Oh my.

Oh man, Skins's island is as boring as Hell today.

Going to my first storage unit auction this weekend.

My brother, who makes a tidy sum each year selling on Amazon and ebay, is dipping his feet into storage unit auctions. I'm going along for the ride and taking my 6-year old daughter who I'm hoping will yell 'yeeeeeup' for her uncle when he wants to bid.

1. Please update us after the auction!

We have a small antique biz, and the TV show has piqued my curiosity. It occurred to me that the new fame has reduced the opportunities.

2. I will

I think the there's probably a 'weeding out' process here. Not only do you have to have cash in hand, you're also responsible for clearing out the unit in a timely manner. There also seems to be a 'sixth sense' some have about what is valuable and what isn't. It also helps to have established connections on where and how to sell the stuff. All this probably keeps the novices (like me) to a minimum.

3. Sounds like you're pretty aware of the key issues. Good luck.

The vindictive primitive, the notorious re-seller, who tries to buy Wedgewood at Dollar General prices, and usually sells Dollar General goods at Wedgewood prices:

4. I really want to do that, but I don't have a place to put large amounts of stuff for sorting.

Maybe I'll reorganize the garage when the weather warms up. Those taped up boxes would be like Christmas!

The fecund grasswire primitive, who's managed to eke out five generations in 60 years:

5. I used to see huge box lots at Pioneer Auction in Amherst and at Douglas Auction in Deerfield

I think the Pioneer Auction has relocated and come to think of it I think Douglas is in South Deerfield.

Anyway, there would be box lots of dozens of sealed boxes that would go for a song. No peeking prior to the auction. Several times my partner and I bought those lots, and we were never disappointed. Some amazing stuff was therein. And it was really exciting, hauling all that stuff home and going through it.

Today I might worry about bed bugs, though.

You have to wonder how much she could haul.

The DUches are now going to feed upon the misfortune of others.  Not surprising to hear this.

DUmmy = hypocrite + hate.

DUmmies buying the stuff other DUmmies would like to keep at someone elses expense.  I'm sure the poor storage renter simply fell on hard times and these DUmmies are going to clean them out and they are hoping for bargain basement prices!

The auctioneer will spot the newbie DUmmie and have him bidding against himself. :lmao:

I've seen it done at heavy equipment auctions....I learned early at cow auctions.

Profiting at the expense of poor people, eh ? Sounds very '1%ish' to me, primitives.

While kind of interesting, those shows also trouble me.  Much of the prized content appears to be the personal effects of people who passed away and whose family had no idea there was a storage unit with all the prized mementos and other crap too large to keep in their last abode.  Most of the bidders are shockingly ignorant about what they get, and generally seem to have the IQ and personalities of turkey buzzards, lashing out at each other over a ripe roadkill.

I used to LOVE govdeals.com until the "professional" and wanna-be-professional auctioneers found out about it.

You used to be able to buy P71 Crown Vic Interceptors for under a grand.  Now (even before Cash for Clunkers) they're going for $4k and up.  Way too much for an abused patrol car, but the P71 engine control unit and suspension components were worth four hundred bucks if you wanted to hot rod your Grand Marquis or Town Car.

Not so fast Mr. Tanker, Auctions for a home stead that cannot pay the taxes  or family died off are not this different from the Storage wars.

Now we did have a problem up the street with these storage sheds.   Some guy stored his family's stuff including his deceased parents things in a locker.  He mailed in the monthly charge for a year.     Time came he was on his feet and decided he could get his things from the shed.   He mailed in his last months rent and informed the owners that this was his last month, he would empty out his shed a week early.

He arrived to find his shed empty, the managers denied ever getting his last month payment and told him the workers had thrown out all his belongings into the trash.   He sued for all the good it did him, the check he sent had been cashed and the company now blamed a mix up in paper work.   Little by little he began to find his property in pawn shops.

Then a few years ago a high teck storage unit caught fire and burned down. Millions of dollars of antiques gone, the storage company had no insurance and the people that stored their goods had not taken out insurance on the unites as they believed the company did have insurance.

We store at our own risk, perhaps a boat or a old car for the winter.

Sad to bid on the leftovers of another ones life,  head to the South and watch an auction where people are loosing land and home.  This is sad, the people that store goods in lockers and find they cannot continue to pay know they will loose their goods.

Those loosing their land and homes never expected it, -----Much worse then loosing a Storage Locker.

Oh! When I got my new cellphone a couple of years ago I decided to get a new cellphone #, I gave my Mom my old phone and #, well the person who had the # before me was a deadbeat pervert, I kept getting porn text messages and calls from credit collectors, I sent a text to the porn company and told them I was 12 years old and to stop sending these to me, that stopped, and I called back all the collection agencies and told them the person they're looking for no longer has this number, those calls finally stopped, then I started getting calls from a storage company, I called several times to let them know the guy no longer has this number, I finally spoke to the Manager because the calls continued, well anyway, I said since I'm talking to you and I watch Storage Wars, just curious, do people usually do well buying those units, he said no way, he said 9 times out of 10 it's just junk that doesn't have a high resale value, he said maybe 1 time you get something decent, and very rarely do you get a unit that has a large payoff. Then I started googling Storage Wars and people said the freaking show is scripted! :argh:

I've been wondering about that.  I HATE when they script shows like that.

A dishonest reality show? Isn't there some regulation against that?

But wait....the BFRO is real, right?

Be careful DUmmies, you might get more than you bargained for. (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2092708/Deathbed-confession-Grandmas-final-resting-place-self-storage-unit.html#ixzz1kgQsBzPm)

What a bunch of turds.

They do know that the TV shows are staged, right?  Storage Wars is mildly entertaining, but scripted & staged.  Just like all the other "reality" TV shows out there.

No! No! Not The Kardashians!

I wonder how many people who watch that show have seen the tape that made Kim a celeb.

I thought it was real until they all started getting in each others faces.  Nobody acts like that.  When they started wearing shirts dissing each other and funky hats with "Yuuuuup!" on them I figured it was a hollywood production.  That's when I stopped watching it.
