial and she's standing on top of a rock overlooking what looks like something resembling the Grand Canyon.

She's cute, but that commercial makes my stomach flip flop at the end when she's on that rock. Wonder if she's really on it, or it's photoshopped? There ain't enough money to get me up there if it's real!!  :o :o :o :panic:

Gina, Celtic Rose and I are all redheads. Gina wears glasses most of the time, CR and I wear gold wire rims for reading. We can so rock the librarian look - it's pretty easy when one is naturally intelligent.  :-)

I wish!!! Actually, I'm uploading about 230 pictures for 3 interiors (after editing for too dark) and 4 drivebys and my brain is fried. I have to pull all info for the reports yet, and type them in. Oh yeah...and I have to work at JTV tonight from 9:30 to 3:30. And 6 of them are due before noon tomorrow, with 2 of the interiors due before 7:30 am.   :panic: :panic: :panic: :panic: :panic: :panic:

My wife wears glasses.  And, remember that music teacher I used to talk about?  She does, too.

My wife has told me in the past, "I'm not perfect."  My resonse?  "Neither am I, and that makes both of us human.  That's one of the many reasons I love you." O-) :-)

The sexist in me thinks women should have long hair. Some women can rock the short hair look but most just end up looking like a boy.

It is said that the eyes are the gateway to a persons soul, that may be. Body language may be saying one thing but the eyes say another.

Yep, concur with that except for one thing -- ladies, if you're a bit on the portly side or if you're somewhat older, your hair might need to be a little shorter without the butch or 1" all-around cut that makes you look like a boy.

Slightly shorter than shoulder length would be roughly the max length it should be.

Heavy women with long hair just look bad. Sorry, but that's the way I see it.

Now that I'm older, I prefer to keep my hair longer rather than shorter.  In college (early 80s), I used to have it super short -- sort of a punk look.

I currently have waist length hair.  My hair gets really curly when it is short, and I actually have to do stuff with it.  Long hair is much more low maintenance.  Stick it in a bun or french braid if it needs to be out of my way, in a ponytail or regular braid if I'm running out the door, and it is done.

I could certainly stand to lose some weight, but I don't think my long hair makes me look frumpy.

Well, Hell to the YEAH!

If you look at people with the right frame of mind, ALMOST all of them have positives to outweigh the negatives, you just have to want to see the good enough to ignore the not-so-good.  Sure, there are exceptions like Nadin, CalPig, Moose-shell...
