Title: Forced Valet Parking
Post by: CactusCarlos on March 28, 2012, 02:08:18 PM
Went to lunch today at Katy Trail Ice House (http://katyicehouse.com/) (if anyone local to DFW cares).  It appears that only Valet Parking is available.  On our way out, I handed the valet the ticket and got into my car with the coworkers I brought - the valet looked hurt that I didn't give him a tip.  If I'm basically forced to use valet parking because no other parking is available, I don't feel I should have to tip.

What say you?

Find another restaurant.

I would have gave him a tip, just because I don't like to piss people off. I dont think you should have to because you didn't get the option to not use the valet.  There is a really expensive restaurant in Addison that my husband took me to one year for our anniversary, they had a forced valet too.

I think it will depend on if you're correct.  If it's forced valet then I would say it's up to the individual.  If you can park somewhere else on your own then .... well a tip may be warranted.

Did they wash the car or clean the windshield or vacuum the carpet?

What do they do if you show up on a motorcycle?

Okay I have got to find a way to work "chi chi poo poo" into a sentence asap!  :rotf:  :rotf:  :rotf:

Seriously, the food wasn't bad and the prices were reasonable - I'd go back.  Especially for that venison chili!

(Valet Boy still doesn't get a tip tho!)

It looks like a pretty normal restaurant & bar . . . wonder why the valet parking?  Is the parking lot far away from the actual restaurant or something?

It is pretty normal and the parking isn't far away at all.

You weren't forced to do anything, you chose to park there. I know there was other parking options available, you may have had to walk a little but other parking was available.

As for tipping The valet , that's another choice. No law says you have to tip anyone , I don't buy into the guilt tripping tipping.

Apparently you don't buy into understanding the point either.

Apparently not. Only parking lot in all of Dallas/Ft. Worth is evidently valet parking.

Got to cut me some slack it's been a couple weeks since I've been up there.  :whatever:

Ok.

I'll cut you some slack this time.  But only because you asked politely.

I'm a big tipper, and I always tip, and I tip Valet twice, coming in and going out when we go to the Casinos.

Venison chili is f'n awesome, but you can't brown the meat like beef. It'll burn. It's very lean.

Best unenforced Valet parking is at Hospitals, they hire old duffers that can drive a stick to a motor cycle. Tipping is not expected but when on Crutches or in a wheel chair a 5 note is slim pickings for the drivers that may have to walk a couple  hundred yards to find  your car.

Forced Valet service is great if you are on first time to a restaurant.   If you never go back, Oh well.

One pays for the convenience of pulling up to the door in a blinding blizzard or Tempercures with a wind chill factor of - 15 well worth the cost.

We tip allot of people in our lives, our hair cutters, waitresses and waiters, our paper boys and girls, I leave a 6 pack of beer for the garbage pick up on the holidays, they will take stuff they should not do.

Forced Valet means the establishment is now responsible for your $35-60,000 dollar investment.  Leave it parked on the street, can mean a big head ache a couple hours later.

Pay $10.00 pH to park in a  lot and have to walk to where you wish to be is nuts when the sign says they have no responsibility for your car.   Same may be said for forced Valet service but at least one has the receipt to turn into insurance company when damage is done.

We are a country of tippers,  In New Hampshire for breakfast we tip and  pay the tax amount  when it is a slow day, lunch is a double unless very busy, and we triple the tax for supper at a very busy place.

No frigging big deal, when one can afford to dine at an expensive Restaurant one has to allow for big tips so if you like the place and go back once a month or twice they will remember you and give you great service.    This is why we dine out , food is good but the service can bring back customers.

Face it my friends we dine out not so much for the food, we want to walk in sit down and be waited on.   No work preparing a meal, no dishes to wash, just the feeling of being welcome and waited on hand and foot.    Nice to be brought to the front of the line and be called by name, sat at your favorite table, know the staff and they know you.

Having Valet service just adds to the experience and tipping is no more trouble then tipping the inside staff.  add this all into the cost of a meal out and have your auto returned in good shape is great.

No difference then a road side diner, you go there often and tip well, you will get better service than going to a fast food chain and enjoy it more. And [ better food then the in and out tourests ].
