Pot, beer lead to tragedy on father-son hunting trip
Advertisements [?]The word tragic doesn't begin to sum up what happened to 8-year-old Hunter Klaseus. It's not strong enough.
Hunter and his dad were turkey hunting. Tony Klaseus, 39, saw some turkeys and left his son behind and began stalking down the edge of a field.
At some point Hunter must have decided he wanted to be part of the hunt. According to the Minneapolis Star Tribune, Hunter, wearing camouflage, began moving toward his dad who was trying to get closer to the turkeys in a field.
Turkey hunters know seeing turkeys in a field, and almost in range, is when things get pretty intense. The elder Klaseus was wired.
"Then I heard something snap or break near me, and a large figure rose up," Tony Klaseus told authorities. "I thought it was a turkey, and I shot it and it went down. I thought I shot the turkey. Then my son jumped up screaming and then fell back down."
Hunter Klaseus never got back up.
The boy was 20 to 30 yards away when his dad shot him with a 12-gauge shotgun. Tony Klaseus called 911 on his cell phone and carried his son a quarter-mile to emergency workers.
Hunter was pronounced dead on the scene.
In a way the story gets worse.
It was reported Tony Klaseus had marijuana and alcohol in his system at the time of the accident. Authorities found two 12-packs of beer, three six-packs and an empty 24-pack at the scene. There was a marijuana pipe in the man's truck.
Tragic? Tony Klaseus was an accident waiting to happen.
For the time being forget that Klaseus broke the cardinal rule of hunting, which is identify your target. His blood alcohol level was .06 and he had pot in his system. Klaseus didn't just not follow the rules of hunting, he didn't follow the rules of being a dad.
When I first read the story I thought, "Who leaves an 8-year-old alone in the woods?" Now I get it.
A person who would leave an 8-year-old alone in the woods also would be drinking beer and smoking pot with an 8-year-old on a hunting trip.

Sad story and the father should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Alcohol and drugs don't mix with guns.

2. What a shame.
I have been on two hunts when kids got shot.
One was a squirrel hunt when a guy shot his son in the top of the head, a single BB entering each eye, blinding the kid.
Another was a 13-year-old who was climbing into a tree stand when a .270 went of, drilling his heart. We found him that evening and my StepFather carried him for over three miles back to camp and had to tell the kid's Dad.
But neither incident involved beer or reefer.
MR. Klaseus should be taken out and shot.
My word...tragedy and violence follow this man around like a dark specter. Lucky for us he is there to pull the sun back down to earth. On another note, I didn't think a day went by for the truth challenged one that didn't involve alcohol and marijuana.

We usually used #4's on sqrirrels.

Though, I totally do NOT believe TominTib. I'm sure that's a common opinion around here. I hunted for years and years and have never been in the woods when someone was shot. Does it happen? Of course. For it to happen to one person twice, and since this is TominTib we're talking about here, I call bullshit. Besides, a #6 shot going in each eye? He is apparently ignorant of the concept of shotgun spread. #6 is generally a pretty good size for squirrel and they don't hold a pattern that tight.

Rebel, if I recall, even with shot there is a "lace curtain" effect...I have seen blind in one eye yes...both eyes? Rarely.

I think it is plausible that someone could get blinded with a single pellet to each eye...a lot would depend on the gauge. My neighbor dropped a Grizzly with one shot from a 410 at about nine feet...dead right there. In case anyone calls BS...I have a link to the article in The Daily Interlake (Kalispell MT newspaper).

Hey, stranger. If anyone's game to go DUmp-diving again, didn't TiT have a lot to say about that Cheney hunting incident a while back? Like he had the inside track on who actually shot whom? Some broad, allegedly, and he made the claim more than once, saying he (TiT) "knew someone" in the hunting party.

That is why - in direct violation of Texas law - they waited so long to announce the incident. They had to get her out of the country.
They were drunk as skunks.
I heard this directly from a spouse of someone on the scene.

I have known this since right after the incident, but was sworn to secrecy.
To not post this right away was very difficult.
But lately I have felt like I should just say "screw it" and do it anyway.
So I hid it here for starters.

I was hit from behnd at about 35 yards by a blast from a 20 gauge with #6 shot.
I was wearing a denim jacket and the force flattened me.
I didn't know his stepfather was COO of Haliburton.

those out like candy to the heavy hitter clients, bankers, insurance guys, etc.
Granted, most were not the same grade as what Cheney was using- mostly in the $7K range.
You just would not believe. Whole sets of top of the line golf clubs, Rolexes, custom boots, I could go on and on.
Perazzis and Kreighoffs, mainly.
I've had some myself.

I have seen demonstrations where people that are wearing heavy duty body armor that are hit from a distance of less than three feet by a 308 and still remain standing. I sincerely doubt that a load of #6 fired from a 20 gauge will flatten someone at 35 yards unless he was stumbling drunk and tripped over something as the gun went off. I also find it curious that he didn't mention how many pellets penetrated his denim jacket...implication is none...but yet they knocked him flat.
