OUCH! The DUmmies don't like this one little bit. Pretty big bonfire;
usnret88
I can recall living in a house with only one fireplace, and no other
source of heat. No one - not government, not the upper income folks, no one but us chopped the wood for the fireplace.
We didn't have a car, so my step father hitch-hiked or rode a bicycle to work, a bicycle that had only one gear rather than the nifty 21 speeds that make it easier.
We survived. We thought we were happy. We grew up. As a teenager I helped him do plumbing jobs, moved furniture, and my parents bought a house and even paid for it with the labor that the two of them could do.
If a plane crashes almost anywhere in the world, or if there is a automobile wreck in the neighboring county people EXPECT the government to provide grief counselors. That is what parents are for, and aunts, and uncles and grandparents.
And now, people are EXPECTING subsidized child care, subsidized housing, subsidized food, income credit for income they didn't earn so that they get a portion of the taxes that I and others like me must pay.
In addition to this, there is a proposal to buy them gas. My wife and I stopped having children after the second one, because we believed we could not afford more. There are many who should not have any, based on their income levels and expectations of income increases.
When will it end, or where?

-snip-
U.S. Sen. Jay Rockefeller has proposed legislation that would provide low-income families with a monthly stipend of $100 to $165 to offset soaring gasoline costs.
Rockefeller's bill would mirror the eligibility requirements for the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program, which helped 79,493 West Virginia households last year with home heating costs.
According to the West Virginia Democrat's plan, recipients would have to show that they drive 30 miles a day, or 150 miles a week, for work, education or health care. Recipients also would have to fall between 110 percent to 150 percent of the federal poverty level. In West Virginia, that means a family of four could receive the gasoline stipend only if the household income was less than $26,845. For an individual, the cutoff point would be $13,273.
-snip-
The revenue could be offset through a windfall profits tax or a rollback of the tax cuts on the top 1 percent wage earners, Rockefeller said.

Some of those folks seem just a little ... uhhhh insensed! LOL

Wow...they were poor and expected someone to help them cut wood?
Imagine that.
A fireplace wastes alot of wood...too bad they did not have a woodburning stove. What a waste of trees. :-)

usnret88 is working on a headstone. They are pounding it pretty hard .... wonder if it will weather the storm or if it will be moved on? The saga continues.....

18. usnret88? Retired Navy?
Pretty decent health plan, don't we all deserve one like that?
Ever use a public school? Public library? Public highway? All those tax dollars - where will it end?
When I was in the service, we had subsidized shopping, subsidized gasoline, subsidized mess halls, subsidized health club, subsidized recreational facilities, subsidized housing, all those tax dollars - where will it end?
I guess it would be nice to spread the benefits to all, not just a few. Sen Rockefeller is basically doing what he's paid to do - pry money out of DC and push it to his home state.
Some of us, if we cut down trees to heat the house, we'd be arrested for destroying city property, or the neighbors would miss their trees before one winter was done.
No, DUmb ass, we don't all deserve a health plan like that. You put your time in service and EARN a health plan like that.
Again, No, DUmb ass, you don't pry the money out of DC ... that is not where the money comes from. It comes from ALL of us and the sooner you and those of your ilk learn that the better off the nation will be!

DUmmies are constantly playing Whack-The-Gopher, the old arcade game where the gopher pops up and you are suppose to knock it back in its hole with a mallet. In the DUmmie version, the gopher is "personal responsibility", "logic", "liberty", "truth", etc.
In the arcade it's just a game and pleasant diversion. In DUmmieland it is a mandatory way of life and a full time occupation.

And they just keep adding gophers! Now they are beating on a retired service man ...not that that is unique but it continues to 'pop' up;

24. Yes, I am retired Navy. I also worked from three days following
retirement until two years ago, and am interviewing for a job next week.
It's amazing how one can save one's dollars if prudent, even in the military.

And you still get benefits--time to give them up
or else you are being hypocritical. I am sick and tired of paying for your retirement and health care, time for you to be self-sufficient for a change!111!!!!!11
Yes, it still gets bene's. Amazing how that works ... you puts in your time and you reap the benefits. Wonder how many of them realize that service members aren't paid what their counterparts in the civilian world get paid?!

78. Amazing how MY TAX DOLLARS provided you with housing,
and a career. And most likely a better pension than I will get.
Since you don't believe in people helping people, can I have my money back?

85. Now don't you see that can't be done. You provided the contract
I signed. I did what the contract called for. I enlisted when there was a draft, because I wanted to. The contract said I could retire after 20 years, but I waited an additional eight. There are still recruiters looking for people, why not go see one and you too can get a fine pension. Sometimes the housing you provided me really sucked - aircraft carriers are fun sometimes, but other times they are not. I don't mind helping people, I just don't like it when people EXPECT it.

It was a nice attempt by usnret88, but liberals want a nanny state to take care of them from cradle to grave. The concept of personal responsibility isn't even on their radar.

83. I am a socialist; I would gladly pay even more in taxes for universal health care, fully funded schools, free college for every kid, free internet nationwide, better libraries, you name it. That is the purpose of government and the reason we pay taxes - to take care of people.
Yea, that USSR thing worked out so well, didn’t it? :loser: :mental:

So we are going to subsidize poor families with gas rebates. VERY BAD IDEA. Let the market place work this out and let us DRILL FOR OIL IN THE USA!!!!

Fireplace ?
I remember when we got our first AC. It was one of those big square AC units.
It only cooled 1 room, and my Dad only turned it on during special occasions.
Me being a 10 year old kid growing up in the South Texas heat, every time he switched it on,
It was like being in Heaven.

proud2Blib... im not sure this country can manage any more money into education at this point.
in my state 52 percent of the state taxes go into education and we're still near the bottom of the country even with a massive amount of wealth here. but that's better than it was in the 90s, when 60 percent of the state taxes went into education.

I remember our first AC in south Georgia. It sure was nice.
I've been thinking about the whole heating cost thing though. Al Gore invented the internet. TiT has done...well...probably every thing else. Why don't Gore and TiT join together and use their combined creativity and greatness to create some sort of "free" heat?

Heating my home costs me more than cooling it down. Global warming makes my wallet happy. :)

my dad wouldnt turn the a/c on in our house until july. by then we'd all lost weight and the walls were sweating, but he wanted to wait 'til it gets good and hot' before adding to the electric bill.
being the evil capitolists that we are, now we like to keep it cool enough year round to hang meat.

Yeah they want everything for them but God help anyone that's served to provide them with the ability and the right to bitch about everything under the sun including the price of oil. It' s not like we didn't work holidays, birthdays.anniversaries and all that plus weeks or months away from families and now add getting your ass shot at in some 3rd world hell hole because their hero BJ Bill Clinton wouldn't do his job.

No, you are an idiotist. The reason we work hard all our lives is to earn our own way and to deserve whatever benefits we receive. I'll be damned if my retirement pension that I grew as the result of my 30+ years of work and contributions is going to send YOUR kids to college. I don't owe you anything. If the government says I have to now pay the usual cost of my health care plus another $15/month in order to get universal up and running for me and everyone, I can probably handle that. But don't tell me I have to pay more taxes to provide you with free internet or better libraries. Cope. Find other resources. Earn them. Or make do without.

Where do libs come up with this stuff? I scanned the constitution and I don't see where it says that the reason we pay federal taxes to to take care of the people. The reason we pay taxes is to fund the government who provides military protection for it citizens from hostile foriegn invaders, to provide some basic services and to regulate interactions between the states. Everything else is just so much fluff. The government isn't here to hold your hand when it's dark and tell you that there are no monsters lurking in the closet. That is you mom's job...

Yeah, I had a really hard time with that wording too. Where they ever got it in their heads that the gov't was here to provide for us I'll never know.
