I am going to take it on face value that Clint Eastwood had no idea what a bad idea doing a commercial about Detroit was.
Check this one out from our friends at the DUmp.

Stop paying your property taxes if you are in Detroit
Detroit squatters can keep homes
Occupants of thousands of Motor City homes that didn't sell at a tax auction can purchase their abodes for $500. That includes squatters, renters and owners who didn't pay taxes.
Unlike the man who claimed a pricey Dallas home for $16, squatters in Detroit houses that failed to sell at a tax auction may be able to keep their new digs -- for a mere 500 bucks.
The Detroit News reports:
In a stark sign that paying property taxes is optional for some in Detroit, Wayne County Treasury officials decided last week its workers will go door-to-door to some of the 6,500 city properties unsold at last fall's tax auctions and offer to make a deal with whoever is living inside. That could include renters, squatters or the owners who defaulted on their taxes.
If taxes had been paid on the 1,500 or so occupied units last year, that would have added $17.6 million more to Detroit's shrinking coffers, the News estimates.
The fact that some people will be able to keep their homes for $500 after not paying taxes for three years -- or just by virtue of squatting there -- hasn't gone over well with other taxpaying residents of Motor City.
Said one reader of MLive in Detroit: "Why am I paying ever-increasing taxes on a property worth less than half of what I paid for it if paying these taxes is optional?" Post continues below.

Why wouldn't the city just repossess the properties and sell them to payoff the overdue taxes?

1. You assume that they would have ready and able buyers at auction.
That's hardly a guarantee anywhere these days, particularly if a property isn't in the best condition or the best location. As noted in the article, they're talking about properties which didn't sell at the tax auctions, implying that they couldn't sell these for what they wanted to.
I am only brining the first and last but what's in between is a hoot. Lots of urban farming and other Utopian stuff.

31. Occupy should get all over this one...
Start buying up homes and giving them to those in need.
This will certainly help Detroit make a comeback.

Thanks frank, missed it in the copy, darn that DU3 :whatever:

Well, Occupy COULD have bought those houses, had their leaders not blown it all on $700/night rooms at the W in NYC.
Think about that, DUmmies--$700 = one night in a fairly nice, but small hotel room. $500 = a home for life.
You lose.
-
This doesn't look like a "home for life".
This looks more like the city is trying to recoup some of it's loss on three years worth of unpaid property taxes. The city could seize the property over failure to pay back taxes, but that would mean court and administrative costs incurred to get a property that might not cover the lost taxes and other costs to seize and sell the property. Basically, Detroit is saying, "Pay a portion of your property tax from the last three years and we won't take action for at least three more years."

BTW the second halve of the game is over for Detroit and it is a state takeover.

Yup it would seem to be game over for Detroit with the winning team burning not just the goal posts but also the entire stadium.
I loved the comments from all the utopians about buying up the land and farming except it seems zoning won't allow it. Also loved the comment about planting an oak forest for harvesting in twenty years. :mental:

KamaAina suggested some "progressive group" buy up all these properties, to which a commie replies

11. Progressives don't play the capitalist game all that well
I say we keep holding out until the wingnuts completely capitulate -- agree for the government to be the owner/landlord of last resort and to allocate housing 'to each according to his need'.

21. Would not work today
The primary source of income is property taxes. Without adequate amounts it self destructs, not unlike Detroit is doing.

30. Ah, but remember the first part of what I quoted
"From each according to his ability" -- That's where you can get adequate amounts of income.
:bird: Bring back HUAC! Filthy communists. We will never, ever capitulate! We have the guns, asshole.

Why would they repossess properties they already own, primitive? And they DID try to sell them.
Why can't liberals read?

They used to. Some got around it by sharing an apartment address with several other cops and firemen. They would stay during their work week. I've been told you now have to live in Wayne County, but not required to live within city limits. I can't verify that, though.
I read about the $500 deal. Seems, though, that property taxes are still figured at previous values and many aren't interested in paying that high rate. Some people don't understand that at some point the money runs out and if you want services you, and your neighbors, have to pay for them. They just scream for more free stuff.
I'm listening to the unrest in France, Spain, and Greece with interest. Seems like we're headed the same direction.
