Title: I'm losing my mind, sound problem
Post by: Ballygrl on February 07, 2012, 01:45:37 PM
:banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

My Aunt got a new computer, she gave me her old 1, it's not that old, maybe 3 years old? she had Vista on it but I think it's the original version of Vista and it sucks, my Husband and I did a fresh re-install of Windows XP, and the computer is running awesome except there's no sound. From what my Aunt said she hasn't gotten sound in a long time, so the sound issue has nothing to do with the re-install. I got the info from the motherboard and downloaded drivers onto my computer, extracted them, then when I try to update the drivers it says hardware not found. :argh:

Any idea what my other options are? This is going to be the kitchen computer and I like to watch youtube when I'm cooking, or watch videos linked from Twitter.

Thanks!

Check the volume. :old:

Is there anything listed in the Device Manager under Sound, Video, and Game Controllers?

one fix would be a cheap sound card (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16829180005) less than $10

Under Device Manager I have question marks and yield signs under Other Devices, Audio Codecs says it's working properly.

How does a soundcard work? and how would I know which 1 to get?

We were going to do a restore when we got the computer but since she had so many problems with Vista we did a fresh re-install using Windows XP and the computer runs a million times better except for the sound.

i assume you have a tower PC and not a laptop.
you just open up the case, plug it into the slot on the motherboard. insert disk to install drivers.

its simple once you've done it. its harder explaining it than actually doing it.

Some of those sound cards - the easiest way to get them working , especially under XP is to find out what exactly it is - and download the manufacturers driver package. If the card isn't on the mainboard it'll be easy enough to ID it and head to the manufacturers site with a make and model to get their installer package.

It'll come with a little mixer app and all the stuff you need.

Windows' driver locating software will often not work.

If it's an onboard sound card (on the mainboard) - get the make and model of the mainboard then go to the manufacturers website and download it from them.

I downloaded the driver from ASUS, unzipped it and nothing happens.

OMG! I did it! :lmao: I have no idea why, but I went looking somewhere in C Drive, turned out that even though I unzipped the file I didn't install it! I'm so freaking proud of myself :lmao: I'm totally incompetent when it comes to electronics so I'm shocked I did this!

Thanks so much for all your help.

I've done that a time or two.  It's rather embarrassing.
