Do you have to know how to use a circular saw, a lathe (wood and/or machinist), handle your own home plumbing?

Yes, and pretty much any portable power tool. Some electrical knowledge is helpful, too.

Basic auto repair skills are also mandatory.  Oil/filter change, spark plugs, brakes (disc and drum), troubleshooting problems using senses of hearing, smell, feel.  Be one with the machine.
