Why Burning the Flag Matters
several pictures of young and old saying the Pledge as well as the flag in memorial at a cemetery
Let the hate fest begin.

1. Why I think this is more important than a piece of cloth.

8. That has nothing to do with the fact that the US Constitution protects this, even though you may not
like it. What's the ONLY proper way to dispose of an American Flag?
Look it up and then please stop this divisive nonsense.

3. Couldn't disagree more. It's just fabric, so long as one is burning one's own flag, doesn't matter.
True patriotism and memorial do not require symbols.

4. If you honor what the Flag represents, you must accept that some will wish to destroy it.
And that doesn't make them your enemy.
Sadly, too many can't see this self-evident truth.

19. Sorry, how is the guy who burned the flag in Oakland *NOT* part of the 99%?
Maybe more people need to really understand the difference between America and a mere symbol of America.

37. If they think a bit of cloth is more important than the future of America, then no.
If they're so easily distracted by inconsequential things, they wouldn't be much of an asset anyway.
Remember, the GOP just loves the politics of division. They'll make a huge issue of any flag that gets burned - just so they can get gullible people NOT TO THINK about WHY someone's doing it.
I'm more upset when I see a US Flag which has been made in China. And you should be too.

6. This reminds me of the constant brainwashing I received as a kid
They pretty much forced us to say the pledge of allegiance at my school. America is pure awesomeness and can do no wrong...and don't forget to salute the flag and pledge allegiance.
Brainwashing indeed.

21. What you have are pictures of Nationalism.
“A patriot sets himself apart in his own country under his own flag, sneers at other nations and keeps an army of uniformed assassins on hand at heavy expense to grab slices of other people’s countries and keep them from grabbing slices of his. In the intervals between campaigns he washes the blood off his hands and works for ‘the universal brotherhood of man’ - with his mouth.â€
Mark Twain, The Lowest Animal
na·tion·al·ism n.
1. Devotion to the interests or culture of a particular nation.
2. The belief that nations will benefit from acting independently rather than collectively, emphasizing national rather than international goals.
3. Aspirations for national independence in a country under foreign domination. na “tion·al·ist n. na â€tion·al·is“tic adj. na â€tion·al·is“ti·cal·ly adv.

27. I must have missed the mass flag burnings lately
while I was waging war on Christmas.
Much ado about nothing if you ask me. I'm not that into nationalism so I don't care if someone wants to burn the flag.
Hey, here is a quick question: Would burning a copy of the constitution be as offensive to you?

31. I'm sorry...
Have the skies become so black with the smoke of flaming symbols of our country that flag burning is topical again?
Here are the facts of the matter:
1. Yes, it's protected free speech
2. It's excessively rare. How many American flags have you seen burned (by Americans) in the 20 years when politicians were first making a mountain out of this molehill?
3. It's rare and will always be rare because
a. potential flag-burners know that they run the risk of getting their asses kicked by some Bubba for doing it. We are neither suffering a shortage of flags nor Bubbas.
b. most protesters know that doing so would take away any sympathy toward their cause.
Has there been a flag-burning in the news I've missed?

32. Allowing one's self to be oppressed by one's symbols, whether your symbol is pro- or anti- burning,
Last edited Tue Jan 31, 2012, 05:21 PM USA/ET - Edit history (2)
is the opposite of what that flag stands for, the FREEDOM OF THE PEOPLE that the flag ONLY represents. The flag and what it represents are NOT identical, flag =/= people. We could have every kind of respect for a flag that it is possible to have and it would still also be possible to be an enslaved people; the experiences that respect for that flag would represent would be the people's experience, lives of living oppression.
That said, an authentically free people would also know that freedom does not DEPEND upon anything, including whether a flag is burnt or not. Burning it doesn't necessarily mean that you are free. Not burning it doesn't necessarily mean that you are not free. Freedom is a necessary, though not sufficient condition, for either act.

40. Wow, putting a symbol ahead of the values and ideas that it stands for.
Making a cult, a fetish out of the flag, that is what is done in the hypernationalist circles.
What makes this country great is that we can indeed express ourselves in almost any way imaginable, so long as it doesn't cause harm to others. This includes burning the flag. That you are putting symbol ahead of substance says a lot about you, none of it good.
Here is the reason assholes and why none of you scumbags understand it.
The flag is the symbol of what this great country is and what it stands for, freedom and liberty.
You sure have every right to desecrate it as you see fit but good and decent folks understand your action is meant to show your hatred of the country it represents.
**** you. :bird:

The problem with the DUmmies, is they have it so damn good here that they have to convince themselves how miserable they are, and how rotten this country is. They have no understanding of us being proud of our country, and how that does not mean any of us think that the US is perfect, but we know how good it is and that is why we are so desperate to protect what it was built on, and why we honor the flag or more accurately what that "stupid piece of cloth" represents.
It is guaranteed anything good and decent in this world will be pissed on my these petty little creatures that inhabit the DUmp.

DUmmie says, "What's the ONLY proper way to dispose of an American Flag?
Look it up and then please stop this divisive nonsense."
There is a helluva difference in the way DUmmies do it.
Our Boy Scout troop collects and burns old U.S. flags about 4 times a year. They do it properly every time. On flag day every year they hold a public ceremony where they depose of quite a few. They conduct the ceremony in a solemn manner with dignity, reverence and respect for the old flags. They carry the triangular folded flags close to their hearts with crossed arms. They present the flag to 2 senior Scouts, slowly salute and retreat. The 2 Scouts then unfold the flag on a table, cut the blue field and stars from the flag and place it in the fire, then the red and white stripes....then repeat that with the next flag until each Scout has carried one flag during the ceremony.
They do the same when the ceremony isn't public.

WTF? If the US Flag represents the standards and beliefs that Americans hold near and dear, and someone wants to destroy that symbol AND what the flag represents, then hell yes they are my enemy, and an enemy of this country.

The DUmmies will never understand the symbolism of the US flag.
Their envy, jealousy, and hatred blind them to the hard work, sacrifice, and accomplishments that made the flag possible.

Perhaps a liberal dose of petroleum based product on their shorts, might change their minds. :fuelfire: :fuelfire:

Let them burn all the flags they want. Every time they do so publicly they reveal themselves and push away masses of people who might otherwise fall for their propaganda. Any thinking person would realize this, but in their arrogance they refuse to believe that anything they do is not perfect and righteous, and by Gaia, they're going to show their asses no matter what it costs them.
Far be it from me to interrupt their self-destruction. Burn away, dumbasses.

Dear DUmmies:
Here is why you should care about flag burning. You are trying to get the majority of the country to believe the OWS represents them. So far, polls show Americans identify with the Tea Party. You already have your work cut out for you when the news show your members destroying property & stealing from those who have been generous enough to give you a place to stay when they absolutely don't have to. As you have no real substance and no clear message, you've got to find other ways to convince the rest of the country, "hey look, we're just like you!". Now you can certainly try to convince yourselves it's some agent provocateur stealing from churches, destroying property, tearing down fences, pissing & ****ing in pubic, shitting on police cars, burning flags, etc. Except, there's the whole matter of the massive piles of garbage, the stench (you've got people admitting they don't bathe for weeks), the vermin (well okay in DC it's mostly been shipped to Virginia...I guess Marines at Quantico can just use them for target practice).
To wit: City clean up crews...you know, union workers the people you're supposed to support 110%...put their freaking health at risk picking up your filth, Occupy Los Angeles Cleanup Hazardous to Workers' Health (http://politics.gather.com/viewArticle.action?articleId=281474980841639). "The Occupy Los Angeles cleanup was an absolutely disgusting experience for sanitation workers. Los Angeles actually welcomed the Occupy folks and tried to work with the protestors, but the protestors just could not act like civilized human beings. They filled the park with human waste and trash and made it a health hazard...Sanitation workers wearing hazmat suits and masks moved into City Hall park Wednesday to clean up tons of trash, debris and human waste after police evicted the 2-month-old Occupy LA tent camp..."
There's simply no way the opposition could sneak in and pile up that much garbage to make you mother earth protectors look like slobs. So flag burning isn't really a good PR move for you...and drum circles...they're SO 5 decades ago.
Oh, and there's also this little gem that happened just north of me a while back (go on youtube & search for occupy, this is one of many...this behavior goes back years and years)

Even if you believe that flag burning is okay, what is not okay by any measure is that they stole said flag beforehand. You DUmbases keep conveniently forgetting that part of the story.
Kinda like the 'Clinton was impeached for a BJ' nonsense. - He was impeached for lying under oath.

I tried to watch that video, could only get halfway thru it. My blood pressure couldn't take anymore than that.
It's "people" like that who brought Hitler, Stalin, Castro, and Mao to power. Too stupid to think, too stupid to know, almost too stupid to live.
Their greatest contribution to mankind would be in a circus side show, as a warning of the dangers of liberalism.

What if I came into a DUmmy's house and took a dump on pictures of their kids or grandparents? I mean isn't that covered under the constitution? It's just a piece of meaningless paper to me. Just because they h ol hold it dear shouldn't mean anything. Right?

83. think I'm gonna go home and burn a flag or two tonight....
I mean, COME ON. There are lots of things we need to work on in this country that really do matter, but flag burning isn't one of them. This is one of the most pathetic attempts to smear OWS that I've seen yet. Next up-- let's condemn them for JAY WALKING! Or TALKING OUT OF TURN! Or simply for consuming oxygen that might be better spent on a millionaire's children.
OK, deal.
DisgustipatedinCA over there has way too much time on his hands. He goes to great lengths to try and rake MineralMan over the coals, because MM used to post on FR years ago. He framed it like a damning court case or something. Tyrannical fascist. MM can go anywhere he wants on the internet, and it's nobody's business.
