A Nuke Scare in San Diego Shakes an Already Nervous Public

If you’ve felt jumpy since Fukushima, you’re not alone. Even the tiniest burp from a nuclear power plant gets people fearing the worst, so it was scary news indeed when the San Onofre plant in San Diego County announced at 6:30 PM (PST) on Tuesday night that one of it’s reactors might have begun leaking radioactive steam. The alarm was sounded at the plant at 3:30 PM, engineers began an emergency power down at 4:30, and the reactor was completely shut down and offline by 5:30.

The three-hour time lag between possible leak and public announcement did not inspire a whole lot of confidence, nor did the fact that the plant is located right next to heavily populated San Clemente as well as Camp Pendleton Marine Corps Base (indeed, it leases its land from the Marines). But Scott Andresen, spokesman for Southern California Edison, which owns and operates the plant, insists all is under control — even if it’s still too early to say all is well.

“We started shutting down the plant out of an abundance of caution,” he told TIME. “We’re investigating, doing the whole root cause analysis, and trying to determine how much steam was released — if any — and how much radiation it could have contained.” Encouragingly, whatever steam did escape remained within the containment dome. Not so encouragingly, the plant is well beyond middle age as nuclear reactors go, and it does not have a spotless safety record.

I'm more than a little upset with this.

nadin isn't yet done playing out the occupy deal, or the American-soldiers-in-Syria deal, and she seems to have dropped them.

Yeah, but she can't pass up an opportunity for another milk thread.  :-)

Bonus points if she can tie it to a domestic event.

Thank god Nadin got on this story.  I saw it while I was at work and had to ask on Facebook if Nadin has gotten to it yet.  I want to read her version though.  :rotf:

To be bluntly honest, I've never been that desperate, even though for some reason long ago buried in the subconscious, I've always been attracted to femmes of Hebraic derivation much more than femmes of any other type.

 Milk producers begin radiation checks
http://www3.nhk.or.jp/daily/english/20120202_01.html

Thursday, February 02, 2012 01:22 +0900 (JST)

Major Japanese milk producers have announced that screening tests for radiation will soon begin at about 180 milk factories in response to growing concerns among consumers.

Municipalities have been conducting radiation checks before raw milk goes to factories, but only a few have been checking the milk after it's produced. snip

Under the tougher standards, milk will be allowed to contain only 50 becquerels per kilogram, one quarter the current permissible level.

Yeah, add "drama queen" to nadin's resume.

Uh, nads?  You want to know what happened, in terms even a drooling mouth-breather such as yourself understands?

It's called a primary to secondary leak.  Not even a large one, by the looks of it.  By now, the plant is shutdown, cooled down, and depressurized so the leak is not a problem.  The steam generator stops are closed so nothing is leaking into the turbine building or to the outside.

More likely than not, the first indication of the leak (pinhole size at best) was due to elevated activity in the secondary samples, not some poor surfer growing a third arm.  What they'll do is do a steam generator inspection after they've drained the primary down to mid-loop, find the leaking tube, plug it, make sure there aren't any others potentially leaking (either by UT or eddy current testing), refill the primary, clean up the steam generator, latch and snatch the rods, and keep on pluggin.

Your milk is safe, nads.  All good.  You got more radiation exposure from your tooth x-ray than you'll ever get from San Onofre, and while it's not the best run plant as far as nukes go, I'll work there over a dirt-burner every single time.

Although I will say that the boys there might not have much of a life right now, they're gonna LOVE those paychecks.  Nothing like a forced outage check to remind me why I work here.
