I hate how people treat food workers like crap.
Basically, I just got back from a fast food place. The guys there work extremely hard. Some a-hole in front of me started throwing a manchild tantrum because he *gasp* had to repeat his order. The guy mumbled his order throughout - Dumbo could have been there and he would have said "What the **** is this guy saying?"
Said manchild thought he was a total bad ass. You could just tell. I just looked at him for a few seconds after he fussed like a colicky baby, and could only shake my head.
Treat the people doing stuff for you with respect. Sorry, just had to get that off my chest.

2. Many moons ago I worked fast food in high school in an affluent area. Most of my time was spent with people who were making exactly sure you remembered how much better they were than you (and I gave you this change and why can't you do that in your head you idiot!??).
So I'm nice to them, having had that experience and knowing full well how easily your food can be spit in, or worse.

5. NEVER, ever, ever be rude to the perso0n who serves you food!
You have got to be really stupid to piss off your food server! The piss you offed may very likley end up in your food. I've never worked in the food industry but I've got this really big thing about being treated with respect and I woulodn't hesitate.
You've got a problem with how I'm doing things? Don't agree with my opinion? Fine. Talk to me. I'll listen. But the minute you start getting in my face and not treating me with basic civility, I go straight for the throat.

15. I went out to eat with a woman once . . .
We went to a restaurant that she liked and had eaten at before. People all around us were getting their food, even people who came in after us. We must've sat there for 40 minutes, waiting. Come to find out, she didn't believe in tipping. I never went out to eat with her again. And what you say was sort of true with her, she is uneducated and rude to all service people.

23. Sisters. My sister used to wait tables when she was younger
So you think she would have some compassion for the people who bring you food. No, not at all, what she does is pull every trick that someone did to her when she waited tables. She asks for lemon in her water, states when she receives her food that it isn't what she ordered, makes substitutions and asks for separate checks. Then she tips 10%. One time, I padded my tip to make up for hers and she sneered at me and told me she was just better at math than I was.

24. I worked in the food industry in college from sandwich and pizza delivery to bartending at nice neighborhood restaurants, and I have never, ever known anyone who messed with a customer's food, no matter how obnoxious. All the restaurant people in town knew each other, and I have never heard a story about a customer's food being messed with, even during our late night after-hours BS sessions at the bar. It's just out of the question; something we never considered.
The restaurant industry put me and many others through college, and now that we have embarked on our permanent careers we have more respect for those who prepare and serve our food. Maybe the world would be a more civil place if everybody had to spend some time serving food to the public.

32. We had an asshat one night...
We had FOUR phone lines for carry out and delivery. On a heavy night it would go like "Pizza Pub, please hold, Pizza Pub, please hold, Pizza Pub, please hold, Pizza Pub, please hold, thanks for holding how may we help you?" ALL evening...
Well working my way down the line I get to Caller Number Four, and he's pissed, because I had him on hold for 3 minutes, and he's calling in on a $3 a minute mobile carphone (yes, this was long, long ago) Calls me everything but a Human, but I take his order and get it going. Told him it'd be 15 minutes. He's at the counter in 5, fuming and demanding the manager and my nuts in a cup.
Pie comes out of the oven, manager asks "Is that his?", grabs a handfull of cornmeal and sprinkles some on the top (we used cornmeal to keep the dough from sticking to everything. It's rather gritty and crunchy) takes it in the back, opens a new can of anchovies, drizzles some of the oil on the pie, bags it and sends it out.
Never saw the sumbitch again.

35. We get some real assholes at our thrift store.
The worst are the ones that take the price stickers off the more expensive merchandise and then tell the cashier that the price is missing, hoping to get it for a lot cheaper.

Funny, when I was working in the fast food industry in high school, it was usually DUmmies that would come in and try the cheapskate shit like eating most of a meal/pizza/whatever and claiming it was bad, being total dicks about their order, wanting specials that no longer existed, etc.
And yet despite it all, it wasn't so bad as long as the manager wasn't being a dick. Although we had one at a pizza place I worked who would take the phone, go into the reefer (cord still attached) and talk to her boyfriend for HOURS (literally) at a time. General manager didn't give a shit about her, but woe be unto you if he saw you slowing down at all. She didn't last too long after people started unplugging the phone when she was in the reefer. She'd come out all pissy, demanding to know who disconnected her, whereupon we'd say, "Well then, why don't you complain to XXX?"
Oh yeah--we were allowed to split a medium pizza between two people each shift. Another guy and I PILED so much shit on our pizza one night it took three times through the oven to get it all cooked. Neither of us finished more than a slice and a half.

I'm always nice to the servers, not because of what they can do to my food but just because that's how I am to everyone. Even you DUmmies, if I happen to run across one of you, I'd be nice as pie.

Is this person basically saying just be nice so the workers won't tamper with your food? I personally believe in being nice to anyone working and never thinking that I better be nice or else. I always say please and thank you not because I have to but because it's how I was taught.

H5 Ballygrl and BEG, mean people suck and just because someone is in a low-paying job is no reason to treat them like shit, in fact it's a reason to be extra-nice to them because they sure aren't getting rewarded in the paycheck for hard work.
I once had a college friend who became a writer, several published novels to his credit and some series writing of a few more under pseudonyms to boot. He passed away a good while ago, very smart and could be quite charming, but he always treated food service workers like unreliable parts of a vending machine. Whenever I was with him I'd make an extra effort to make up for his rudeness...and since he was a professional writer, it was me paying the tab anyway.
Mean people suck.

Yeah, the affluent area is where all the disrespect goes down because I don't recall video after video in the hood of mouthy black women coming in ready for a fight :whatever:
I tend to agree with the DUmmies, but I've seen a$$jacks in front of and behind the counter to be fair AND I'll part ways knowing some ridiculous premise is coming from those fruitloops over there about how we should handle this or who are the primary perpetrators of crappy behavior. Sometimes they start to get things right and then they throw it all away when they get into their class warfare bs. If they want to see the look down your nose, I'm privileged to it all mentality, I've said it before you are most like to find that at either extreme of the socioeconomic scale where either wealth has generated an entitlement attitude or assistance has. Probably what makes it more disgusting on the lower end of that scale is the fact that attitude comes not from some birthright to wealth generated from family or one's own efforts, but from the backs of other taxpayers forcibly made to support entitled trash.

Yep, that's basically it, but you and I don't think we are entitled to anything, but what we are paying for. I just expect friendly and reasonably quick and accurate service. I don't consider the waiter or waitress my personal whipping boy or girl for having a bad day. It's a shame people can't learn to control their emotions over other situations instead of redirecting them towards some service worker.
Hi 5 BEG,I'm the same way.

DING DING DING DING!!!! We have a winnah!
Shittiest tippers--professional types and people who don't have the money to eat there in the first place. Best tippers: former or current servers. I moonlighted as a bartender when I was stationed on Guam at Andy's Hut. Beers in the bar were 85 cents at the time. Most people would throw in the 15 cents unless it was day before payday or some weird day like that. One guy NEVER, EVER tipped. Guess how long it took to get him a beer when he ordered one?
For the record, even the shittiest service gets 15 percent from me. Most of the time in a restaurant I tip 20-25, and in a bar (especially if I've run a tab or I'm playing pool or video golf away from the immediate bar area) 30+ percent isn't at all unusual.

Yep, I lean towards the higher end, especially if we are going to be sitting about doing more talking then ordering so that the table is occupied, but not generating revenue for the wait staff. IMO, if you want to shoot the breeze, but don't plan to tip, then your time is better spent at a Panera or some other type of cafe where there is no table service so you aren't wasting the efforts and time of a server who might have patrons several minutes deep waiting to sit down and actually order something and in turn tip.
I'm silly like that though. I feel there is kind of an unspoken behavior for this type of situation. I know DUmmies don't believe in such antiquated things as traditional expectation or custom, but I happen to think those things often look out for the well-being and interests of ourselves and others and promote the kind of basic respect and civilized behavior they seem to want. DUmmies never seem to quite make the connection between basic values and expectations and how they help to encourage the kind of world we'd like to live in. :banghead:

Half of DU is too emotionally fragile to work fast food without having a nervous breakdown and filing for disability.
The other half are food snobs who think fast food should be outlawed.

I tip 20%. The one thing that will get me to reprimand my server is if they keep interrupting my table while we are eating. If I want you, I'll get your attention. Otherwise let me eat in peace! I still tip 20% even when the staff pisses me off. "Toots" used to bartend, so I know how rude customers can be. I was usually with her though, so there weren't many rude people runnin' around. I'd throw 'em out on their ass!

"Another guy and I PILED so much shit on our pizza one night it took three times through the oven to get it all cooked."
That sounds like supreme on steroids, and it sounds delicious.
As for tipping, I use a 10, 15, 20 scale starting with breakfast, lunch, dinner. I generally won't go less unless the service was horrendous. I also like rounding up to the nearest dollar just for tidiness sake.

Lack of basic civility to people was never a problem until the great social revolution of the 60s that taught disrespect and coddling.
Let`s see,now which side of the political spectrum did that come from?

We just double the amount (including tax). So it the meal comes to say $55 we give $11 tip. If service is really great we tip more. My lib friend always has a tip chart and she uses it every time we go out. Always on the amount less tax and NEVER 20%. I never asked her why.

I have always given a tip of some kind when I have eaten out at the kind of resturants where you do that. One of my girlfriends worked at a Pizza hut after getting out of the Army and I saw what bad customers had done before so i always remembered that the fast food owrkers need those tips. They are not working 15/hr jobs .

Yes, he owns a unicorn farm.

Okay, for a second I thought the DUmmie was talking about me.
We went to McDonald's this weekend (had gift cards to use) and I always order a two cheeseburger meal. My husband ordered my daughter's Happy Meal first, then he said "A two cheeseburger meal" and then whatever he got. When we got to the window to pick up our food, there were FOUR cheeseburgers in the bag. I got upset and asked why they gave me FOUR cheeseburgers. The employee said, "You wanted two cheeseburger meals." I said, "NO, I wanted *A* as in ONE, two cheeseburger meal." I was just pissy because I was hungry and also irritated that these idiots cannot understand basic freaking English.
Face it DUmmies, MOST (not all) fast food employees are f-ing morons.
EDIT TO ADD:
Most of our fast food employees (counter workers) do not speak English. So that's what really gets under my skin. Please learn the language if you don't want people getting upset when you screw up their order.

This is somthing I've never quite understood about the DUmmy world-view - it seems to be built on suspicion, fear, and negativity about their fellow-man.
Like you, I was raised to behave properly to everybody else. Always say please and thank you, smile &c.&c. - such things are part of the old-fashioned manners which they're generally so keen to trample on.
-
Jackson talks about himself at these meetings. Once he told of his days as a waiter at the Jack Tar Hotel in his home town of Greenville, S.C. Just before leaving the kitchen he would spit into the food of white patrons he hated and then smilingly serve it to them. He did this, he said, "because it gave me psychological gratification." It was something everybody in the audience understood.

I just started working at a Waffle House as a server. It's been 20 years since I've last been a waitress. It's the only work I can find right now, so I'm one of the grossly underemployed. I have noticed that alot of it is in the server's attitude. I've been the only server in the store with every booth filled. As long as I acknowledge the people are there and wait on them with a smile (instead of acting like they are messing up my night) I always get a good tip...no matter how long they have to wait for their food. I've been pleasantly surprised at the good tips I get there. Of course, I'm still making 10.00 per hour less than I was; but it's better than nothing. The only people that don't tip are teenagers....I've come to not even expect one when I wait on them; but I still treat them as well as anyone else.
