So what does everyone think of the Industrial Workers of the World?

I like 'em!

To me they represent the reasonable mix of Anarchist and Socialist principles.

One big union...

Workers of the World Unite!!

7. You are playing right into the capitalist's hands.

The ruling class is not divided by nations, why should the working class? The struggle against capital is international.

9. Hear! Hear!..........

And we'll NEVER defeat international capitalism by division into individual countries. It's all of us or none of us. That's actually TRUER today than it was a century ago and it was VERY true then.

12. Well

I am not in a struggle. I just want the people of the USA to do well. We are way topheavy at the moment. You may be playing in to the Communists hands my friend. Give the USA a chance. I have been around the 3rd world. It sucks. I do not want to go there.

14. I've given the USA a chance.

It's capitalist system is failing and it doesn't look like Keynesianism can save it this time.

31. What's wrong with communists?

I'm not talking about Soviet style totalitarian regime communism, which is what I think you have in mind, but the kind that is practiced in monasteries and kibbutz. I don't want a nation to be communist but communist institutions within that nation like employee owned cooperatives are helpful to the workers and for workers to do this they must organize into unions.

I'm a worker, not of the world, but in the United States of America.  I do my job and go home.  I get a paycheck, but I don't think I should have much control over the company.  If I get dissatisfied, I'll look for a job elsewhere.  One thing I will not do is unite.  You socialist and communist bastards can just kiss my ass.

11. It's nearly impossible

to get 25 people in any random shop to even give the time of day to a Union organizer, much less take the necessary steps to form one.

Yet you guys wanna unite the entire planet?

Utterly ridiculous.

24. Fair enough

However, when 50% or so of the populace HATE Unions, and another 25% have favorable impression (with the remaining 25% indifferent) but believe they're nothing but a relic of a bygone era--you're going to have extraordinary problems even attempting to organize.

I'm a product of a strong union family. I'm very supportive of organized labor. If it weren't for my Father's Union I wouldn't be where I'm at today. His union (which he was President of the local) put food on the table and my brothers and I through college. I'm forever indebted to the union movement.

At some point, however, we have to deal in reality. The Socialists and Communists have, in small part co-opted the movement (as a few posters on this thread gleefully attest).

That's a reason so many individuals are so reluctant to associate with anything relating to or involving unions. Purge the Communist agitators and radicals and we'd have a much, MUCH easier time organizing.

It simply cannot (nor should it, imo) as a movement primarily be driven by the Socialist and Communist element. Many, many Union members of the past were veterans and ardent supporters of the United States and to a significant degree out Capitalist system. Some weren't--of course--but the vast majority were.

Somehow, some way that was lost, and it's partially (although not even close to entirely) to blame for the vast reduction in overall membership, strength and collective bargaining power.

You see, DUmmies, a great deal of people do indeed find something wrong with Communism.

Mind you, these are the same people who are always bitching about the outsourcing of American jobs.
