Title: Thomas Kinkade, one of nation's most popular painters, dies suddenly
Post by: mrclose on April 06, 2012, 10:58:20 PM
Mods

I don't normally post these kinds of topics and I am only 'guessing' that I have posted to the proper forum?

Please move if there is a more appropriate place.

I own a few of his originals and even though many, many so called 'experts' derided the guy's work .. to me it was top class!

Thomas Kinkade, the "Painter of Light" and one of most popular artists in America, died suddenly Friday at his Los Gatos home.

He was 54. His family said in a statement that his death appeared to be from natural causes.

"Thom provided a wonderful life for his family,'' his wife, Nanette, said in a statement. "We are shocked and saddened by his death.''

His paintings are hanging in an estimated 1 of every 20 homes in the United States. Fans cite the warm, familiar feeling of his mass-produced works of art, while it has become fashionable for art critics to dismiss his pieces as tacky.

In any event, his prints of idyllic cottages and bucolic garden gates helped establish a brand -- famed for their painted high lights -- not commonly seen in the art world.

Mrs. E is one of those who considers his stuff as tacky.

I think his stuff is okay, but I wouldn't pay huge sums for it. What he did with light was pretty cool, I thought.

RIP, Thom.

My better half purchased one of his paintings a few years back from Karendelac (ebay name) a personally signed P/P edition (#7 out of 95).

She paid $500.00 with frame and we were 'offered' $5,000.00 by a Kinkade collector just last year.

Better half offered 'me' instead! :whistling:

Aw.  That's sad.  I read a little about Mr. Kinkade and he sounded like a nice fellow.  My sympathies to his wife, family and friends.

I liked his art.  Got to go to a store in Greenville, SC once that sold it.  They encouraged you to play with the lighting in the rooms and I did.  His pictures were so pretty and how he did things with light was neat.

My wife, who has the painting and drawing ability in our marriage, didn't care for his stuff.  I rather like it.

Apparently, Kinkade had one drinkie-poo and one Diazepam too many:

Quote
Famed painter Thomas Kinkade died after consuming lethal amounts of  alcohol and prescription tranquilizers, the Santa Clara County medical examiner said Monday, citing results from his autopsy.

The official cause of Kinkade's April 6 death at his Northern California home was acute ethanol and Diazepam intoxication, the coroner said, noting Kinkade "died of respiratory depression as a result of a high concentration of ethanol combined with benzodiazepine use."

Kinkade, 54, was famous for his paintings that featured scenes in nature and breathtaking landscapes.
