An American soldier says he released the photos to the Los Angeles Times to draw attention to the safety risk of a breakdown in leadership and discipline. The Army has started a criminal investigation.
The soldier who provided The Times with a series of 18 photos of soldiers posing with corpses did so on condition of anonymity. He served in Afghanistan with the 82nd Airborne's 4th Brigade Combat Team from Ft. Bragg, N.C. He said the photos point to a breakdown in leadership and discipline that he believed compromised the safety of the troops.
He expressed the hope that publication would help ensure that alleged security shortcomings at two U.S. bases in Afghanistan in 2010 were not repeated. The brigade, under new command but with some of the same paratroopers who served in 2010, began another tour in Afghanistan in February.

The couple of pictures that I saw didn't look like they were posing with the dead bodies, so much as someone just snapped the pics while soldiers were near the body. The person taking the pictures could be trying to stir some shit.

We had this discussion on the ride into work this morning. Most of the dumb shit soldiers get caught doing is because someone thought it would be cool to take a picture.
If they left the camera in their pocket...they'd never get caught.

Well I'm lazy. With all that stuff I see them packing around, I'd be trying to lighten my load....camera would be one of the first things to go.

Sounds to me more like someone wants to piss on our troops more than take care of any disciplinary issues. Yeah, it's stupid, but hate to say it, it's nothing that hasn't happened in virtually every army in wars previous going back, oh, ****ing forever. Stand by for the religion of perpetual outrage to riot again.

True that. My Granddad had some not so flattering pics from Italy. It doesn't make it right, it just shouldn't make it news.

I agree, but the idiots in charge lack the will to wage this war the way I think it should be waged. Our troops die due to the ridiculous ROEs that they placed upon them.

There was some ex-military guy on Fox News earlier who ripped Obama and everyone else up one side and down the other for throwing these guys under the bus. Everyone in the administration has outright condemned this without one shred of understanding what ten years of war has done to the troops.

Gee Mr. Mannn, seems like many people forget what WAR was, is ,and always has been around the world.
The get all upset over trophies of a hunt and kill of humans while they have stuffed heads of wild life they killed and took a head from and placed it in their den or living room.
Warriors take trophies from a kill be it bear claws, human ears, scalps or full skulls. In our wars our men bring back all kinds of stuff they find on the dead they killed, weapons, knives medals and dog tags.
Don't get me started on the trophies some African tribes get and wear about their neck all shriveled up. Head hunters in some places, nice Trophies, on to serial Killers that collect underware from the woman they kill.
To Piss on a dead enemy is nothing but to show disdain for them, to collect body parts is another thing, understandable in a fight to the death.
We Americans have not seen war full out ever, our wars have been centered in small areas, even Sherman march to Atlanta cannot compare to any of most wars in the past.--Slash and burn.
This is NOT a gentlemans war of slapping each other with a white glove. War is all out brutality and anger at those trying to kill you. I have no problem with pictures of the enemy being humiliated in death---if such a thing exists.
Pictures of the killers in prison being maltreated ---no problem, so pile the killers up necked and take pictures, when these people try to kill you and are taken alive, bringing in dogs, pigs or a shit load of non poisons snakes to terrorise them is no problem, better they spill their guts about future killings of our people.
WAR, were Hubby to come home with a necklass of 50 shriveled up things on it and tell me this was his trophy from the people that tried to kill him, no problem I would have it framed as a testament to the kids that their dad was a REAL warrior.
Crazy perhaps but no crazier then others in the world have been or are so.
