I usually can't stand pop music but I certainly recognize talent when I see it. That girl was The Voice, she owned the 80's. Untouchable, she really was in a class all her own.

I totally blame the drugs. Too bad, 48 is way too young for anyone to depart this earth.

R.I.P. Whitney, thank you for the awesome voice.

Have to agree with FB on this one--I would think it was drugs that did it.  Even ESPN interrupted their college basketball coverage to report it.

RIP, Whitney.

Mother goose,

There was a little girl who had a little curl
Right in the middle of her forehead;
When she was good, she was very, very good,
And when she was bad she was horrid.

No disrespect intended for the dearly departed. RIP.

She really was 1 of the best singers ever. I know she's responsible for doing drugs, but there are a lot of people with blood on their hands by enabling her, she should've been forced into long-term therapy.

Indeed she was.

Audio quality varies from video to video, for some reason the audio on the one I posted was better but the overall video you posted was the better of the two.

<object width="640" height="360"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/Z1QmeEdFOSc&hl=en_US&feature=player_embedded&version=3">

There have been some truly great performances of our National Anthem over the years but this particular rendition by Whitney Houston was considered by many to be among the very best. It came at a time when the nation was still healing from the Viet Nam era and the military was up until the Gulf War still looked upon with disdain by a large segment of the public which was wholly not deserved. Our troops did what they were sent to do and were winning in southeast Asia. They were left in the lurch by pandering politicians. At that time Kate Smith was probably regarded as being most associated with the National Anthem. Before her the previous generation had Marion Anderson but in her time she would never be given the credit she was due in the America of the 1930's. Anyone who heard her voice though in their parlor over the family radio before television existed would be moved and recognize that they were hearing a standout but likely not realize she was black.

http://youtu.be/mAONYTMf2pk

Whitney Houston in her prime during the 1980's enjoyed a massive wave of popularity which transcended all of America, no matter who you were everyone liked Whitney with no labels attached to her, just appreciation of raw talent for what it was, beautiful. Everyone appreciated such a great talent despite the fact she was female and black, that never entered the equation. She was just Whitney and she was awesome.
Not often, perhaps once in a generation or so there comes along a true standout and usually out of nowhere despite the mainstream trends to rise above and captivate everyone. That was Whitney Houston. She not only earned her Emmys, she ran away with them and created such a gap being that pop music is so regimentally contrived and controlled from inside the industry to create sameness and control the market. She blew the lid off of it.

There have been but few other examples in modern music history which have had such a profound effect. Elvis Presley. What was there before Elvis? Jimi Hendrix. It has been said, and rightly so that there are but two eras in rock guitar, everything before Jimi and everything after.

Whitney Houston did that with vocals, to all genres. She didn't set the mark, she stepped up to the mic and turned it on its head.

I gather Jennifer Hudson has been tapped to do a tribute to Whitney at tomorrow night's Grammys. It would be a nice touch if Dolly Parton could sing her "I will always love you" that Whitney covered so magnificiently.  Then someone should jump on stage and insist that Bobby Brown be charged as an accessory to murder.
RIP Whitney.

Whitney Houston was found dead in her hotel room today.

Whitney Houston, who reigned as pop music's queen until her majestic voice and regal image were ravaged by drug use, erratic behavior and a tumultuous marriage to singer Bobby Brown, has died, Fox News confirms. She was 48.

The Beverly Hills Police Department responded to an emergency call at the Beverly Hills Hotel Saturday, Lt. Mark Rosen, of the Bevery Hills Police Department said.

This is incredibly sad on many levels. When I first heard her, I was in my early 20's; she was barely out of her teens. Her voice was magnificent, and I thought she would easily be up to Ella Fitzgerald's talent by, well, now. Beauty, eloquence, and one hell of a voice. Even Kevin Costner had something going with her during the movie they starred in together, but she was definitely a deserved queen.

Of course, that all changed with the marriage and subsequent problems with Bobby Brown, along with the drug use. I'm not one that likes to bemoan lost opportunities of others, especially celebrities whom are a dime a dozen. But whatever mental problems that Whitney had (and she MUST have had some being married to that #$#^#@ a**wipe Bobby Brown) were easily surpassed by her talent.

But years of abuse, drugs, and Bobby did not allow her to develop as she should have. And as much as I'm saddened by her death, and from the gifts of song she gave the world, I will always remember that if she had the right motivation and support and, frankly, real love, she would have become the greatest female vocalist of all time.

R.I.P., Whitney.

From what I've heard, he was on a reunion tour with his band from the 90s last night, New Edition, and he had to leave the stage from crying his eyes out.

Whitney Houston Prescriptions Found Possible Drowning

No illegal drugs have been found in the hotel room where Whitney Houston died -- at least not yet -- but prescription drugs were present, and it's possible the singer drowned in the bathtub ... TMZ has learned.

Sources tell us ... when EMTs arrived Whitney's body was already removed from the bathtub so it will take an autopsy to determine if she OD'd, drowned or died from some other cause.

Informed sources tell us ... Beverly Hills cops -- who were still searching the room at the time this story was posted -- found various pill bottles. There was no evidence that Whitney was drinking alcohol in the room.

Everyday a thousand Americans die early because of drug abuse. Yet the girl in Detroit who died of a drug overdose at age eighteen today and the fifteen year old crackhead who died in Alabama yesterday go unnoticed because we care mostly about those who provide us entertainment. This is wrong. In America the death of any American should be equal to that of any other American.
And we, by collectively overlooking the sins of our entertainers, enhance their destructive behavior.

May God have mercy on the soul of the girl in Detroit and the boy in Alabama and Whitney Houston.

All deaths are not equal to every person.  My brother died of an overdose July 2008 from methadone. His wife's methadone that she was suppose to be taking for extreme pain. His overdose wasn't news because no one knew who he was except his family and friends. I remember the next day watching people go about their day as if nothing had happened. I wanted to scream..."Don't you know that MY BROTHER just died!?!".  His death meant more than any famous person or quite frankly yours could ever mean to me.  So you or Whitney Houston, as an American, do not affect me as much as my brothers death.  It all depends on how much someone cared for the person.

Telling the world of his death wouldn't have helped a single person. People would say, "This is news how?" and go about their lives as if nothing happened. It is human nature to care more about your own than someone you don't know.  Entertainers touch our lives, some more than others, some even for the worse.  That is why this is national news and not the death of a crackhead in Georgia or quite frankly my brother.

With that being said, the media always overdoses on these types of stories. Michael Jackson's was the worst.

I loved this woman's voice and I don't think I have heard a more beautiful rendition of the nation's anthem. But I share your sentiment, it seems like she had to really work hard at destroying her life when the easiest thing would have been to simply express her God given talent.

Only problem with that though is they'd become much more accessible, you'd have a wider population becoming dependent on illicit drugs, in turn they'd lose their jobs, and either hit people over the head to rob them or become more dependent on the Government to take care of them. Tony Bennett and Ron Paul are idiots to even think of supporting something like this.

(my own creation, TYVM.....)

They might have done it in Los Angeles, but the mayor there is a moonbat and a douchebag.

This is ridiculous.  I'd be pissed too.

Chris Christie want's to do it for the entire state of New Jersey.

Heard on the news his justification was that they did it for Frank Sinatra as well.  I dunno.  I think it diminishes the message, personally.

Christie has compared it to flying the flag at half-staff for our troops who have been killed from NJ.

I have changed my mind about Christie. He is not what I want in a "conservative" and a patriot.

Looks like John and Ken just got a week's vacation for their comments re: Whitney.

While harsh, still don't see what they said was incorrect.  Poor taste, maybe, but not factually wrong.

But all those comments go squarely against the persona and legacy that Hollyweird and the rest of the entertainment industry want everybody to swallow -- Whitney Houston, while being a stellar singer and actor, was "troubled" and "wrestled with her demons."

Shit like that.  :whatever:

He probably wants it IOW, or more thoroughly explained. As for me, pretty self explanatory, although I can on occasion be quite dense.

Whitney Houston's funeral has inspired several of Newark's gang leaders to call for a day of calm today to honor the Brick City-born pop queen.

"If anyone out there is gang banging lets show Whitney Houston respect by commiting no crimes on saturday ......No shootings No robbing No car jacking basically no crazy (stuff) let us show some respect she helped alot of people in Nj lets show lov," wrote Johnson,

From what I heard is they just want someone to assualt them so they can sue and then pay for their stuff.  That is why they just show up at any funeral for no reason.
