stay out of politics period, be it contraception, immigration or other issues.

I believe that this time it was politics meddling in religion and dictating to believers how they should handle their doctrine.

You know, I've never been sure the exact definition of "religion."

I suppose many think of "religion" as a formal institution, such as the Presbyterian Church.

They also might think of "religion" as "believing in God."

I've always thought of "religion" as a hard-core set of beliefs with others who share the same values.

Using my definition, the Planned Parenthoodlums are a religion, and I'd like them out of my government.

One might insist, "but the Planned Parenthoodlums don't believe in God, so that ruins your definition."

I beg to differ; they believe in a god--the god of abortion.

I think that religion is merely an organized form of worship based around a system of beliefs. Christianity is the belief system, a basic style of worship is derived to honor those beliefs: music, sermon, sacraments, etc (the religion part) and all the denominations are the believers way of implementing the system of worship with their interpretation of the beliefs.

Couldn't have said it better myself franc! My Dad, who was a preacher late in life BTW, told me even atheism is, in it's own way, a religion. He thought not believing in God wasn't much different than believing in false prophets.

O'bummer believes in the God of marx, Lenin, and Stalin!

And if you are a nhilist you believe in nothing which is of course a belief in something.  I have known many agnostics but few athiests.

At last we have a useful purpose for philosophers, a discussion of nothing.  Next up Seinfeld. :rotf:

Beat me to it! It is indeed politics meddling in religion, aka the real reason why Thomas Jefferson coined the term "Separation of church and state" in that letter he wrote to the group of Baptists: He wanted to reassure them (A religious minority in America at the time) that the government would not meddle in their church's affairs. This contraception law is doing just that.

What they fail to realize is, the first amendment makes it so government can not meddle in religion, however they interpret it as, religion can't meddle in politics, which is wrong. Every group people has the right to try to shape the government in ways that fit their values. That even includes the malcontents at DU who want to bring socialism to America.

The wall of separation somehow can't keep government from outlawing certain speech on the private grounds of churches, doesn't outlaw taxing pastors and other church staff, barely allows relgious groups to hire those that hold their values, and seemingly no longer keeps colleges from forcing Christian groups to accept and promote the most extreme leftist values.  Yet it is magically supposed to keep all Christians from using their values when voting, and all Christian representatives in government from following the values their voters espouse.   Pretty weird wall...

As soon as the Cult of AlGore stays out of politics all other religions should too.

I'd be willing to bet the vast majority of rapists vote lib/dem. Starting with Clinnochio.
