Title: U.S. troops ordered to disarm before speech
Post by: Gina on March 14, 2012, 11:22:35 AM
Quote
In a sign of the nervousness surrounding Mr. Panetta’s trip, the Marines and other troops who were waiting in a tent for the defense secretary to speak were abruptly asked by their commander to get up, place their weapons — M-16 and M-4 automatic rifles and 9-mm pistols — outside the tent and then return unarmed. The commander, Sgt. Maj. Brandon Hall, told reporters he was acting on orders from superiors.

“All I know is, I was told to get the weapons out,” he said. Asked why, he replied, “Somebody got itchy, that’s all I’ve got to say. Somebody got itchy; we just adjust.”

Normally, American forces in Afghanistan keep their weapons with them when the defense secretary visits and speaks to them. The Afghans in the tent waiting for Mr. Panetta were not armed to begin with, as is typical.

Panetta's a ***** - a classic bureaucrat who bounces from one government job to another.

He's clearly out of his depth as SecDef, and this is a classic illustration of just how poor his judgment is.

What is panetta afraid of?  That he might get fragged?

If he was afraid of that . . . what does that tell you about the perception of the military in the Obama Administration?

For openers that it is pretty piss poor at keeping secrets about who lands where when.  (Penetta's Visit )

KABUL — An Afghan drove a stolen vehicle on to a runway ramp at a military base in southern Afghanistan and then ran from it ablaze as a plane carrying Defense Secretary Leon E. Panetta landed there on Wednesday morning, Pentagon officials said.

Well, at least there'll be ONE Clintonista who can accurately make a claim of landing at an airport and dodging sniper fire.

I wonder if the troops cocked their fingers pointed and yelled "Bang" as the Flamin Afghani drove across the tarmac? :fuelfire:

Also, did little Leon need a change of skids when he was informed ??

So, a disgruntled Afghani tries to pull some kind of stunt while the SECDEF is landing and he orders the Marines to ground arms?

Doesn't seem too terribly bright, this Panetta guy...

I wonder...were the US troups given an option not to attend  the Panetta gathering?

When leaders are afraid of those whom they lead then they are not leaders; they are cowards.

Am I dreaming, or didn't Panetta get attacked by a muslim homicide truck bomber on his last visit ? Does he think that our troops are a threat to him ? Does he not see having troops he is reviewing being armed would be a more beneficial to him ? I must be missing something big here.

HOW ****ING INSULTING!

Standard procedure. We had to leave our weapons when we went to see Dick Chaney in 2005.

yeah, but he was the veep. Panetta, ****stick that he is, is just SecDef. Blowing him away (not that I advocate that) would not require implementation of the 25th Amendment to COTUS.

Cheney is how I seem to remember it being spelled. As a courtesy, and a sign of respect to office holders I like to properly spell their names. There is one exception I can think of.

Consistency as a product of intellectual honesty and personal integrity is what separates conservatives from DUmmies.

Before they appointed Panetta, I heard the most of the top brass was already squirmy about a CIA guy coming in a running things. Apparently he also ruffled some feathers before his transfer.
