Title: Fuel Savings?
Post by: CG6468 on February 24, 2012, 10:58:54 AM
Aside from this year's vacation (~7000 miles) and store/health/volunteer/family functions, we can't think of any additional cutbacks we can make to our driving habits. We just said "screw it" for our vacation; the prices will probably be a lot higher next year, or even if we wait until later this year, so we are going.

Hell, we aren't doing any less driving than we've done for the last 20 years or so. What cutbacks have you made regarding driving?

Emptied the trunk.

I'm taking out the rear seat next. :-)

Our health insurance doesn't cover that!  :p

Scoobie and I are starting to carpool.  I figure every day we carpool saves us just over $20 in gas and tolls.

On weekends we take my BF's truck, instead of his or my car.  He has a VW diesel pickup.  He also uses it as his daily driver.  My company offers subsidized rail and bus passes, and I have definitely looked at it, but we have had a spike in crime (shootings and pushing people on the tracks :whatever:) so at this moment that isn't all that viable of an option for me.   Additionally, it would increase my commute by about 45 minutes one way.  I get 29-32 in the city, so I can't complain that much.

I can't remember the last time I ventured more than 10 miles away from the ranch and "Toots" works 3 miles away, so we don't worry too much about it. I think our Grand Cherokee gets around 22 MPG so it's not really effecting us yet. I don't drive the truck as much, but I been usin' farm diesel in it for a coupla years anyway, as most of it's operation is on the ranch, so all I can hope is we shit can this prick in the White House and things can't do anything but get better for us.

We just cancelled our mini-vacation to Phoenix.  We can't afford to drive five hours to see some family and take Carleigh to the zoo.  How pathetic.

Anyway, the only change we do is make sure we get all of our errands done in one trip.

...make sure we get all of our errands done in one trip.

Been doin' that for years. Plus using overdrive and cruise control on my '89 (14mpg) Bronco........

Saddle bags and a milk crate on the Harley for store runs.

A few years back, we bought 2 small cars that get good gas mileage, and parked the minivan for use only when we haul a bunch of people or stuff.  It's made our gas bill survivable.  (We live between our places of work, I go 40 miles south and hubby goes 40 miles north.  Sure wish we could find jobs in the same town, but ain't gonna happen...)

I walk where ever I can and I carpool with other people when possible.  Right now, one tank of gas lasts me about three weeks, but I'm fortunate to live close enough to my school to walk.

This too.

We have a Walmart & Sam's Club right next to us.  We just put Carleigh in the wagon and head over to whatever store we need to go to.  If we are buying a lot of stuff, we take a car for the trunk space.  If we're just getting some water and small food items, then we walk.

You aren't wearing five coats and mumbling about a pie shop when you do this, are you?  :-)

:rotf:

No, but since we are usually on our way to Walmart, we would look normal.
