Florida special prosecutor Angela Corey plans to announce as early as Wednesday afternoon that she is charging neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman in the shooting of Trayvon Martin, according to a law enforcement official close to the investigation.
It was not immediately clear what charge Zimmerman will face.
Martin, 17 and unarmed, was shot and killed Feb. 26 by Zimmerman, who said he was acting in self-defense. Police in Sanford, Fla., where the shooting took place, did not charge Zimmerman, citing the state’s “stand your ground†law.
Corey told reporters Tuesday night that she would hold a news conference about the case within 72 hours. A news release from her office said the event will be held in Sanford or Jacksonville, Fla.
Benjamin Crump, who is representing the Martin family, said this week that Corey’s office had asked where Trayvon’s parents would be each day this week. They arrived Wednesday in Washington for a civil rights conference organized by the Rev. Al Sharpton, where they are scheduled to speak.
The announcement of a charge against Zimmerman would come a day after Zimmerman’s attorneys withdrew from the case, citing their inability to contact Zimmerman.
Lawyers Craig Sonner and Hal Uhrig on Tuesday expressed concern about Zimmerman’s emotional and physical well-being, saying he has taken actions without consulting them. They also said they do not know where Zimmerman is.
“You can stop looking in Florida,†Uhrig told reporters. “Look much further away than that.â€
Corey said Monday that she would not bring the case before a grand jury, which was expected to convene this week. She said her decision to forgo the grand jury should not be viewed as a factor in determining whether charges will be filed.
Corey has indicated in recent weeks that she might not need a grand jury to bring charges against Zimmerman.
The lawyers said they stand by their assertions that Zimmerman acted in self-defense when he killed the 17-year-old, who was unarmed, but they acknowledged that they formed their impressions without meeting Zimmerman.

I lived through that rioting. My workplace was unreachable for a week due to fires. I understand wanting to avoid Al Sharpton and his thug army, but this is just heartbreaking. If it ends like the Duke case, the prosecutor should be sued. I would also like to see Al Sharpton sued and the Black Panthers.....

I'm hoping you're right, but I really doubt it. I think they intend either to:
a. Convict Zimmerman, regardless of the facts. (Remember the OJ jury)
b. Go after the Stand Your Ground law, and make the court case about gun laws.
Or both.

I read a CBS article that stated that officials new where Zimmerman is (not in Florida) and would be arresting him rather than allowing him to surrender himself.
If they don't place him in isolation prior to the trial, he won't live long enough to make it to trial.

I think they couldn't take the pressure from all the "kill Zimmermen" people and looked for any reason to drop him. They didn't have contact with him for a day and they dropped him, that excuse doesn't fly. Something else is going on. What a great PR move for the attorney's. Hire us and we will drop you at the first sign of trouble.

What pisses me off is Eric "My People" Holder can't wait to start his own investigation into this, yet not a peep about the illegal activities of the new black panties. I am willing to bet if Zimmerman doesn't get convicted Holder will bring him up on federal charges the same day.

George Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch volunteer who says he was acting in self-defense when he"fatally shot teenager Trayvon Martin in Sanford, Florida,has been charged with murder in the second degree, special prosecutor Angela Corey told reporters Wednesday.
Corey said that Zimmerman has surrendered to authorities in Florida and has been arrested.
[Updated at 6:12 p.m. ET] Corey said she wouldn't discuss what led her to file the second-degree murder charge, other than her conclusion is based on her review of the evidence.

Zimmerman also has a new attorney, Mark O'Mara, according to NeJame.
NeJame reported that Zimmerman, before he surrendered, was "out of the state of Florida, as I understand it, for his safety."

It sounded like she was campaigning just like Nifong was doing in the Duke lacrosse case. It also looked like she spent quite a bit of time in the makeup chair before the press conference.

The state attorney said that the decision didn’t take a long time, despite it more than 40 days since the original crime was committted.
“It didn’t take long,†Corey said. “Remember, the prosecutor’s burden is proof beyond a reasonable doubt. We have numerous homicides where immediate arrests are not made. We have to have a reasonable certainty for conviction before we file charges.â€
Under Florida law, second degree murder is the unlawful killing of a person when perpetrated by any act imminently dangerous to another and evincing a depraved mind, regardless of human life, although without any premeditated design to effect the death of any particular individual. The maximum sentence for the crime is life in prison.
Corey said the decision to charge Zimmerman was made last week. She said Seminole County officials have worked with her office to set up the courts for coming hearings.

I hope his attorney can make the case that there's no way in hell the man can get a fair trial due to media and political interventions. I wouldn't have blamed him in the least if he'd left the country.
I didn't live through Rodney King, but I lived in Durham during Duke Lacrosse. They were tried and sentenced in the media, by Duke faculty and by locals with guilt or an axe to grind at every turn. I had to listen to my in-laws discussing poor Crystal at every family function. Funny how they shut up after the truth emerged.
Plus, I notice Martin's mother thanking The Lord and Jesus for Zimmerman's arrest. Have the DUmmies censured her for that yet as they do those who thank God after surviving natural disasters?

Angela Cory may have charged him with a crime which she knows he can't be convicted. I was expecting manslaughter and the 2nd degree murder threw me for a loop. After I thought about it, a jury might be convinced to convict on manslaughter just to keep the peace but I don't think they will be able to seat a jury that will convict for murder. They either clear him or you have a hung jury. Either way Cory is off the hook.

Sounds to me like they didn't want to get dragged into the political arena that this case has turned into, but I don't know that this would be cause for disbarment.
I'm not a lawyer, but I don't see how dropping a client would lead to disbarment proceedings in this case.

As I understand it, in cases like this, it must be with a judges approval for counsel to be reassigned.

He hadn't even been charged with any crime when his 1st lawyers dropped him. I don't see why a judge's permission would be required in such a case. At the time they were not acting as his criminal defense lawyers.
At least that is my understanding.
