This would be much more common with the FEDEX drivers we have around here.

What a terrible thing to occur. (http://www.miamiherald.com/2012/02/28/2665233/fedex-truck-hits-ny-amish-buggy.html#storylink=cpy)

This is my neck of the woods.  I'm a little surpised it made national news.  This happens now and then, it is terrible, but it happens.  Steel barrelling down the road, vs. a wooden buggy, both sharing the same road.  We get upset when dusk arrives, and the Amish are just heading home through our village.  (They use no headlights, just that reflective triangle).  There was also an Amish house fire yesterday.  They fight the state on installing smoke detectors.  Everybody got out OK.

In these parts they generally at least hang a red light on the rear of the buggy after dark, some equip theirs with actual vehicle taillights.
