“This boys will be buoys attitude….â€
-------------------------------------------
This is a thread about the recent school shooting, not at all about young people becoming flotation devices.
It is actually an interesting campfire – some of the expected sycophants are there, as well as a couple of friends, one of whom states that he doesn’t want to be accused of swarming.
Suffice it to say her highness is not pleased with some of the responses, and her chief rival for 2012 DOTY has not appeared in her support. Yet.

2. Bullying has been a problem as well as the attitude
But we actually have more weapons available, even with all those nuts claiming guns will be grabbed.
So if you have them more available...the tool of choice will not be physically defending yourself, but something with range.
When I was growing up there were bullies, there also was none of this self esteem crap that they do now. There were also guns, and not one person that I knew of had them locked up, hidden yes, but not locked, however we knew that if any of us as much as looked at a gun wrong, much less touch one we would get our butts kicked.
I love the, boys will be buoys, remark. :lmao:

The Japanese monkey, Macaca fuscata, had been observed in the wild for a period of over 30 years.
In 1952, on the island of Koshima, scientists were providing monkeys with sweet potatoes dropped in the sand. The monkeys liked the taste of the raw sweet potatoes, but they found the dirt unpleasant.
An 18 month old female named Imo found she could solve the problem by washing the potatoes in a nearby stream. She taught this trick to her mother. Her playmates also learned this new way and they taught their mothers too.
This cultural innovation was gradually picked up by various monkeys before the eyes of the scientists.
Between 1952 and 1958 all the young monkeys learned to wash the sandy sweet potatoes to make them more palatable.

that bullying most likely played a role. Not who was the bully and who was the bullied.
And is bullying a problem per literature on the subject?
It is time we start taking it DAMN SERIOUSLY...
I don't expect it to be, but that is another matter.

And yet, you persist in speculation that serves no meaningful purpose right now, but fits a current agenda of yours.

Our annual school shooting.
So yes, I could talk of guns...I mean obvious tool, and it is part of the story.
But instead of gun, I am almost betting bullying played a role, as well as depression. In this case gun play is truly a symptom.
So here is the question, when will schools take this seriously? This boys will be buoys attitude is truly not working.
Oh goody, on edit...teen has troubled history both at school and at home!

Yes our schools are failing when it comes to preparing young skulls of mush for the real world.

Bullying seems to be the excuse for everything when someone finds it cool to take guns to their school and ace a few people out. This week I have to go to a trial for someone that thought the same way. He took a gun with him to settle a problem that the cops could have handled but chose to kill a man with 3 bullets to the head. There have always been bullies but it wasn't;t until more recent history when kids took guns as the answer to the problem. You can probably blame one or both parents for some of this. The fact is the kid pulled the trigger and shot several people without just cause and will go to jail for years.
Nads loves her some condescension when people point out that shes about as clueless as it comes. Many people get bullied in school I did myself. It's how you as a person deal with it that makes the difference. I chose to stand up and sometimes I didn't win but I stood up to the bullies. That kid in Ohio did the opposite of what the DUmpmonkies always say about being non violent and trying to understand your attacker. I understand that if someone wants to harm you it's best to defend yourself or your only going to keep getting your ass handed to you.

And yes, I have read this study, a fascinating one to say the least.
Many, many years ago I worked as part of a crew with two other guys. I'll call them Fred and Bob. Fred was a good guy. Bob was sort of like nadin. He pretty much claimed to know everything and talked all of the time. Fred's opinion was that Bob was lying all of the time because Bob was constantly talking and there just wasn't that much truth in the world.
One day we decided to put it to the test. While Bob was listening I told Fred that the day before I had seen a special on one of the educational channels that claimed they had discovered a new planet. Keep in mind that this was several years BEFORE any planets were found outside of our solar system. Fred pretended like the story intrigued him. As soon as Bob saw Fred's interest he claimed that he had seen the special also. Once Bob claimed he had seen the nonexistent special I knew that I had him hooked and decided to see how much fun I could have. I told him that I was only able to see the first 5 minutes of the special so I was curious about the details. For the next half-hour or so Bob regaled us with the story of a nonexistent TV special about a nonexistent planet.
For some reason nadin's claim of readying the fascinating monkey study reminded me of the above incident.

Nadin reminds me of a seafood restaurant where the restrooms were named "bouys" and "gulls."
Seriously, I think Freeper hit it. We'd get our butts kicked if we stepped out of line. The two-generation long culture of death has caught up with us. When the majority of births under thirty are to single mothers, we have a problem.
Shit. I'm starting to sound like Vesta. You know what I mean!

And how many of these kids who go nuts were also put on psychiatric meds at an early age?
My Cousin was the wildest kid I ever saw, he was a boy and he had tons of energy, this was back in the 60's and the Nun told my Aunt to take him to the Dr. to have him evaluated and possibly put on meds, my Aunt took him and the Dr. examined him, asked my Aunt where he went to school and she told him, he said and I quote "they want robots" in the classroom, and he said no way would he put him on meds.
I'd love to know what percentage of kids in school today are on meds?

This hits me that everyone is pushed around at one time or another in their lives. Why is it our kids today go to the extremes we never did.??
In our youth we had to either fight back or take it and hope it would go away in time.
Today's kids that are jacked up for lunch money, have to listen to insults and derision from class mates, go home and take out their frustration with the video games they play. 3 hours of shooting and killing the bad guys, gaining points in the game help.
The games lower the kids attitude on mayham and death, little by little the kids are becoming immune to blood and gore. Soon the game enemy's are replaced by in their own mind with the kids that are taunting them.
We Adults never had this outlet to go home and kill our enemy's except in our mind.
Kids today can go home and control their hate, so comes the time when things get just too hard for them they find a weapon and go after their tormentors as they have done for weeks or months in a video game. The boundary between the game and real life has been broken, No longer do they feel anykind of sympathy or compassion for the tormentors, they have ceased to be human for them, they are like the characters they kill over and over again on a video game.
We are raising a generation of kids that play for hours killing maiming and watching blood spatter with no feeling but accomplishment at winning a game. It is no wonder why kids after spending hours and hours destroying an enemy on a video game begin to think about destroying their real life enemy's.
It is no coincidence that all these school killings became epidemic at the time the violent video games came on the scene. Sure we had every few years a problem with the lone Wolfe's that carried out bad things. However this rise in kids that retaliate against the Bully's is new and if not the videos they play, then what, why.????
-
I know that bullying today is a little different. When I was picked on at school, I could get away from it when I went home. Not so for kids today...the picking continues on Facebook and other social media. That may be why reactions are so much different today. Home is no longer a "safe haven" for kids (unless they stay away from the internet).

86. Of course, i am all but surprised
And your point? Columbines wasn't about bullying, until it was.
Ths is part of the pattern.
If bullying was part of it, well then it woud weaken the case...
Why I hope the defense uses it.
From the outside looking in, of course it can be about both. In fact, I expect to be about more than either
But I get it, the world is not about manichean choices and includes more than one explanation. Humans are complex critters.
But if this helps to explain this tragedy to you, be my guest.
And I said in the op and in in the thread that it was part of it, not the woe explanation, and tat it is high time we, as a society, start that conversation. I see this is scary...I get it...but it is time we do.
-
Which is it Nads? Bullying or not? Columbine happened because they killers were part of the "Trench coat Mafia" and were outcast. They took their revenge out on thier clasmates because they didn't like how they were treated. For a historian you have absolutly no clue of what has happened within the past five minutes let alone the past five hundred years.
