Ok quandary time
The tough works fine with occupy. In fact, taking anything more pricey, even with press credentials, is just nuts. But here is the question, the tough 610 has some very real limits. We have a Nikon rig, a pretty good rig, with nice lenses. I am thinking putting money away for a Nikon 1 V or an entry level DSLR. No, I don't want to take hubby's toy! I also have not done any serious photography in a long time. The Nikon 1 is still nice and compact, but of that class of camera is not the best. The Sony are...and while the Nikon 1 could use the lenses, it needs an adaptor and in classic Nikon fashion flash shoe is custom...but it is fast and can record both video and stills, which hubby's older Nikon rig can't.
So adaptor and new flash and all that puts us well within the price of a mid range camera with lens. But just getting the body we already have lenses and standard flash. We could save a little money...
But the Nikon 1 is compact, which can be important when shooting in the streets. It is also really fast in image acquisition, again important is a few situations.
Suffice it to say, will still carry the tough 610 as backup, primary for occupy or raining cats and dogs. No, water proofing cameras is not cheap, though the Nikon I the easiest, followed by the Sony mirror less systems.
By the way I have been reading reviews and the whole class of mirror less cameras is a whole revelation to me.
Suffice it to say, I do futz with the settings on the camera, but when shooting action, or convention photos it is mostly in full auto...there is an actual limit of how many tasks I can carry out at the same time, and only have two hands.

Seriously, a used SLR with a 50mm lens is a good all-around camera if you bother to learn how to use it.

I've seen some of her pics.
I can do a better job with my Canon SX130 PowerShot, and the only thing I'm proficient at doing with it is turning it on!
Got it for $200 on sale at Walmart Christmas 2010, including the 4GB SD memory chip.

I have a Kodak "Brownie" from 1962.
But I've never used it; it'd belonged to an older sister.
Me, I use those $5 disposable cameras one buys at convenience stores when I need to take a picture of something.
I'd match my talent up against nadin's any time. It's not the equipment, but the handling.

I take better pictures with my cellphone than Nads is capable of with an actual camera. Getting an expensive DSLR isn't going to help her at all.

Skip the ILC type and just buy an entry level DSLR.
You'll have a better "rig", and it'll actually save you money.

Oh goodness, Nadin. Just use a cell phone, you can upload all of your crunchy pictures to Facebook immediately. You wouldn't have to be bothered with the pesky task of uploading when you get home.

I can't believe anyone uses a film camera anymore. I have an old one, but it's such a hassle, it hasn't been outa the box in 12 years! Ya ever watch those pawn shop shows on TV? Ya can't give the things away!

I've never heard a photographer call their camera a "rig". The only thing described as a rig is my dad's semi truck.

OMG. I never realized the battery stampede was for the Olympus Tough 610. I got a Tough 6020, which is basically last year's version of the 610, with a spare battery. The 610 uses the same battery. I probably could have retired, if I sold at the height of the battery market.

Does she profess to be some kind of reporter? If that's the case, isn't it better to be a little more pleasing to look at so as to get thru certain doors? No wonder she still has an SLR! She couldn't afford anythin' else!

I really want to meet Nads and have my picture taken next to her with her good rig. I will tell her I am some kind of celebrity and she can do a crunchy interview with me to share on DU. It would make for a couple of hours of entertainment, I am sure.
