KALAMAZOO, MI (CBSNewYork) – A Kalamazoo, Michigan man whose son, Eric, died in Iraq in 2005, was outraged when he heard that flags in New Jersey were being flown at half-staff for the death of Whitney Houston.
John Burri decided to burn the New Jersey state flag on his outdoor grill as a form of protest.
Burri said that he believes the lowering of flags should be reserved for those who have given their lives for their country.

While I agree with his sentiment, not sure I agree with the flag-burning. What do you think?

I think Gov. Christie was fine in his judgement to have the flags lowered half -mast. Whitney Houston was more than just a singer – she accomplished much more than just singing; she led the way for many female singers to go that extra mile and achieve fame; she never forgot her roots and Newark and NJ. She was form New Jersey and proud of it. Gov. Christie has risen very much in my eyes for the loving, kindness he showed for a fellow New Jerseyite who made an impact on the whole world and on the music community. I’m from NY and NJ is our neighbor – I would like to think that our Gov. would do the same for a New Yorker who never forgot their roots.

Ms. Houston also gave back her to home town and state. Regardless of her addictions, she always remembered her NJ roots. She was a native daughter of NJ . A native New Jersyite who became a celebrity in the performing arts. What is so wrong in recognizing her passing by lowering the state’s flag?

Yes it should. One person’s death should not be compared as greater or better. It’s hard for each family, period! She was from there and she made the state proud. Like her bodyguard said, they sacrifice their lives to perform and deliver to fans. Nobody said that his death was not significant. We are ALL Human Beings on this earth for a time, ONE LOVE. Respects…..

Yes indeed the flag should have been lowered. You can’t compare a military person to a star, just isn’t any comparison. Here in Canada if you burn a flag,yo’u get a big fine.

I think he's expressing his First Amendment right to free speech.
If it's not a crime to burn, stomp on, and otherwise desecrate the American flag, I don't know why it would be a crime to burn the NJ state flag on a backyard grill.
This man is outraged that the country is expressing its "grief" in the form of political, senseless, bullshit "fly the flag at half-staff" that by itself means nothing when it's done at the memory of a celebrity, I have the sense that he's equally incensed at that practice as he is how the country reacts to those who have gone in harm's way and have come home in a box -- or not at all.
He's pissed off at the entire country for putting up with this nonsense and he's taking it out on NJ. Christie actually has the temerity of defending his actions, calling Houston "a cultural icon." That's one of the problems we have in this country -- putting more and more value on "cultural icons" than the common man and woman who serve and give their all.

If those who burned old glory also burned a koran every time they burned a flag, I suppose I wouldn't oppose their flag burning. Chances of that, slim to none.

There's no indication in the story either way -- so I think we'd have to give him the benefit of the doubt and assume the flag was his to burn as he chose.

I am not a big fan of Miss Houston. According to the accounts I have read in diferent sources, she didn't write her own songs, and she didn't play an instrument. She led a fast life. She wasn't a very nice individual in person according to resources...
Now you realize a movie of her life story, is probably in the making as we speak...

I burn one (1) regulation "ol' Glory" 4'x6' flag every year. (Of course, that's also in accordance with the rules/regulations for proper disposal of one (1) regulation "ol' Glory" 4'x6' flag.) I wouldn't mind throwing one (1) Quran (aka: Book of Da Debbil) into the annual revel fire, if I weren't certain that throwing that damnable thing in with the flag could be construed as flag desecration, that is.
