Talking points: What to tell people who say "Obamacare forces us to buy health insurance"

Last edited Thu Mar 1, 2012, 10:19 PM USA/ET - Edit history (1)

The Affordable Care Act does not force anyone to buy anything. There are no criminal penalties for not having health insurance.

The act does, however, create a tax that people without health insurance would pay if their income is above a certain level. The idea is that, because we all agree that such people should not simply be denied care, they should compensate society for the risk they are unloading onto the rest of us. But, heck, the law does not even create criminal penalties for refusing to pay the tax.

One can argue the wisdom of the law and the way it was written. But never before has anyone questioned the Congress' ability to levy a tax. Only a supreme act of judicial activism would find that, in this case alone, the taxing power of Congress is null and void.

And, oh, btw.. do you know where the idea of the "individual mandate" came from? It's an old Republican idea hatched by the Heritage Foundation. So, if it's a "socialist idea," then those are the socialists who are to blame for it.

I could have sworn that 0bama rejected the notion that this is a tax. They really need to make up their minds on this.

1. How about "so what? you have to buy car insurance too"

...and the insurance isn't to help YOU. It's to help other people, and to keep them from paying for you.

If you're willing to set enough cash aside that you could pay medical bills for the rest of your life if you are paralyzed from the neck down tomorrow, then I'll let you off the hook for insurance. But otherwise, you're going to expect someone other than yourself to pay for the medical care, right?

 :mental:

Suck it DUmmies it is a mandate no matter what cute terms you want to dream up, at the end of the day the government is forcing people to buy something.

When is Obama going to force auto insurance companies to cover the cost of gas and everything else?

Lucky the Dog says,

The act does, however, create a tax that people without health insurance would pay if their income is above a certain level.

You and your ilk may call it a "tax", but mandatory punitive payment for failure to comply with the provision of a statute is more accurately called a "fine".

Calling a turd a Snickers bar doesn't make it chocolately good.

You don't have to have car insurance unless you have a car, DUmmie.   :mental:

Wait until he makes all those bus- and subway-riding big city liberals who don't own cars buy policies to cover uninsured and unlicensed drivers in other states.

Nah, they still won't get it.  Morons.

First of all, it's not up to you as to whether someone is off the hook or not.  It's never up to those like you.

Second, if the person doesn't have insurance and is paralyzed, the only one's suggesting that others might have to forceably pay anything to take care of them is you and those like you.

If you bring that up i an argument the Liberal will either call you mean or a racist and then walk away yelling at you.

Studies prove that people of religious faith are happier and healthier.

So from now on everyone must go to Church as part of the ACA's costing curve bending strategy.

You aren't forced to go to church but there will be a tax on those that refuse to do so.

If you refuse to pay the tax you will not be punished for failing to go to church, only for evading taxes.

Wonder what they say when someone asks about the 3.8% SALES TAX when selling one's house (starting in 2013) that's also included in the multi-hundred page Obamacare Bill.

That's $3800 per $100,000.

A TAX...in that bill that has "no taxes included".

I did not know that. This should help the housing market bounce back.

0bama Hell Care was not about health care it was about taxes and government control over private lives.

Yeah, it used to be that if you sold your primary residency at age 55 or over and made a $100 thousand or less in "PROFIT", there was no taxes on the profit...can't have you pee-on's making money and uncle SAM not getting his fair share.

Geez these DUmbasses have short memories! Wasn't it Pelosi who admitted if you didn't pay the fine, and that is exactly how it is defined in this travesty of a healthcare bill, you can go to jail! What happens if you neglect to pay a traffic ticket, asshole? Since you and your complete denial of reality, want to compare it to car insurance.

All this is BS anyway! Show me in the Constitution where the Federal government can force me to buy a damn thing! If you weren't a DUmbass, you'd also figure out it's the state who requires you to have liability insurance. And, DUmber than a rock, if you don't have comprehensive, which tons of people can't afford, who pays to fix your car?

Once again, you prove who you are!

Besides, why in the hell do I need to pay for birth control for women who are never goin' to get laid anyway?! Looks to me like they have their own BC under their armpits!

So, the penalty is a tax again ?

Here is the thing, DUmbasses -

It can't be a tax-

Taxes are applied based on income or value (more or less)
Never has anyone been taxed for NOT buying something from a private company.

When one needs to pay a fee for refusing to comply, its a fine.

You are confusing capital gains with this new thing in the health care bill.

You no longer have to pay any capital gains on your primary residence if you lived in it 2 of the last 5 years. It's been that way for several years. (it was that way when I sold my house in 2006)

The new thing is a SALES TAX of 3.8% that is to be placed on the SALES PRICE of the house.

That means if you sell your house for $250,000, you pay $9500 to the government - out of your profits IF you have any. If you can't pay the sales tax, you won't be able to sell your house.  :censored:

Unless you meant that statement with a great deal of sarcasm, I don't see how it will help the housing market bounce back. Too many people can't sell their homes for what they owe on them, let alone having to pay 3.8% to the government for the priviledge of selling their home.

Thanks to Obamacare our portion of health insurance has gone up from $684 a month to $747 a month.  This is just our portion not the total cost.  Dental also went up. My husband works for a start up company, how is Obamacare going to help us or my husband's company DUmmies?  You are not living in reality.

Not sure if compliment, or admonishment. Leaning away from compliment. Hopefully I have contributed something, or have caused constructive results. Hopefully quality over quantity. Not perfect, but trying to improve consistently.

Well then, what about Heywood J. yablowme ?

I have a buddy that was a CH-46 crew chief with HMX-1.  Occasionally, when he was doing VIP (senators and their guests to Camp David and such) pick-ups, he would switch out the name patch on his flight suit so that it said SSgt Hugh G. Rection.

He told me that he actually got quite a bit of action from the guests and a lot of blank looks from the VIPs.
