FDA warns acid reducers can cause severe diarrhea

Washington, DC, United States (NewsBahn) - The Food and Drug Administration warned Wednesday that people who use stomach acid drugs known as proton pump inhibitors may increase their risk of coming down with a type of diarrhea that does not improve.
Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) include such popular brands as Nexium, Prilosec and Prevacid.
The FDA said people taking the acid-blocking drugs might have a higher chance of experiencing diarrhea caused by a bacteria known as Clostridium difficile. Symptoms include watery stool, abdominal pain, and fever. More serious intestinal conditions could develop, the agency said.
The bacteria live naturally in the intestinal tract of many people, but can reproduce to levels that produce Clostridium Difficile–Associated Diarrhea (CDAD) after a patient takes a round of broad-spectrum antibiotics.
