Title: My rack
Post by: Gina on April 18, 2012, 08:33:52 AM
Hey you menz!

I need your help!  I want a luggage rack on top of my 09 Dodge Grand Caravan.  Is this something cheap to do?  Hubby said it would entail taking out the inside interior roofing and drilling holes.

Where would I get something like that done and how much do you think it would cost?  What would you do?

Don't know why you want one specifically...If you're looking for something to attach one of those clamshell car carrier things to, they make them for cars without racks as well.

I'm sure, though, if you get one for the van, you'll have an amazing rack...

Well, it used to be real easy to add a rack back when they made cars and trucks with a "drip cap". That was a gutter that ran around the top of the vehecil. You could just clip onto it and go. I still have a set of bars that I used to clamp onto a 79/84 olds and then later my pickups to haul canoes....also had a luggage rack(box) that did the same for camping gear....oh, the good old days before the government got their fingers into everything.

You could redneck it.... just drill the holes in the top, poke hole thru the headliner,  stick the bolts with a "body washer" on it up from the inside, smear some silly-cone caulking around it, put on another "body washer", add the rack and then put the nut on the outside.....or just Red Green it on with duct tape.

Do you have roof rails on it? If so, you can attach it to that.

Some of those roof rails aye there just for looks or very, very light loads.

I wouldn't trust them much with my kayaks.

no, it's just plain on top.  I have looked at some other's in the parking lot and they have the black lining like I do but the rack is bolted about an inch inside the lining.

Then you will probably have to have it installed. I would take it to a dealership and let them do it.

Some of them are pretty cheesy, but others aren't. A roof rail is how a relative of mine mounts theirs.

I would too.  99% of those headliners are thin cardboard and are easy to damage.  I had to remove part of the headliner in my Toyota to replace the antenna.  I went to the junkyard and practiced on their cars first so I wouldn't mess mine up, but it's not really a DIY job.  You usually have to remove trim pieces to get the headliner out and those are just as easy to break if you don't have the right tools.

Exactly, if the dealership breaks anything, they are responsible for fixing it. Plus with them installing it, there should be a warranty with it.

Hi Gina,
You may want to check out Yakima http://www.yakima.com/ or Thule http://www.thule.com/en/Global

Both are great products but not cheap. I went with the Thule for my wifes car, very happy with the product.

I would not hesitate to put my dogs in their crates with these racks, but then, have you ever met a dog that didnt like to have their nose in the wind?

I once had a 91 Plymouth Acclaim. I noticed other cars (Dodge, Chrysler, Plymouth of same design) with a luggage rack on the trunk. I went to the dealer and bought a factory trunk luggage rack. It wasn't as expensive as I had imagined. IF your hubby has reasonable mechanical skills, it's pretty easy to install. Layout & drill holes for the rivnuts. (They're like a pop-rivet, but with threads inside). It came with a template for where to drill the holes. Install the rivnuts. Install roof rack. They DO make special tools for the rivnuts, BUT, my kit came with alternate instructions on how to install them without buying the special tool. The biggest problem is to make sure that he doesn't drill through the headliner.  :o  After I got mine installed, one could have never told that I had added it on. However, I DO possess decent sheet metal working skills thanks to cross-training while I was USN.

no, the one's I called all said that it wasn't something they would do.  That the racks are factory installed

I prefer factory installed racks. Natural racks are the best.

My Honda Ridgeline has two channels into which the rack is installed. No cutting, no holes, no headliner to worry about.

I bought the Honda carrier for the Ridgeline, and it fit perfectly. As I recall, I removed 2 strips of plastic in the existing rails, replaced them with new Honda strips for the carrier, put the carrier into the channels, tightened the bolts, and I was done.

It took all of 15 minutes, and I didn't know what I was doing.

Carlos, I'll post some photos in about a month or so.

If I can do it, anyone can. The Ridgeline Owners Club was also very helpful.

I don't know if you've gotten this installed yet, but I think there may be a way to install the roof rack without removing the headliner.  I noticed that the local auto parts store sold an assortment of clips, snaps, and covers.  If you can drill a small hole through the headliner to mount the rack from inside the car, you could cover the hole in the headliner with a snap-in plastic cover that is the same color.  It would be self-locking and look similar to this.

I've used vinyl spray paint to recolor plastic pieces and it works great.

I would buy the hole covers before you have people start drilling stuff.  I found them in the fastener section at AutoZone Advanced Auto.  Don't worry about the color.
